Long time no see… As you probably heard, me and Santi (OK, mostly Santi) own a soccer club named <a href="http://www.berlinfa.com" target="_blank"><strong>FC Berlin</strong></a>, which has teams competing both at the local, district and provincial level here in Canada, but also at a semi-professional level in the US. In this last case, every home game involves a lot of tasks and activities that are not common at the amateur level, and which include ticket sales, full stats, announcements, live broadcasting and play-by-play commentary.</div> <div align="justify" text="text"> </div> <div align="justify" text="text">With me playing the jack of all trades role most of the times, I have performed each and every one of the tasks mentioned above, though I have to say that I enjoyed the stats and the play-by-play part the most. But on this particular May afternoon, I had to add one new skill to my vast array <img class="wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-smile" style="style" alt="Smile" src="https://drive.google.com/uc?id=1Jgnl42Dn2v17aYDidDmeavPmdHD1kfq7" /> <br /> <br />As we were getting ready for one of our women’s league games in Buffalo, NY [our women’s squad plays in the <a href="https://uwssoccer.com/" target="_blank"><strong>United Women’s Soccer</strong></a> league (UWS)] we realized that the sound system was not working properly that particular day. This would prevent us from not only doing the announcements but also from another key event before the kick off time: the playing of the USA and Canadian National Anthems. <br /> <br />What to do? Well, there was not a lot of time to think of options so I quickly grabbed my iPad, googled ‘Star Spangled Banner’, went out to the balcony, and mentally looked for a starting note that would allow me to sing the ‘the land of the free’ line at the end without embarrassing myself. I waited patiently for the teams to walk on the field, and after the corresponding announcements, it was my turn to say <em><font color="#4bacc6">‘Please rise if able and remove your hats for the playing of the national anthems’</font></em>.</div> <div align="justify" text="text"> </div> <div align="justify" text="text">I stood up there, and tablet  in hand, I belted out the US National Anthem. I gotta say, I did it like a champion. It took everybody by surprise, and soon players, referees and spectators started to turn around and look up to find out where the music was coming from. I was so proud… it was my very first time singing it, and I thought I had done a great job! <br /> <br />Once I finished, it was time for me to sing ‘O Canada’, which of course I had performed countless times before. <br /> <br />And THAT is the one I screwed up. And it’s on YouTube. Holy crap, man…</div> <div> </div> <div align="center" text="text"><img style="border-width: 0px;" border="0" alt="" src="http://lh5.google.com/LFWaterloo/R4_iodmoZ2I/AAAAAAAABBc/OAIBoCrpoTg/separator%5B10%5D" width="191" height="11" /></div> <div> </div> <div align="justify" text="text"><img style="border-width: 0px; margin: 0px 6px 0px 0px;" border="0" alt="Argentina" src="http://lh5.google.com/LFWaterloo/R6QCM49hyFI/AAAAAAAABHw/F4MPCCgk1PU/Argentina_thumb%5B3%5D" width="30" align="left" height="30" /></div> <div align="justify" text="text">Hola! Tanto tiempo… <div align="justify" text="text"><br /></div>
<div align="justify" text="text"><img align="left" alt="Canada" border="0" height="30" src="http://lh4.google.com/LFWaterloo/R6QCNo9hyHI/AAAAAAAABIA/UVlWr4UKdIs/Canada_thumb%5B2%5D.jpg" style="border-width: 0px; margin: 0px 6px 0px 0px;" width="30" />I haven’t written anything in over two years, yet I still refuse to shut down this blog. It’s not that I stopped writing because I grew out of it, or I didn’t like it anymore, or any other reason like that. It’s just that… I couldn’t find the time for it. Its priority slowly began to decrease as other activities, tasks or regular responsibilities became more important.</div><div align="justify" text="text"><br /></div><div align="justify" text="text">But today is different. I have a good reason for going back into the blogsphere: it’s my 20th anniversary in Canada today. It feels like an enormity of time, yet at the same time, I sometimes feel like I arrived just a couple years ago. It's unbelievable.</div>
<p align="justify">I <strong>could</strong> once again about how we got here (it's been done), say that it's the best decision I have ever made, or just fall into another overused comparison between home and new home. I think that after 14 years of blogging (with several hiatuses, of course), I have already said all that I wanted to say about all that. So I will tell you where we are today, 20 years later.</p>
<p><font color="#ff8040"><strong><u>Gabriel:</u></strong></font></p><ul><li><div align="justify">
