We love to watch TV, and there are a lot of shows we record, either on our PVR or directly on my network drive so we can watch them using XBMC on our Apple TV.

This XBMC thing is fantastic; the app will scan my network disk, find the files and detect show name, season and episode, info it uses to sort them. A menu is shown with information about every show, a summary of each episode and even a checkmark in case we have already watched it!

But the best happens once you start to watch. In some cases, me and Gaby still rely on the captions to fully understand the dialogs (sometimes they just speak too fast). The beauty of this XBMC product is that you just press a button -while watching- and it will download the captions for the specific show or movie you're watching, in whichever language you choose.

Every time I begin to watch an episode of my favourite shows with Gaby by my side and I read 'subtitles by Addic7ed.com' I silently praise these heroes who make mi life better by posting the captions almost immediately after the show is available online. :-)

Nos encanta mirar TV, y tenemos muchos shows que grabamos ya sea en nuestro PVR o en mi network drive, y que luego miramos usando XBMC en nuestro Apple TV.

Este XBMC es una cosa fantástica; la aplicación scanea el disco, encuentra los archivos y detecta el nombre del show, la temporada y el nro de episodio, información que usa para ordenarlos. Tiene un menú con información de cada show, un sumario de cada episodio y hasta un tilde para marcar aquellos episodios que ya vimos!

Pero lo mejor pasa cuando uno se pone a mirar. En algunos casos, Gaby y yo aún dependemos de los subtítulos para entender los diálogos (a veces hablan demasiado rápido). Lo bueno de este XBMC es que uno presiona un botón –mientras mira- y puede bajar de internet los subtítulos para el show o película que está mirando, en el lenguaje de preferencia.

Cada vez que comienzo a mirar un episodio de mis shows favoritos junto con Gaby y leo 'subtitles by Addic7ed.com' agradezco en silencio a estos héroes que hacen mi vida más sencilla posteando esos subtítulos casi inmediatamente luego de que el show está disponible online… :-)

My TV understands me

It was a long day yesterday. I worked from home all day, but it was really all day, because I started after I came back from taking the kids to school at 7:45 AM and I didn’t put down the laptop until it was time for dinner (Argentine time for dinner, which is roughly 8:30 PM). After that, we watched a couple of TV shows with Gaby, Juan and Flor and then everybody –but me– went to bed. Santi had gone over his friend Justin, because they are going to Buffalo tomorrow, to visit a couple of colleges there, and Carolina was at her friend Kendra’s place, which is why I stayed up.

 

Once I came back with Caro, at around 12:50 AM, I turned off the lights and got ready to go to bed myself. I noticed, however, that the TV was still on. I turned it off, but as I was going up the stairs it turned itself back on! Grabbed the control, switched from our Apple TV to the cable and turned it off for the second time. Once again, the TV came back on as if it were possessed or something.

 

Curious, I pressed the ‘guide’ button to see what was one at such an ungodly hour. And I saw this…

 

Formula 1 qualifying, and from Suzuka (one of the fastest and most difficult tracks)!

Well played, TV. I’m impressed.

 

 

Ayer fue un día largo. Trabajé todo el día desde casa, pero fue realmente todo el día, porque arranqué ni bien dejé a los chicos en la escuela a las 7:45 AM y no largué la laptop hasta la hora de la cena (la hora argentina de la cena, que es a eso de las 8:30 PM). Luego de comer miramos un par de programas de TV con Gaby, Juan y Flor y luego todos –menos yo– se fueron a dormir. Santi se había ido a lo de su amigo Justin, porque mañana se van a Buffalo a visitar un par de universidades, y Carolina estaba en casa de su amiga Kendra, que es la razón por la que estaba levantado.

 

Una vez que volví de buscarla, a eso de las 12:50 AM, apagué las luces y me preparé para acostarme también. Noté, sin embargo, que la TV estaba prendida. La apagué, pero cuando ya iba por la escalera se prendió sola de nuevo! Tomé el control, pasé del Apple TV al cable y la volví a apagar. Pero nuevamente, la TV volvió a encenderse sola como si estuviera poseída.

