Gas

(En español más abajo)

CanadaWow… it’s been a while. More than two years, if I’m not mistaken. After teasing us for a few days, we finally see the price of gas to drop below $1.00 last weekend. There were long lines at those stations, full of people who just wanted to have a receipt indicating that they had paid $0.999 for the litre of gas (because if they were there just to save two or three cent per litre, and they had to wait for more than an hour, then I really hope it was worth the $2.00 they saved!) :-)

Remember when it was at $1.30? It wasn’t that long ago!

Recuerdan cuando el precio andaba por $1.30? No fue hace tanto!

A very busy weekend

(En español más abajo)

CanadaThere is a lot of things going on in the area at this time of the year, and we love pretty much all of them. We get invited to Christmas concerts, pageants, parades, meetings, dinners, etc etc. This past weekend was a particularly busy one, because we had a lot of events we were planning on attending.

On Saturday, we had our traditional Turkey Dinner at church, and it was just excellent… so good that we decided we will have the same menu for Christmas Eve this year. These dinners are organized by the Men’s group, to which I belong, but I couldn’t be part of it this time. I wasn’t even expecting to be in town this weekend, to be honest, but I had a change of plans. The Almada family was well represented anyway, because Juan was asked to give a hand serving tables and then he spent about an hour washing dishes after everybody left.

From there we went to the Kitchener City Hall, where we spent about two hours at the 17th Annual Christkindl Market (our Festival of German Christmas), an outing we all love. It was very cold but that didn’t prevent us and our good friends Francisco and Johanna –with their son Alejandro– to walk around, enjoy good music… and eat a massive, succulent pork schnitzel sandwich.

IMG_20131207_202927_236[1] I know… bad quality. Great sandwich though
Ya sé… mala calidad. Pero el sandwich estaba bárbaro

Florencia went over Alejandro’s place for a sleep over, so it was Juan, Caro, Gaby and I at home. We watched a couple of movies and went to bed really late. To give you an idea, we all woke up at around noon on Sunday, so we skipped church (we were there on Saturday, doesn’t it count anyway?). Florencia had to skip soccer for the same reason.

Gaby and I left again at around 1:45 PM because we had our first ever ballroom dancing event. We have been taking lessons, and have a lot of fun. It’s a nice way to have some ‘we’ time every Tuesday night. We go from 9 to 10 PM, and then we have a coffee at a Tim Hortons nearby. On Sunday, we turned out to be the only ones from the Beginners class who ended showing up for the most part of the evening, but that didn’t prevent us from hitting the dance floor. As I mentioned on Facebook, we did great at jive, very good with waltz and four step, average at a couple more rhythms… and there is a lot of room for improvement for the rest. But we had a great time overall, and met very interesting people.

From there, we picked up the kids and went out again, this time to the Bethany’s Christmas Pageant in Kitchener. It was beyond packed, I had never seen so many people before. And like most of the times I have been there, it was incredibly cold. After a very nice presentation that lasted some 30 minutes, it was time to go back home. We got there at around 9:00 PM on Sunday, and there was no time for anything but a snack and then bed.

We wished we could have made a couple of other events, especially Christmas in Concert at Koinonia, but the dates and times were conflicting with all the other stuff we wanted to do. Well, we still have next weekend!

Argentina

Leaving Waterloo

(En español más abajo)

CanadaAfter 12 years of living in the city me and my family love and adopted as a home away from home, we finally moved out, something I had always considered 'impossible'. It was a big move for us; we definitely needed more room, and the new house provides it.

We did not going too far away, though, because we moved to Waterloo’s twin city, Kitchener. It’s a completely new neighbourhood, on the other end of town, but other than that very little has changed. We continue to go to the same places we used to and the kids still frequent the same people they used to. It’s just a longer drive now. Oh, and the most important thing, of course: should I change the name of my blog now? :-)

I won’t go on details about the whole operation but I will tell you that selling our house took a little longer than we were expecting, even after we had a person coming to help us ‘prepare’ the house. It was a very interesting experience, with this lady saying things like: “Remove all personal effects and family pictures from frames and walls, so the prospect buyer can imagine him/herself living here; you need a new lamp here, and you need to paint that wall there”. We hired one of those storage lockers (like on the TV shows) and put 1/3 of our house in there. It took several trips with our cars to fill that container, and one with a truck to bring all the stuff back to the new place last weekend!

First night in the new home - Primera noche en la nueva casa

We hired a moving company, and that was the best decision we have made about this whole thing. The people from Tippett-Richardson gave us a very accurate estimate, showed up on time (actually, 15 minutes early) and did a great job. Four people came and moved all of our stuff from one place to another in under 10 hours, leaving everything back where it should go, assembled and everything (except for the beds).

Leaving the old place was not easy. We had lived there for almost 10 years, since five days after Flor was born (she didn’t know any other home) and we had a lot of memories there. Some we’re taking with us, some stayed. I will never forget that little townhouse on Woolwich St.

But now everybody has their own room, and even though we’re living in chaos right now and we still have a thousand boxes still to be opened, we’re very happy!

Argentina

IMG_20130625_230306_855
Florencia in her new bedroom – Florencia en su habitación nueva

IMG_20130624_213347_941
Last dinner at the old place – I cooked noodles with butter :-)

This is Waterloo

(En español más abajo)

CanadaI’ve been in town for a while, almost a month (except for the three or four days I spent in Detroit since last Thursday), and I have been going to the office periodically. Technically, I work from home, but we have new people joining our team so I have been taking some time to go meet with them and show them some of the things I normally do when I’m not on the road.

