This has been going around for a while now, and I finally decided to join in. I've seen posts on
Ale Marge's and
Lunaisa's blogs, and the one that decided me to go for it was the one on Mike's "
Pehuajeando".
The premise is simple: it's an 'ask me anything' game. I asked Mike for my questions and this is what he asked me (that cheater sent me six!)
1. What was the 'icing on the cake' for you to decide to emigrate?
I wouldn't say there was an 'icing on the cake moment' but a seemingly random event that eventually drove us towards that decision. Me and Gaby had been concerned for a while already, as even though we both were working and doing quite well, still we were living from paycheque to paycheque. We had no savings, didn't own a house and even the car we had (a very small VW Gol) was shared with my in-laws... We were worried about our future, but more about our kids' future; however, we hadn't entertained the possibility of moving to another country. Until one day...
Gaby came back from work one Sunday, "Clarín" newspaper in hand. She had found an ad from the Canadian Embassy, saying that they were inviting IT professionals to attend an informative seminar about immigration. "Why don't you apply?", she said, "You always wanted to know Canada, maybe this could be our chance". I sent my application and they soon replied asking me to show up on December 8th. "Let's not get too excited", I told her. "It must be really difficult to get the visa". I didn't know then, but I had already qualified mostly based on my age and profession. 2. Why did you choose Canada and more specifically, Waterloo?
As I said before, Canada was always a dream for me. Same as my father, who dreamed his whole life of getting to know USA (and his dream came true just a year before he passed, thanks to my brother), I had always dreamed of getting to the big neighbour to the North. Even more, while being in New Jersey (like today) on a business trip in April of 1998, I drove for 8 straight hours in the rain on a Friday evening, arriving to Bangor, Maine at 2:00 AM. Then I spent the whole weekend driving around. Why? Since I didn't have a visa to enter Canada then, I wanted at least to know how it looked from the outside... :-)
My other two 'dream destinations' were New Zealand and Norway. One of these days...
Re: Waterloo, we didn't pick it, but Waterloo chose us instead. By the time I landed my first job there, I was so desperate that I had applied for positions everywhere in Canada (Vancouver, Yellowknife, Quebec, Saint John (NB), etcetera). We were very lucky, because we 'landed' in a place that captivated us from the very first day, and that we still love.
3. What was your families' reaction to you moving out?
Variable. Gaby's family (her mom and brothers) supported us fully, even knowing that we were breaking their hearts by leaving. I got all kinds of different reactions from my side, from the same as Gaby's families coming from my brothers, to a mix of sadness and pride from my Dad and his wife, to indifference from most of the rest.
4. How do you handle nostalgia (homesickness)?
I don't normally feel homesick, except in very specific occasions. Since I was already living in Buenos Aires, away from my family, such huge transition almost felt like a 'natural' step for me. I do know that Gaby misses her family and feels sad sometimes. Luckily, my mother-in-law travels often and stays for long periods of time (which I thank a lot, because she's a great company and help, especially to my wife). Having been able to 'send' Gaby back to Argentina last summer was one of the happiest moments of my recent life, and something she needed dearly. I miss my family and friends, of course, but having to choose between me or my wife going back next, there's no doubt I want her to go.
5. What do you miss the most from Argentina, besides family?
I'm not sure... it's definitely not the food, as having such a great cook at home makes everything easier. Maybe I miss those everyday little things, the soccer talks, those nicknames we put that are impossible to get rid of, going out with a friend for a 'feca' (a coffee in Argentine slang), etc. Some of it, luckily, I still get the chance to see it and live it when I participate of mail lists like Argentina-Deportes, which is moderated by -oh, surprise!- Mike.
6. I was about to add a sixth question, asking how it feels to be a fan of a team in the brink of extinction, but I decided not to...
Oh, a tongue-in-cheek one. I'm a big boy and that's why I will answer to it... I have already recognized that I have a past as a 'chicken' (that's the nickname River Plate fans get in Argentina), but it's been a long time since blue and white blood has been flowing through my veins. I know Vélez is a small team, but it's full of glory. It has achieved much more than many of what in Argentina are called 'big teams', and has given the soccer world quality players like Carlos Bianchi, José Luis Chilavert, Mauro Zárate or more recently Jonás Gutiérrez. Small team and everything, we only went into relegation once, and that was because of a fixed match between Atlanta and Independiente (who got a key player in exchange for letting Atlanta win).