I an still working for the same company, just about to mark my 19th anniversary with them. I have gone through different positions and roles, worked in the office and from home (like now), travelled a lot or being 95% of the time at home (again like now); I have worked with people I really appreciated and with others that…anyway. I have reported to people who trusted me and empowered me, and others that made me feel miserable. But you know what, I am still here. And I still love my current position, more than others I had in the past.</div></li><li><div align="justify">I am not singing that much anymore, as I rarely have the time to go to practices or concerts/services (plus my voice was shot for months since late last year, something I will talk about later). </div></li><li><div align="justify">I continue to be involved in soccer, but my coaching career is definitely winding down at this point. </div></li><li><div align="justify">I am in good health generally, having lost about 60/70 lb. thanks to my gastric bypass surgery five years ago. I had originally lost about 90 lb. in the few months after the surgery, but my weight loss was too fast and too drastic. I was losing about a pound a day and I began to look sick. I plateaued at some point, and then I stayed at that weight for a couple of years, if not more. I went up 25 or 30 lb., and then down again, so overall I am about 80 lb. less than my worse times, and some 60 lb. compared to the day of my surgery, as I mentioned. </div></li><li><div align="justify">My health is better; this allows me to do a little more physical activity, and even run around pretending that I can play soccer during my practices, but I am not as young as I used to be so I normally end paying for my lack of self-awareness. My type-2 diabetes was gone the moment I had my surgery, so other than having to watch my blood pressure and the occasional back pain due to my job, I am more than fine.</div></li></ul>
<p><strong><font color="#8000ff"><u>Gabriela:</u></font></strong></p><ul><li><div align="justify">
Gaby finally went full time with her own business, <a href="http://www.kwempanadas.com" target="_blank"><strong>KW Empanadas</strong></a>, back in March/April 2016. I always knew she had to do this and had been pushing her, but of course, I needed to respect her times.</div></li><li><div align="justify">I believe she is doing fantastically. For the first couple of years, her store was mostly aimed at catering lunches and other events for the many IT companies that we have in the region, with the end customer orders filling in the gaps. Due to the COVID-19 situation, most IT companies switched to working from home, so she had to reinvent herself. She began offering her food via UberEats and another local company called Skip the Dishes, and we started to pay more attention to her B2C side (direct sales). </div></li><li><div align="justify">At some point during the COVID-19 break, a couple of very positive reviews on social media triggered a massive increase in orders to the point that we all had to go and help. It was 'all men on deck' for a few weeks until it got manageable again, but growth has been constant since then. In addition to those venues, she also sells to online markets and other stores in the region and offers her products at the Kitchener Farmers Market every Saturday morning. </div></li><li><div align="justify">I go to the kitchen two or three times a week after I am done with work, and help by taking orders, packaging the food, etc. I am also at the Farmers Market on Saturdays, from 6:30 AM to 2:00 PM. Saturdays are a killer because we also open from 5:00 PM to midnight!</div></li><li><div align="justify">Like me, Gaby had to give up on the choir singing, because we are just too busy.</div></li></ul>
<p><strong><font color="#008000"><u>Santiago:</u></font></strong></p><ul><li><div align="justify">After graduating Magna Cum Laude at Cleary University, Santi came back home and quickly started to work with his friend Ryan (whom I used to coach as well, and graduated from Cleary like my son). Ryan had started a recruiting company, and Santiago was helping until he started exploring the possibility of having our own soccer club! </div></li><li><div align="justify">We started from very small, with just a few players he was training, back in 2017. Then we put U15 boys and a men’s team during that summer, and that's when the real growth began. Soon, we had four teams, then six, then eight. Our squads won tournaments and leagues, travelled across Canada and the US playing exhibition games against very good university teams --and beating them. Through the partnership with Ryan's company <a href="http://www.nlusports.com" target="_blank">Next Level U Sports</a>, our club -<a href="http://www.berlinfa.com" target="_blank"><strong>Berlin Football Academy</strong></a>- has already gotten scholarships for more than 40 players, who were able to further their soccer careers at very prestigious schools both here and in the USA.