Twenty

(En español más abajo)

CanadaI haven’t written anything in over two years, yet I still refuse to shut down this blog. It’s not that I stopped writing because I grew out of it, or I didn’t like it anymore, or any other reason like that. It’s just that… I couldn’t find the time for it. Its priority slowly began to decrease as other activities, tasks or regular responsibilities became more important.

But today is different. I have a good reason for going back into the blogsphere: it’s my 20th anniversary in Canada today. It feels like an enormity of time, yet at the same time, I sometimes feel like I arrived just a couple years ago. It's unbelievable.

I could once again about how we got here (it's been done), say that it's the best decision I have ever made, or just fall into another overused comparison between home and new home. I think that after 14 years of blogging (with several hiatuses, of course), I have already said all that I wanted to say about all that. So I will tell you where we are today, 20 years later.

Gabriel:

  • I an still working for the same company, just about to mark my 19th anniversary with them. I have gone through different positions and roles, worked in the office and from home (like now), travelled a lot or being 95% of the time at home (again like now); I have worked with people I really appreciated and with others that…anyway. I have reported to people who trusted me and empowered me, and others that made me feel miserable. But you know what, I am still here. And I still love my current position, more than others I had in the past.
  • I am not singing that much anymore, as I rarely have the time to go to practices or concerts/services (plus my voice was shot for months since late last year, something I will talk about later).
  • I continue to be involved in soccer, but my coaching career is definitely winding down at this point.
  • I am in good health generally, having lost about 60/70 lb. thanks to my gastric bypass surgery five years ago. I had originally lost about 90 lb. in the few months after the surgery, but my weight loss was too fast and too drastic. I was losing about a pound a day and I began to look sick. I plateaued at some point, and then I stayed at that weight for a couple of years, if not more. I went up 25 or 30 lb., and then down again, so overall I am about 80 lb. less than my worse times, and some 60 lb. compared to the day of my surgery, as I mentioned.
  • My health is better; this allows me to do a little more physical activity, and even run around pretending that I can play soccer during my practices, but I am not as young as I used to be so I normally end paying for my lack of self-awareness. My type-2 diabetes was gone the moment I had my surgery, so other than having to watch my blood pressure and the occasional back pain due to my job, I am more than fine.

Gabriela:

  • Gaby finally went full time with her own business, KW Empanadas, back in March/April 2016. I always knew she had to do this and had been pushing her, but of course, I needed to respect her times.
  • I believe she is doing fantastically. For the first couple of years, her store was mostly aimed at catering lunches and other events for the many IT companies that we have in the region, with the end customer orders filling in the gaps. Due to the COVID-19 situation, most IT companies switched to working from home, so she had to reinvent herself. She began offering her food via UberEats and another local company called Skip the Dishes, and we started to pay more attention to her B2C side (direct sales).
  • At some point during the COVID-19 break, a couple of very positive reviews on social media triggered a massive increase in orders to the point that we all had to go and help. It was 'all men on deck' for a few weeks until it got manageable again, but growth has been constant since then. In addition to those venues, she also sells to online markets and other stores in the region and offers her products at the Kitchener Farmers Market every Saturday morning.
  • I go to the kitchen two or three times a week after I am done with work, and help by taking orders, packaging the food, etc. I am also at the Farmers Market on Saturdays, from 6:30 AM to 2:00 PM. Saturdays are a killer because we also open from 5:00 PM to midnight!
  • Like me, Gaby had to give up on the choir singing, because we are just too busy.

Santiago:

