Back in the choir loft

(En español más abajo)

CanadaI have another row to check in my ‘50 things…’ bucket list. After a hiatus that lasted about three years, I went back to singing last weekend. I made up my mind last week, and I pretty much showed up unannounced to choir rehearsal on Thursday, surprising as many people then as I did during service on Sunday. Smile

I sat in my old spot, in the bass section, and my first thought was about two of the people I used to sit with, both of whom are no longer around: my very esteemed friend Harold has passed away, and David is still recovering from a very unfortunate domestic accident that he suffered just days before her beloved wife Myrta passed away. John was there as usual (this very kind gentleman has been in the choir for decades!) so at least there was a familiar face around. Still, it was very hard to concentrate in my singing at first.

Not having sung for such a long time (well, at least not in a choir) definitely took a toll, as I struggled to find the bass line several times on Thursday. Many times I got lost, and there were many others where I either sang the wrong words, or was almost positive I had sung the wrong note (which to me, having the musical ear I have, is unforgivable). Luckily, there are some very strong choral scholars in the male section (bass and tenor), so I was able to correct my mistakes and the rest of the practice flowed without major problems.

Sunday was slightly different. I read my music much better and found myself looking up and watching our choir director more often. I felt very well after the service and went downstairs for the mandatory cup of (decaf) coffee and the social time. Everybody was of course surprised to see me, and they were asking me if I was coming back for good or if this had just been a one-time thing.

I made a very clear statement: “I don’t know”. I’m singing at least until Easter. Then we will see… For now, I’m just happy I was finally able to come back! Smile

Smile