</div></li><li><div align="justify">In 2019, Berlin FA was given official Ontario Recognized Academy from Ontario Soccer, which allowed us to compete officially, pretty much at the same level as any of the local clubs. We took things a lot further in 2020, as we were accepted as members of the <strong><a href="http://www.upsl.com" target="_blank">UPSL</a></strong>, the 3rd tier Pro-Dev Soccer League in the US, so we will now have a semi-professional team called <a href="http://www.berlinfc.com" target="_blank"><strong>FC BERLIN</strong></a>, which will be based in Buffalo, NY.</div></li><li><div align="justify">But that's not all: Berlin FA has now incorporated and became <strong>Berlin Sports Group</strong>. We have added a field hockey academy (<a href="http://www.berlinfha.com" target="_blank"><strong>Berlin FHA</strong></a>), and a track and field academy (<a href="http://www.brlnathletics.com" target="_blank"><strong>BRLN Athletics</strong></a>), and we are already thinking about our next steps, which include our very own indoor facility, expected to open in November.</div></li><li><div align="justify">It's amazing to think that a 25-year-old could have built all this. We have somewhere between 150 and 200 young student-athletes, plus 50 or so graduates, plus a roster of close to 20 people between coaches, assistant coaches, trainers, media and administrative people. Like I said, just amazing.</div></li><li><div align="justify">Santi lives in Kitchener and has a grey cat named Mila who is quite wild and immune to all attempts of teaching her anything. I love that little thing.</div></li></ul><p align="justify"><font color="#0000ff"><strong><u>
Carolina: </u></strong></font></p><ul><li><div align="justify">
After graduating from high school, Caro started Psychology at a local University but it wasn't what she was expecting it to be. She began to work pretty much at the same time, and continues to do so now, currently employed as an administrative employee at a local car dealership. Dealing with customers and managing several branches is something that comes naturally to her, so she is now looking at returning to school and see if she can find something in that area that she can study.</div></li><li><div align="justify">In addition to her current job, she has now begun to work with Gaby, taking on some administrative duties; the same applies to Santi's company, although she is just starting (in both cases)</div></li><li><div align="justify">Carolina continues to live in Cambridge, ON with her boyfriend Matt, about 30 min away, but they will be moving closer very soon. They have two cats, Kovu and Primrose. They are twins, they are very young still and they are the cutest thing ever.</div></li></ul><p align="justify"><strong><font color="#ff0000"><u>Juan:</u></font></strong></p><ul><li><div align="justify">Similar story: he graduated from high school and tried a couple of careers at school but could not find the one that really interested him. He has been working since, mostly in the food business. Like Caro, he was temporarily laid off during the pandemic break, but while his sister was almost immediately brought back, he ended losing his job for good.</div></li><li><div align="justify">Soon after that, Juan started to work in the kitchen with Gaby. My wife taught him how to make the empanadas dough, something that takes a lot of time and was a very high cost for us, because we would have to go all the way to Toronto to buy them, from places that were not very reliable with their times, and even less with the quality of the product they sold. With Juan in charge of this side of the business, Gaby is much more relieved and can definitely focus on the rest. I would say that both of them are very happy with the way things are going.</div></li><li><div align="justify">The good news is that Juan did find his passion: he started to come to Berlin's practices and games and shoot video or just take pictures. We soon saw that his work was absolutely astonishing. The action pictures he takes are superb, and his post processing and video editing skills have been improving day by day. As of two months ago or so, he started his own business, <a href="http://www.cloudnorthvisuals.com" target="_blank"><strong>Cloud North Visuals</strong></a>, and has partnered up with Santiago and also with Ryan's recruiting company, producing highlight videos, documentaries for our club, and many other things. He even gets hired to do work outside of the family businesses, whether it is a concert, a video clip or some other sports, personal or corporate events.</div></li><li><div align="justify">Juan still lives with us and has been dating Meaghan for quite some time now.</div></li></ul><p align="justify"><strong><font color="#ff0080"><u>