  • After graduating Magna Cum Laude at Cleary University, Santi came back home and quickly started to work with his friend Ryan (whom I used to coach as well, and graduated from Cleary like my son). Ryan had started a recruiting company, and Santiago was helping until he started exploring the possibility of having our own soccer club!
  • We started from very small, with just a few players he was training, back in 2017. Then we put U15 boys and a men’s team during that summer, and that's when the real growth began. Soon, we had four teams, then six, then eight. Our squads won tournaments and leagues, travelled across Canada and the US playing exhibition games against very good university teams --and beating them. Through the partnership with Ryan's company Next Level U Sports, our club -Berlin Football Academy- has already gotten scholarships for more than 40 players, who were able to further their soccer careers at very prestigious schools both here and in the USA.
  • In 2019, Berlin FA was given official Ontario Recognized Academy from Ontario Soccer, which allowed us to compete officially, pretty much at the same level as any of the local clubs. We took things a lot further in 2020, as we were accepted as members of the UPSL, the 3rd tier Pro-Dev Soccer League in the US, so we will now have a semi-professional team called FC BERLIN, which will be based in Buffalo, NY.
  • But that's not all: Berlin FA has now incorporated and became Berlin Sports Group. We have added a field hockey academy (Berlin FHA), and a track and field academy (BRLN Athletics), and we are already thinking about our next steps, which include our very own indoor facility, expected to open in November.
  • It's amazing to think that a 25-year-old could have built all this. We have somewhere between 150 and 200 young student-athletes, plus 50 or so graduates, plus a roster of close to 20 people between coaches, assistant coaches, trainers, media and administrative people. Like I said, just amazing.
  • Santi lives in Kitchener and has a grey cat named Mila who is quite wild and immune to all attempts of teaching her anything. I love that little thing.

Carolina:

  • After graduating from high school, Caro started Psychology at a local University but it wasn't what she was expecting it to be. She began to work pretty much at the same time, and continues to do so now, currently employed as an administrative employee at a local car dealership. Dealing with customers and managing several branches is something that comes naturally to her, so she is now looking at returning to school and see if she can find something in that area that she can study.
  • In addition to her current job, she has now begun to work with Gaby, taking on some administrative duties; the same applies to Santi's company, although she is just starting (in both cases)
  • Carolina continues to live in Cambridge, ON with her boyfriend Matt, about 30 min away, but they will be moving closer very soon. They have two cats, Kovu and Primrose. They are twins, they are very young still and they are the cutest thing ever.

Juan:

  • Similar story: he graduated from high school and tried a couple of careers at school but could not find the one that really interested him. He has been working since, mostly in the food business. Like Caro, he was temporarily laid off during the pandemic break, but while his sister was almost immediately brought back, he ended losing his job for good.
  • Soon after that, Juan started to work in the kitchen with Gaby. My wife taught him how to make the empanadas dough, something that takes a lot of time and was a very high cost for us, because we would have to go all the way to Toronto to buy them, from places that were not very reliable with their times, and even less with the quality of the product they sold. With Juan in charge of this side of the business, Gaby is much more relieved and can definitely focus on the rest. I would say that both of them are very happy with the way things are going.
  • The good news is that Juan did find his passion: he started to come to Berlin's practices and games and shoot video or just take pictures. We soon saw that his work was absolutely astonishing. The action pictures he takes are superb, and his post processing and video editing skills have been improving day by day. As of two months ago or so, he started his own business, Cloud North Visuals, and has partnered up with Santiago and also with Ryan's recruiting company, producing highlight videos, documentaries for our club, and many other things. He even gets hired to do work outside of the family businesses, whether it is a concert, a video clip or some other sports, personal or corporate events.
  • Juan still lives with us and has been dating Meaghan for quite some time now.

Florencia:

  • Flor is currently in Grade 12 and graduating next Spring. At almost 17, she has her whole life ahead of her and that can be a little scary. Since she is playing soccer for Berlin, and doing quite well, she has already been approached by many schools in the US, so she is currently weighing her options.
  • She is still very much into arts, especially music and dance, and she is completely obsessed with K-POP these days, which of course opens the door to a lot of jokes coming from the siblings... OK, and me.
  • She still doesn't know what exactly she is going to study, so she is a little stressed about it. She still has time though. In the meantime, she continues to work at a Tim Hortons and spends her time studying, playing soccer or going out with her boyfriend Keagan.
  • Like I did a few years ago in Waterloo, I got to coach Florencia for Berlin and she is also the team's captain. A lot of pressure for one kid, being the coach's daughter, the owner's sister AND the captain, but she thinks nothing of it. She is clearly the best person for the job, as she is committed, supportive, leads by example and is always bringing everybody up with her positive attitude. This kid is going to go places, I can feel that.
  • Flor still lives with us, but I would expect her to move to the US in the fall of 2021. Time will tell.

So there it is. This is where we are, 20 years to the day since I arrived in Canada, and two or three years since I stopped blogging the last time. Will you have to wait another two years to see what's next? Hopefully not!
