These 26 years have been filled with great moments, and a few difficult ones as well. We went through some very challenging times in the beginning (if you've been following my blog for a while, you'll already know that), but the end result has more than justified everything we went through.
So, how are we doing? We're doing great!
I'm still working for the same company I've always worked for. In a couple of weeks, I'll celebrate my 25th anniversary here, and I still love my job as much as I did on day one. My health has improved significantly. I've lost a lot of weight over the past few years, especially after my gastric bypass surgery. Another thing that greatly improved my quality of life was the hip replacement surgery I had three years ago. For the first time in almost 30 years, I can walk and even run without pain. By the time I had the operation, I was living with constant pain.
Gaby is still running her food business and doing very well. A year ago, she finally opened her own storefront right in downtown Kitchener, and it's absolutely beautiful. The entire space was renovated by Carolina and her boyfriend Patricio, and they did a fantastic job.
Santiago remains very active in the local soccer community, working with several clubs across the province while also running our media company. A few months ago, he got engaged to his girlfriend Sam, and they're getting married in July of next year.
Carolina is also engaged to Patricio, her boyfriend of several years. Patricio owns his own renovation company and does outstanding work. Carolina helps him whenever her own job allows, but most of the time she's the public face of Gaby's business, whether at the storefront or at the Farmers' Market on Thursdays and Saturdays. They haven't set a wedding date yet.
Juan is still with his longtime girlfriend, Maggie. They gave us the greatest gift on January 24 of this year: our beautiful grandson, Nico! Juan works at a car dealership and is doing very well. We were very fortunate because they moved in with us just before the baby was born while they searched for a larger apartment. They've now found one, and in a few months they'll be moving into their own home. I'll miss seeing my grandson every day, but they'll still be very close by.
Florencia spent a couple of years studying in Sault Ste. Marie, a city about 850 kilometres northwest of here, but she has since moved back to Kitchener and transferred to one of the local universities. She's working hard, and with any luck she'll graduate in the spring of 2027.
So that's where we are all these years later. Everyone is healthy, everyone is working, and we're fortunate enough to still see each other almost every day. Life is very good, and now we've been blessed with this wonderful grandson who brings us joy every single day.
I've always said that I would do it all over again without a second thought, despite the very difficult first year we endured. I still feel the same way, but at this point I believe this wonderful country has repaid all that hard work and sacrifice many times over. I love my country of birth, and it still hurts to see it struggling so much, but Canada is my country too, and this is where I'll remain for the rest of my days.
No rush, though.