Florencia:</u></font></strong></p><ul><li><div align="justify"><strong><font color="#ff0080">
</font></strong> Flor is currently in Grade 12 and graduating next Spring. At almost 17, she has her whole life ahead of her and that can be a little scary. Since she is playing soccer for Berlin, and doing quite well, she has already been approached by many schools in the US, so she is currently weighing her options.</div></li><li><div align="justify">She is still very much into arts, especially music and dance, and she is completely obsessed with K-POP these days, which of course opens the door to a lot of jokes coming from the siblings... OK, and me.</div></li><li><div align="justify"> She still doesn't know what exactly she is going to study, so she is a little stressed about it. She still has time though. In the meantime, she continues to work at a Tim Hortons and spends her time studying, playing soccer or going out with her boyfriend Keagan.</div></li><li><div align="justify">Like I did a few years ago in Waterloo, I got to coach Florencia for Berlin and she is also the team's captain. A lot of pressure for one kid, being the coach's daughter, the owner's sister AND the captain, but she thinks nothing of it. She is clearly the best person for the job, as she is committed, supportive, leads by example and is always bringing everybody up with her positive attitude. This kid is going to go places, I can feel that.</div></li><li><div align="justify">Flor still lives with us, but I would expect her to move to the US in the fall of 2021. Time will tell.</div></li></ul><p align="justify">
So there it is. This is where we are, 20 years to the day since I arrived in Canada, and two or three years since I stopped blogging the last time. Will you have to wait another two years to see what's next? Hopefully not!<br /></p>
<div><br /></div>
<div align="center" text="text"><img alt="" border="0" height="11" src="http://lh5.google.com/LFWaterloo/R4_iodmoZ2I/AAAAAAAABBc/OAIBoCrpoTg/separator%5B10%5D.jpg" style="border-width: 0px;" width="191" /></div>

<p><font color="#0080c0"><strong><u>Gabriel:</u></strong></font></p><ul><li><div align="justify">
<p><strong><font color="#8000ff"><u>Gabriela:</u></font></strong></p><ul><li><div align="justify">
Carolina: </u></strong></font></p><ul><li><div align="justify">
Florencia:</u></font></strong></p><ul><li><div align="justify"><strong><font color="#ff0080">

<div align="justify" text="text"><img width="30" height="30" align="left" style="border-width: 0px; margin: 0px 6px 0px 0px;" alt="Canada" src="http://lh4.google.com/LFWaterloo/R6QCNo9hyHI/AAAAAAAABIA/UVlWr4UKdIs/Canada_thumb%5B2%5D.jpg" border="0"></div><div align="justify" text="text">It’s Sunday evening and I am working in the dining room, but not with hurry or pressing need (it’s almost like I am doing to kill some time). It’s cool outside, but the big rainfalls this week have cleared all the snow (which we had, and in a big quantity). The kids are either working or with friends; Gaby went over some friends and she is still not back, which obviously means she is having a great time!</div><div align="justify" text="text"><br></div><div align="justify" text="text">I am listening to Argentine soccer while I work. When I have the feeling a goal is coming, I simply <Alt>+<Tab> and watch it; otherwise, I pretend I am listening to the radio. Florencia baked brownies, so the house smells really good (and the brownies taste great). In order to warm my stomach and my spirit, I made me a cup of instant pea soup, my favourite (I still have some boxes from Gaby’s trip to Argentina last December). I also have a bottle with unsweetened orange juice, also from Argentina, because you cannot buy that flavour here in Canada for some reason.</div><div align="justify" text="text"><br></div><div align="justify" text="text">While I am doing work, I am already planning the week that is just beginning, and that looks busy. I also have some other ideas and projects in my mind, things that I keep telling myself I have to put on paper some day. The day went easily, and we are getting close to dinner time. Gaby told me that we will have veal schnitzels with mashed potatoes, so my poor stomach is already excited with those news.</div><div align="justify" text="text"><br></div><div align="justify" text="text">We have a quiet life these days. Gaby, the kids and I are all super busy, which for example has caused this blog to stay in the back burner for so long. I never forget about it though. I keep writing down stories that I <u>need</u> to write, but that I never sit down to actually follow through. I keep promise myself that next time I have to spend a night in a hotel, I will spend an hour or two writing a couple of posts. I never do it. Maybe this week? Who knows!</div><div align="justify" text="text"><br></div><div align="justify" text="text">That is all I have. I just wanted to give you a glimpse of my daily life, after so much time. Life keeps going on, and everything is OK. We live well, and that’s a good thing. I never stop thinking about home, my family, my friends, the sounds, the music, the food and the traditions that we miss, but living here and today is not that bad.</div><div align="justify" text="text"><br></div><div align="justify" text="text">I send you all a hug. We’ll talk soon.</div><div align="justify" text="text"></div>