 

De puro curioso, apreté el botón ‘guía’ para ver qué podían estar dando a semejante hora. Y esto es lo que ví:

I heard about this on the radio and I just couldn’t believe it. Then I learned that it was some kind of a temporary thing, as it’s part of a campaign. Still, kinda crazy…

 

There’s a lot of channels in our cable package that we never watch. Among them, we can include ‘The fireplace channel’, and ‘The sunset channel’, which show the same thing all day:

 

Escuché sobre esto en la radio y no lo podía creer. Después me enteré de que era una cosa temporaria, producto de una campaña publicitaria. Igual, me parece una idea bastante loca…

 

Hay un montón de canales en nuestro paquete de cable que nunca miramos. Entre ellos, podríamos mencionar ‘El canal del hogar a leña’ y ‘El canal del atardecer’, que muestran lo mismo todo el día:

One could say that they are in fact relaxing, and even a good background for when you just want to be there having a quiet moment… I don’t know what to think about ‘The Aquarium Channel’, though; it comes with all the noises a fish tank makes, so that will disrupt your rest, I think.

 

Uno podría decir que ayudan a relajarse, y hasta son una buena opción para cuando uno quiere estar ahí y descansar un ratito en calma… No sé qué pensar, sin embargo, acerca de ‘El canal del acuario’; viene con todos los ruidos y ruiditos que hace una pecera, así que mucho que digamos no ayuda para el relax.

 

 

This is already kind of strange, but one tends to get used to things like this. That until the following channel began broadcasting last Sunday…

 

Esto ya es de por sí extraño, pero uno se termina acostumbrando. Esto hasta que el siguiente canal hizo su irrupción en las pantallas el domingo pasado…

 

 

Yes, that’s right. Believe it or not, it’s a TV channel that shows rotisserie chicken going around 24/7 (again, with noises and everything)! As I said above, it turned out to be some kind of a campaign that ‘Swiss Chalet’ is running these days; though extremely creative, I have to say I think it’s as close to absurdity as you can get. The kids don’t seem to agree, though, judging by the four pools of saliva that I found in front of the TV last night. :-)

 

I’ve heard of ‘all news radios’ and ‘all sports newspapers’… but this is the first time I see an ‘all you can eat television’!

 

Sus ojos no los engañan. Créanlo o no, es un canal de TV que muestra pollos al spiedo dando vueltas las 24 horas del día (con los ruiditos de los juguitos cayendo sobre las brasas y todo)! Como dije antes, es parte de una campaña que esta haciendo la cadena ‘Swiss Chalet’ por estos días; me parece enormemente creativa, pero también muy cerquita de caer en el absurdo. Los chicos no parecen estar de acuerdo conmigo, sin embargo, a juzgar por los cuatro charquitos de baba que encontre frente a la tele anoche. :-)

 

He oído de ‘radios de noticias’ o ‘diarios deportivos’… pero es la primera vez que veo un ‘televisor con canilla libre’!

There IS something wrong with this picture

A picture taken during last year’s Oktoberfest Parade in Kitchener – Waterloo was featured on Ellen DeGeneres’ popular daytime talk show “Ellen”, as part of her “What’s wrong with this picture?” segment, and it immediately caught a lot of attention, at least locally. You can see the picture below, it’s a big inflatable lion that is used by the local chapter of the Lion’s Club every year, but you have to agree, it doesn’t quite look like a lion from behind… :-)

 

The picture got a lot of laughs from the audience and the video has gone viral already. All good till there. Then I heard somebody from the Lion’s Club talking on the radio and his comments made me cringe. He basically said that it was all very funny and they even thought it was a great way to promote our trademark parade. They even invited Ellen DeGeneres to come to the next parade, which I think it was very nice.

 

But then they made a comment about how they also had another inflatable animal that she might want to see or something like that, and that animal is… a beaver. Sure, it’s the Canadian national animal (remember my post last week?) and everything, but it’s also a slang word for female genitalia. Why do I feel I’m the only one smelling something rotten here, given that DeGeneres’ is an outspoken lesbian?

 

I really want to think that this is all about me reading in between the lines where I shouldn’t; still, I just can’t help but think that somebody at the local chapters of the Lion’s Club has some issues. And that’s what’s wrong with this picture, at least to me.

Una foto sacada durante la edición del año pasado del desfile de Oktoberfest en Kitchener - Waterloo apareció en el muy popular show matutino de Ellen DeGeneres llamado 'Ellen', como parte de su habitual segmento "Algo está mal con esta foto" e inmediatamente concitó mucha atención, especialmente en la región. Uds. pueden ver la foto más abajo, es un gran león inflable que usa la rama local del Lion's Club todos los días, pero bueno, coincidirán conmigo en que no parece un león cuando se lo muestra desde atrás! :-)

La foto ganó muchas risas en la audiencia televisiva, y el video ya se ha inscripto en la categoría 'viral'. Todo bien hasta ahí. Luego oí a alguien el Club de Leones en la radio y sus comentarios me dejaron un poco molesto. Básicamente, dijo que era todo realmente muy divertido y que era una muy buena manera de promover el desfile, que es una marca registrada de la ciudad. También invitó a Ellen DeGeneres a visitarnos para la próxima edición, lo que me pareció muy bien.