I haven’t been putting full days at the office, though, because I normally have to go pick up somebody from school, etc. But yesterday was the exception, as I was in the office between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM. I have to say, driving around town at 5:00 PM on a weeknight… I haven’t done that in a long time! The busy traffic caught me completely by surprise.

I took one of my family’s trademarked ‘short cuts’ (we all do it) that normally cause me to drive longer distances and for a longer time, and as I was waiting for the traffic light on the very busy corner of Weber St N and Columbia St, I saw something that suddenly reminded me of where I live. A horse-drawn buggy right next to me.

But wait, it gets better… it had blinking lights, because it was going to turn right! Unfortunately, I didn’t see that until the green light came, so I couldn’t snap a picture.

Today is the day

CanadaIt finally arrived. After an eternity that lasted 14 days, we're ready to go for the biggest game in our lives. Santi's team is playing the final game of the Ontario Cup today at 3PM, and a win will have our team going to the Nationals in Nova Scotia in October. We're all equally excited and terrified.

I'm not your average parent-turned-into-coach-who-gets-very-defensive-when-somebody-criticizes-my-baby kind of guy. I'm very aware of Santi's skills and also his areas for growth. I know very well that Santi is not the 'star' of the team. Even more, I'd say that Santi would probably be in the Top 5 of most classifications we could come up with (by skills, by speed, by stamina, by ability to 'read' a game...) but he would probably not be the top player in any of those. There is one thing that Santi has that most players do not, and that will be the key for his success: his drive. My son loves this game, he breathes soccer. He plays with intensity, but also with intelligence. He's the one who is going to be there when nobody else seems to be showing up.

He has a strange quality: he shows the best of him when the pressure is really high. He is (almost) always the highest performer when the games are really important, and he always leaves his mark. He is the one who scored two goals and assisted the other two when we won the league last year. He's also the one who scored the lone goal at the BMO field when we won our Provincial League in May. He also scored the winning goal in the most exciting game we've ever played when we beat Ottawa in group stage for this same cup, and he's the one who scored a fantastic goal and got chosen MVP two weeks ago when we beat this country's #2 team in semifinals.

I'm very confident in our chances today. I like the fact that nobody gives a dime for us, because that's exactly what happened at every game on our way to this final. I know our guys are going to work really hard today, and I know that win or lose, I will be proud of them.

I also fully expect Santi to be the 'hero' again today. I hope he gets to play that vital role again and has the greatest moment of his life. I will be just happy to get to see that from the bench.

If you want to follow the game, check our team's Twitter account @unitedfc95

Santi at age 10, scoring with 30" to go. Questionable choice of music by my son...

K-W 2012 Byelection is today - Most important ever!

Canada
Today is an historical day for this region. Elizabeth Witmer, who was MPP (member of the Provincial Parlament) representing this district for over 20 years (between 1990 and 2012), resigned earlier this year to assume his new position in charge of the Workplace Safety & Insurance Board. This has prompted the Province to call for a byelection to find a replacement (something also happening in Vaughan, north of  Toronto).

Like never before, the outcome of today's election is very important. The Provincial Legislative Assembly has 107 members, currently distributed like this:

  • Liberal Party: 52
  • Conservative Party: 36
  • New Democratic Party: 17
  • Vacant: 2

If Liberals won both in Kitchener-Waterloo and Vaughan, Dalton Mc Guinty would be regaining a majority, something he lost by one seat in the last election. Since Vaughan is a traditionally Liberal district, it's expected they will get seat #53 over there. The attention has now turned into our region, because it's known that K-W has a tradition of having Conservative MPPs. The interesting thing is that, according to recent polls, it's neither the Liberals nor the Conservative who look like they are going to win this thing, but the New Democratic Party, locally led by Catherine Fife.

It'd be interesting to see what happens if the 'orange' guys win here, showing that the legacy of their recently deceased leader Jack Layton is still alive. The NDP is on its way to become the second minority of this country. But for that to happen, they will have to put on their long pants, and stop doing stupid things like appointing local celebrities or 19 year old kids, both with no experience whatsoever, as candidates. They need to give those spots to qualified, apt people who have been working within the Party for years. We will see what happens.

A curiosity. Gaby went to work today, wearing her orange shirt, as always. Santi went to school wearing an orange shirt, and I'm wearing an orange polo myself. Was this a coincidence or a veiled support for the NDP? :-)

Somebody was at the door as I was finishing my last paragraph. It was a man giving me pamphlets for today's election. He smiled when he saw me wearing orange! I still don't know who to vote for yet, though...

Tornado

(En español más abajo)

CanadaIt’s Sunday and I had to work all day. In fact, it’s almost 9:00 PM and I’m still at the office (but about to leave). I had a soccer practice from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM tonight, and I was mad I was going to miss it; we have cancelled many practices in the past couple of weeks due to rain, but tonight we were practicing on artificial turf, so there was no way it was going to be cancelled!

But it was. There’s a HUGE thunderstorm hitting is right now, with lots of rain, and even a tornado alert. Santi got soaked, of course, and I bet we won’t have any soccer games for Caro and Juan to ref tomorrow.

I’m still at the office, waiting for the rain to stop, so I can go home driving, instead of swimming. This was one of the worst thunderstorms I’ve seen here, I wonder if any of my kids are scared! I remember Carolina used to be afraid of thunder when she was little (actually, she was afraid of loud noises, which included fireworks, so she would spend Christmas Eve and New Year’s under the table, covering her ears).

Time to get out. Wish me luck!

Argentina