<div><br></div>
<div align="center" text="text"><img width="191" height="11" style="border-width: 0px;" alt="" src="http://lh5.google.com/LFWaterloo/R4_iodmoZ2I/AAAAAAAABBc/OAIBoCrpoTg/separator%5B10%5D.jpg" border="0"></div>

Hablamos pronto.</div>

A quarter of a century. Exactly half my age. On a cool Saturday in 1992, Gaby and I tied the knot and began to live our lives together, building the wonderful family we have today.</div> <div align="justify" text="text"> </div> <div align="justify" text="text">It’s been 25 years in which we shared great times, but also bad times. We had beautiful memories, but also very sad ones. We grew up together, became better people, better spouses, and eventually, we became parents (and hopefully we are getting better at that too). We relied on those who love us, and got rid of those who didn’t. And with every single good and bad moment, and every single good and bat thing that happened to us, we got stronger. Together.</div> <div align="justify" text="text"> </div> <div align="justify" text="text">I cannot imagine my life without my wife. She is the main reason why I keep doing the things that I do. She still is the first thing I think about when I get up, and her face is the last thing I see before I fall asleep. She helped me when I fell, encouraged me while I was trying to get up, and kept me focused once I started to walk again. I hope one day I can do for her at least half of what she has done for me already. </div> <div align="justify" text="text"> </div> <div align="justify" text="text">I love you, Gaby. I had had a difficult season with my U21 Men team, and with Santi turning 21 soon, there was no real reason for me to continue. However, coaching the U21 Women's team had been such a rewarding experience in spite of having one on a 0-11-1 season, that I decided to give it one last shot.</div> <p align="justify">Once again I struggled with finding skilled, hard working and committed players (at one point it seemed like I could get 2 out of those 3 qualities at best), but in the end I succeeded, even though the season was only slightly better than the previous one. What I was not planning to do last year was becoming Florencia's coach as well! As happy as we all were about Flor having finally made a Rep team (after 4 attempts! Talk about perseverance...), I was definitely unhappy with the way the team was being run. There were WAY too many coaches on the field, and not only the difference in styles was creating a lot of confusion around the players, some of those coaches seemed to have little to no skills to work with 12, 13 year old girls. It was too much for me; knowing that other parents knew I was a coach too and might be waiting for me to say something, I chose to remove myself from the field. It was easier at first, as I was still recovering from my surgery. After that, I would just drop Flor off, go to a Tim Hortons nearby and work for an hour and a half, and then come back to pick her up...</p> <p align="justify">It looks like I wasn't the only one who had issues with the way things were going, because the coaching team ended being fired around April (roughly a month before the season started, but only two weeks before the first tournament). Like with Santi years before, I got a late evening call in which I was offered to take over. I slept on it... I was concerned about committing to two teams, given my hectic work schedule, but the club promised they would accommodate to it, giving me back to back practice times and making sure that my home games would be on the same day, also back to back. I agreed, and they did deliver, so things went fairly easily. I will talk in more detail about this process when I write about Flor. This story is not about her! </p> <p align="justify">I began to coach a group of 17 very energetic, hard working, dedicated and... talkative girls. There was a little of everything: a few girls, like Flor, who were playing competitive soccer for the first time, and that obviously had very diverse skills; there was another group of other girls who were on their second or third season as rep players, so I leaned on them during the first few months of the season. Among these girls, we had the player I want to talk about in today's story.