Pero luego hicieron un comentario acerca de que tenían otro animal inflable que tal vez quisiera ver o algo así, y ese animal es... un castor. Seguro, es el animal nacional de los canadienses (recuerdan mi post de la semana pasada?), pero la palabra 'beaver' (castor en inglés) es también una forma de lunfardo para referirse a los genitales femeninos. Oh casualidad que hacen este comentario a Ellen DeGeneres, que es muy conocida por haber hecho pública su condición de lesbiana.

Yo quiero pensar que soy yo el mal pensado que lee entre líneas donde no debiera; pero de todos modos no puedo dejar de pensar que hay alguien en la rama local del Club de Leones que o bien tiene muy mal sentido del humor o algunos problemas serios de intolerancia. Y eso es lo que está mal con esa foto, al menos para mí.

NBC’s prime time drama is back

…but not the way they were expecting! When NBC (which is currently dead last among the big four TV networks) announced its plans of moving Jay Leno to the high profile 10:00 PM spot, many expressed their doubts. It was a bold move by a struggling network, hoping that a talk show would be able to draw much needed ratings while competing against very popular and well-established shows like all three “CSI” franchises, “Law and Order: SVU”, “Grey’s Anatomy” and others. Still, they went ahead with it and it was also announced that fellow funnyman Conan O’Brien was going to inherit Leno’s job hosting the legendary “The Tonight Show” at 11:35 PM.

 

While O’Brien was obviously the right choice for this job and did quite well competing against David Letterman (host of “The Late Show” on CBS), Leno’s show was a struggle from the get go. After a few months of being unable to capture the audience’s interest, NBC has now suddenly decided to pull the plug on “The Jay Leno Show”. But what to do with him, they don’t want Leno to disappear from the air!

 

The ‘solution’ they found turned out to be an annoyance not only for Leno, but for the three shows that come after his!!! They proposed that Leno would go between 11:35 PM and 12:05 AM (yes, just 30 minutes), then Conan at 12:05 AM, Jimmy Fallon (Conan’s replacement on “Late Night”) at 1:05 AM… and nobody even mentioned Carson Daly’s show “Last Call” (which is now airing at 1:35 AM), so I guess they’re saying ‘thank you for the memories’ to this gentleman.

 

O’Brien has just announced that he will not accept moving his show to 12:05 AM, which will surely cause him to leave the network. Good for him, as he’s going to get a ton of money from CBS, since they’re the ones changing the work conditions. That will probably allowed the clueless NBC executives to put their golden boy back in his 11:35 PM spot (from where it now becomes apparent he should’ve never left) and Fallon and Daly might be able to keep their original timeslots as well.

 

Conan, in the meantime, is rumoured to be heading for FOX. I will follow him wherever he goes, he’s the funniest of the whole pack.

 

But well, as Leno wisely pointed out a couple of days ago: “NBC wanted drama back at 10:00 PM. They sure have it these days!”. Another zinger I liked from him was: “Do you know what NBC stands for? Never Believe your Contract!” :-)

El drama está de vuelta a las 10:00 PM en la cadena NBC… pero no de la manera que ellos quisieran! Cuando NBC (que está última entre las cuatro cadenas grandes de TV) anunció sus planes de mover a Jay Leno al horario de las 10:00 PM, no pocos expresaron sus dudas. Era una jugada muy arriesgada de una cadena que estaba en problemas, con la esperanza de que el show pudiera ‘robarle’ audiencia a shows muy populares y muy bien establecidos como las tres franquicias de “CSI”, “Law and Order: SVU”, “Grey’s Anatomy” y otros. De todos modos lo intentaron y al mismo tiempo anunciaron que Conan O’Brien heredaría el lugar de Leno al frente del “The Tonight Show” a las 11:35 PM.

 

Si bien O’Brien era obviamente la mejor elección para ese trabajo y ha competido bastante bien contra David Letterman (host del “The Late Show” por CBS), el show de Leno penó desde el principio. Luego de unos meses de no poder capturar el interés de la audiencia, NBC ha decidido de golpe que va a levantar el programa de Leno, “The Jay Leno Show”. Pero qué hacer con él, no quieren que Leno desaparezca de la pantalla!