</p> <p align="justify">She was a tiny girl, with good skills, very easy to coach; she could kick that ball really well! It was very nice working with her because she was willing to do whatever I asked her without asking any questions. Since she was one of our strongest kickers, I would have her go up the field to take corner and free kicks. One of Florencia's goals came as a rebound from a superb free kick she had taken. I promised her that she would take the next penalty kick we were given, but it just happened that she would be on the bench every time we were awarded one! We joked about it, saying that next time that happened I would have one of my players to fake an injury so she could go in...</p> <p align="justify">Her hard work and dedication paid off; she got better and better as the season progressed. Even though she had played mostly as a defender during the first half of the season, she started to take the occasional shift in the midfield. It clearly wasn't her natural position, though, but she still enjoyed playing in there so I figured it would be a nice way to reward her. I kept praising her game after game and I could see how her confidence was growing.</p> <p align="justify">Very educated and obviously influenced by her family (her very supportive parents would be at every game and most of the practices), she would come to shake my hand and thank me at the end of every practice and every game. That made my heart melt, and soon I would be making sure that my assistant coach and whoever else was helping me that day would line up behind me so they too would get the handshake and see how nice it felt to be thanked for our volunteer work. It was the highlight of my practices.</p> <p align="justify">The season ended, and I got promoted to coach the B team. I knew that moving to a different team meant that I would not be coaching the majority of these girls the following season, so the process of picking my roster for 2016/17 was very difficult for me. I sat down with my assistant coach for a good two hours, writing names, only to scratch them later and start all over again. This kid was definitely in a group of six or seven that we were considering. In the end, we felt that it would probably be better for her to spend another season with the C team, keep building on her defensive skills, become one of the top two or three players, gain even more confidence and then be one of my top choices for call ups. I thought she would rather stay, play pretty much every single game as a starter for her old team and almost never come off, than to move up and start off the bench in most of the games, as I already had very strong defenders. I made a very difficult decision, thinking that it was the right way to look after my player and her development.</p> <p align="justify">Boy, was I wrong.</p> <p align="justify">I got a nasty e-mail from the parents (one of many that, I found out, they sent to other people in the club). I sent a long, very respectful reply, praising my now former player and explaining the reasons why I had made such an unpopular decision. I got no response to that one. </p> <p align="justify">The next weekend, I went to the C team practice looking to talk to her and a couple more players that I felt I owed an explanation. She did not show. Only a few days later, I found out that her parents had pulled her and she would now play for another city.</p> <p align="justify">I know our paths will cross again soon. I will be coaching against her team at least twice this coming summer. I hope that when that happens, I can say hello to her again. I know her parents are still mad because they ignore me when I say hello to them. It’s OK , they look after their daughter. I cannot expect everybody to conduct themselves the way I do. Also, I cannot expect them to understand that I really had their daughter's best interest in mind when I made the decision I made, as hard as it was.</p> <p align="justify">The problem is that I miss those tiny handshakes...</p> <div align="center" text="text"><img style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="" src="http://lh5.google.com/LFWaterloo/R4_iodmoZ2I/AAAAAAAABBc/OAIBoCrpoTg/separator%5B10%5D.jpg" width="191" height="11"></div> <div> </div> <div align="justify" text="text"><img style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin: 0px 6px 0px 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="Argentina" src="http://lh5.google.com/LFWaterloo/R6QCM49hyFI/AAAAAAAABHw/F4MPCCgk1PU/Argentina_thumb%5B3%5D.jpg" width="30" align="left" height="30">A finales de 2015 dije que ya no iba a dirigir más fútbol, que es lo que hago todos los años incluyendo el presente... pero esa vez era seguro seguro! Ella no estuvo allí. Tampoco puedo esperar que entiendan que yo realmente creí que estaba haciendo lo mejor para su hija y su desarrollo como jugadora cuando tomé esa decisión, difícil como fue.</p> <p align="justify">El problema es que extraño esos apretones de mano al final de cada práctica…</p> <div class="bgtags" align="justify"><i>Blogalaxia Tags: <a href="http://www.blogalaxia.com/tags/Waterloo" rel="tag">Waterloo</a>,<a href="http://www.blogalaxia.com/tags/Canada" rel="tag">Canada</a>,<a href="http://www.blogalaxia.com/tags/parenting" rel="tag">parenting</a></i></div>Gabrielhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02518586278759253084noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29401367.post-71401495051278119492017-03-29T18:22:00.001-04:002017-03-29T18:22:31.540-04:00WW#418 - Summer season begins<div style="text-align: center"><a href="http://wordlesswednesday.blogspot.ca/" target="_blank"><img style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguDCn7NihcaCUfU9t8vgNnNLsKOYZ4_oGnd51u7DtykoAyU_HFIE1vva3KSIZMImYiZ-xWZjWyPP88-ewI34ABQgjAnBrCNbbwwweExVvFMkMsiPHiFd6JJslqr0mZTaJ-6627gQ/s300/wordless2.gif"></a></div> <div style="text-align: center"> </div> <div style="text-align: center"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-99QVPQ3QNdg/WNwzouGFD2I/AAAAAAAAOTU/H4AQARWvZbQ/s1600-h/20170328_1934134.jpg"><img title="20170328_193413" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="20170328_193413" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-0RPGo-hrrPc/WNwzpjcQsgI/AAAAAAAAOTY/ipjadAb81Po/20170328_193413_thumb1.jpg?imgmax=800" width="804" height="454"></a></div> <div style="text-align: center"> </div> <div style="text-align: center"><i>More pictures from <a href="http://www.create-with-joy.com/">Create with Joy</a><i>, <a href="http://image-in-ing.blogspot.ca/">Image-in-ing</a>, <a href="http://www.astarinmyownuniverse.com/">Star Traci</a>, <a href="http://naturalmentemama.com/">Naturalmente Mamá</a>, <a href="http://ohmyheartsiegirl.com/">Oh my Heartsie Girl</a> </i>and <a href="http://pixiedusk.livejournal.com/">Glimmer of Hope</a></i></div> <div style="text-align: center"><em></em> </div> <div style="text-align: center" align="justify"></div> <div style="text-align: center"><a href="http://technorati.com/tag/wordless+wednesday" rel="tag"><img style="border-left-width: 0pt; border-right-width: 0pt; vertical-align: middle; border-bottom-width: 0pt; margin-left: 0.4em; border-top-width: 0pt" alt=" " src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-HgX8NrgcaaA/US-ZBs1E5dI/AAAAAAAADFM/la8AeOwFoRQ/s1600/Technorati-icon%25255B5%25255D.png">Wordless Wednesday</a></div> <div style="text-align: center"> </div> <div style="text-align: center"><strong><font color="#0000ff" size="5">Wordless Wednesday links</font></strong></div> <div style="text-align: center"> </div> <div style="text-align: center"><script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.inlinkz.com/cs.php?id=706337"></script></div> <div style="text-align: center"> </div> <div style="text-align: center"><strong><font color="#9b00d3" size="5">Miércoles Mudo, the Spanish version of Wordless Wednesday</font></strong></div> <div style="text-align: center"> </div> <div style="text-align: center"><script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.inlinkz.com/cs.php?id=705727"></script></div>Gabrielhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02518586278759253084noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29401367.post-83305723169752611932017-03-24T07:04:00.000-04:002017-04-01T16:38:58.558-04:00My life as a coach - #01<div align="center" text="text"><em>(En español más abajo)</em></div> <div align="justify" text="text"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Y8OLV53-Wqc/WNWLFR8sofI/AAAAAAAAOSY/ncxBxrqpqKI/s1600-h/image%25255B3%25255D.png"><img title="image" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; display: block; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="image" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-MPY1-ZK9FbQ/WNWLGCtJUmI/AAAAAAAAOSc/YUn3HeSEB-4/image_thumb%25255B1%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="484" height="388"></a></div> <div align="justify" text="text"> </div> <div align="justify" text="text"><img style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin: 0px 6px 0px 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="Canada" src="http://lh4.google.com/LFWaterloo/R6QCNo9hyHI/AAAAAAAABIA/UVlWr4UKdIs/Canada_thumb%5B2%5D.jpg" width="30" align="left" height="30">I met this kid through the recommendation of a fellow coach. I was told that he was playing house league (by definition, our recreational soccer league) but that he was very good and should probably try out for our 'Rep' (competitive) team. I watched him playing indoor soccer and yes, the kid was definitely good. I talked to his parents (very good people as well) and I recommended they signed him up for the upcoming tryouts.