 

La ‘solución’ que encontraron terminó siendo una molestia no sólo para Leno, sino que también para los tres shows que vienen despues!!! Propusieron que Leno esté entre las 11:35PM y las 12:05 AM (sí, sólo 30 minutos), luego Conan a las 12:05 AM, Jimmy Fallon (reemplazante de Conan en el “Late Night”) a la 1:05 AM… y nadie siquiera mencionó a Carson Daly y su show “Last Call” (que está a la 1:35 AM), así que calculo que a éste último le dirán “gracias por todo, cerrá la puerta al salir”.

 

O’Brien acaba de anunciar que no va a aceptar mover su show a las 12:05 AM, lo que seguramente cause que se vaya de NBC. Buena movida, porque la cadena le va a tener que dar un montón de dinero, ya que ellos son los responsables por la finalización del contrato. Esto seguramente les permita a los confundidos directivos de NBC poner a su protegido (Leno) de nuevo a las 11:35 PM (un horario del que ahora se pone claro nunca debió haber salido) y Fallon y Daly tal vez puedan conservar sus trabajos.

 

Sobre Conan, mientras tanto, hay rumores de que iría a FOX. Si es así, lo miraré en esa cadena, porque es el más gracioso de todos los que mencioné aquí (también me gusta mucho Craig Ferguson).

 

Pero bueno, como Leno muy bien indicó hace un par de noches: “NBC quería tener drama a las 10:00PM. Ya lo tienen, estamos todos furiosos!”. Después comentó: “Sabés que significa NBC? Never Believe your Contract!”  (Nunca creas en lo que dice tu contrato) :-)

PhotoHunt #25 - Thankful

We haven’t laughed so hard with a commercial in ages. I caught it first, while watching TV with the kids, and immediately called Gaby so she could watch it as well. Santi is the only one who hasn’t so far, so he’ll find out what are we laughing about when he hits ‘Play’ here.

The ad is very simple, but creative. And funny! Well, at least for us…

No nos hemos reído tanto con un comercial por años. Yo lo pesqué primero, mirando TV con los chicos, y llamé a Gaby inmediatamente para que ella lo pudiera ver también. Santi es el único que no lo vió todavía, así que se va a enterar de qué nos hemos estado riendo cuando apriete ‘Play’ aquí.

El aviso es muy simple, pero creativo. Y muy divertido! OK, al menos para nosotros…

Trident Xtra Care – Sus dientes le dirán ‘gracias’

No, don't worry, I won't ruin it for you the way they ruined it for me. :-)

I was programming my PVR last night, to make sure that all our favourite shows are taped, especially since both me and Gaby are going to be away so many evenings. Almost every show we watch ended the last season with a 'cliffhanger', but the most promising one was probably "ER", because an ambulance exploded and it's pretty obvious that one of three main characters will be killed off in the season opener next week (Abby? Pratt? Morris?).

There's rumours galore, but the truth is that nobody knows who's going to be unmercifully killed. ith that in mind, I went to program our shows and when I found the next episode of ER, I pressed 'info' just out of curiosity. There I found the brief summary of the episode, which told me -in just one sentence- who died and who didn't.

No, no se preocupen. No les voy a arruinar la sorpresa como me la arruinaron a mí.  :-)

Estaba programando mi PVR anoche, para asegurarme de que todos nuestros programas preferidos iban a ser grabados, especialmente teniendo en cuenta las veces que o Gaby o yo no vamos a estar en casa de noche. Casi todos los shows que miramos terminaron la temporada pasada con un 'cliffhanger' (una situación que se resolverá en la temporada nueva), pero el más promisorio parecía ser "ER", porque una ambulancia había explotado y era obvio que uno de tres de los caracteres principales iba a 'morir' en el inicio de temporada la semana que viene (Abby? Pratt? Morris?).

Hay montones de rumores, pero la realidad es que nadie sabe quien va a ser eliminado de la última temporada del programa. Con eso en mente, fui a programar los shows y cuando hallé el próximo episodio de ER, apreté el botón de 'info' de puro curioso nomás. Ahí encontré un breve resumen del capítulo, que me dijo -en sólo una oración- quién murió y quién se salvó.

Muy bien, Bell ExpressVU. Muy bueno lo suyo...