</div> <div align="justify" text="text"> </div> <div align="justify" text="text">The boy went through the tryouts without problems and made the B team (the one where I was an assistant coach). He had a very good season, so it was not very strange to see him make the transition to our A squad a couple of seasons later. He had really good skills, great work ethic and was very coachable. He was 100% lefty, so I immediately picked him as my favourite. :-)</div> <div align="justify" text="text"> </div> <div align="justify" text="text">Santi (who had decided to go back from the A to the B team) rejoined him a year later, and by that time they were not only going to the same school but had also become close friends. He did not enjoy soccer that year; he was struggling on the field and as a consequence, his confidence was shot. At the end of that season, he actually quit the team. I was very sad when I found out, he had so much potential! I did something I had not done before and that I did very few times after: I talked to him to convince him to come back. I had an interesting proposal for him:</div> <div align="justify" text="text"> </div> <div align="justify" text="text"><em><font color="#f79646">- I know you were not happy with the way you were playing, and that you are not comfortable in the position we made you play last summer. Now listen to this: we are going to play in a winter league and we have no goalkeeper. I have seen you play in net at house league, and I know you do it for fun, but I also know you are very good at it. Would you like to try playing in net?</font></em></div> <div align="justify" text="text"> </div> <div align="justify" text="text">He actually agreed and came back. To say he shone in net is an understatement. He had a very good winter season, but the best was yet to come. For the next four years, he was not only one of my best players, but in my opinion, he was one of the best goalkeepers in the province at that age group. He was a key player in some of our biggest games and was instrumental in taking our team to the finals of the Ontario Cup. Many times I would say to him at the end of a game:</div> <div align="justify" text="text"> </div> <div align="justify" text="text"><em><font color="#f79646">- I'm lucky there were no scouts watching our game tonight because you would be gone by this weekend...</font></em></div> <div align="justify" text="text"> </div> <div align="justify" text="text">He had always been very thankful for the opportunities he had been given, another sign of a very well raised kid. Often, he would reply to my praises saying something along the lines of <em><font color="#008000">'I'm here because of you'</font></em>. It was very nice of him, though I kept reminding him that it wasn't me the one making those incredible saves. It was all him. I just asked him to come back, that was all! What a nice kid, though. Pure gold.</div> <div align="justify" text="text"> </div> <div align="justify" text="text">Around November of 2012, I heard of some college soccer event in Michigan, and I happened to be working in the area. I called my son and told him about it; I said to him that I could pick him up and take him there along with two of his friends, so they could attend the event. I told Santi to ask our goalkeeper, but he politely declined. In case you're not a regular reader, you can click <strong><a href="http://www.lfwaterloo.com/2013/02/santis-biggest-goal.html">here</a></strong> and see how things went for the three players that did go. This kid would have probably been as successful, if not more.</div> <div align="justify" text="text"> </div> <div align="justify" text="text">When he made the transition from high school to the university, he, of course, made the team without problems, and he was their starting keeper from day one (still is). He went through a series of injuries (some of them serious), so his availability to play for my team was logically affected. Still, he showed up whenever he could, even if he was not 100%. On August 6th, 2015, he was there, guarding the net, as we lost to Sigma FC Academy in what would be my last game as a men's soccer coach.</div> <div align="justify" text="text"> </div> <div align="justify" text="text">It's not like I never saw him again; like I said, he's very close friends with Santi so we are still somehow in touch. Occasionally, I would go to watch him play for our local University team. Last summer, I was there watching him as he once again stole the show in a tough 1-1 tie against the stronger Western Ontario team.</div> <div align="justify" text="text"> </div> <div align="justify" text="text">I waited for him to leave the field, of course. We greeted, and I said to him once again:</div> <div align="justify" text="text"> </div> <div align="justify" text="text"><em><font color="#f79646">- You still are the greatest...</font></em></div> <div align="justify" text="text"> </div> <div align="justify" text="text">His response was the usual:</div> <div align="justify" text="text"> </div> <div align="justify" text="text"><em><font color="#008000">- I owe it all to you.