More importantly, we never -ever- came in last (note: your River Plate just did). :-)

La premisa es simple: es un juego de 'dale, preguntame lo que quieras'. Le pedí mis cinco preguntas a Mike y esto es lo que me envió (el muy tramposo me mandó seis!)
1. Cuál fue la gota que derramó el vaso por la cual decidieron emigrar?
No hubo una 'gota que derramó el vaso' sino un evento fortuito que nos llevó hacia la la decisión. Nosotros hacía tiempo que veníamos preocupados porque por más que tanto Gaby como yo trabajábamos y nos iba realmente muy bien, seguíamos viviendo 'al día'. No teníamos ahorros, todavía no teníamos casa propia, y hasta el automóvil que teníamos (un VW Gol muy chiquito), lo compartíamos con mis suegros... Estábamos preocupados por nuestro futuro, pero más que nada por el futuro de nuestros hijos; sin embargo, no habíamos hablado de emigrar. Hasta que un día...
Gaby llegó un domingo de su negocio, con el Diario "Clarín" en la mano. Allí, me dijo, había encontrado un aviso de que la Embajada de Canadá estaba invitando a profesionales de sistemas a un seminario informativo con vistas a emigrar allí. "Por qué no te presentás?", me dijo, "Vos siempre quisiste conocer Canadá, tal vez esta sea nuestra oportunidad". Envié mis datos y me contestaron pronto diciéndome que por favor me presentara el 8 de Diciembre. "No nos hagamos muchas ilusiones", le dije. "Debe ser muy difícil conseguir la visa para emigrar allí". Lo que yo no sabía es que por mi profesión y edad, ya había calificado... El resto es historia conocida, y la pueden encontrar

2. Por qué eligieron Canadá y mas precisamente, Waterloo?
Como dije antes, Canadá fue siempre mi sueño. Así como mi padre había soñado toda la vida conocer Estados Unidos (cosa que logró sólo un año antes de morir, gracias a mi hermano), yo siempre había añorado llegar al 'verdadero' gran pais del Norte. Es más, estando en New Jersey (como hoy) en un viaje que hice por trabajo en Abril de 1998, manejé durante 8 horas seguidas un viernes a la tardecita, en medio de la lluvia, llegando a Bangor, Maine a las 2:00 AM. Luego pasé el fin de semana paseando por la zona. La idea? Ya que no tenía visa para entrar a Canadá, al menos ver cómo lucía desde afuera... :-)
Mis otros 'lugares soñados' para conocer eran Nueva Zelandia y Noruega. Algún día...
A Waterloo no lo elegimos nosotros, sino que Waterloo nos eligió. En el momento en que conseguí mi primer trabajo allí, estaba tan desesperado que había aplicado por trabajos por todos lados (Vancouver, Yellowknife, Quebec, Saint John (NB), etcetera). Tuvimos mucha suerte, porque 'caímos' en un lugar que nos cautivó desde el primer día y del que aún hoy seguimos enamorados.
3. Cual fue la respuesta de sus familias a la mudanza de ustedes?
Variable. La familia de Gaby (su madre y hermanos), total apoyo, aún sabiendo que les partíamos el corazón al irnos. Del lado mío, tuve de todo, desde reacciones similares a las de mi familia política por parte de mis hermanos, a la tristeza y orgullo combinados de mi padre y su esposa, a la indiferencia de otros.
4. Como manejan las nostalgias?
Yo no creo sentir nostalgia, salvo ocasiones muy puntuales. Como yo vivía en Buenos Aires, lejos de mi familia, se me hizo más 'natural' semejante transición. Yo sé que Gaby extraña y se pone tristona a veces. Por suerte, mi suegra viene muy seguido y se queda mucho tiempo (lo que agradezco mucho, porque es una excelente compañía y ayuda para todos, pero especialmente mi esposa). Haber podido 'mandar' a Gaby a Argentina el año pasado fue uno de los momentos más felices de mi vida reciente, a ella le hacía mucha falta. Yo extraño a mi familia y mis amigos, por supuesto, pero si tengo que elegir entre que vaya mi esposa o vaya yo, ni lo pienso.
5. Qué es lo que mas extrañan de la Argentina, aparte de la familia?
No estoy seguro... la comida no, porque teniendo a semejante cocinera en la casa se hace todo más fácil. Tal vez lo que extrañe más tiene que ver con esas cosas de todos los días, las charlas de futbol, los apodos que ponemos y que son 'a rosca' porque no te los sacás más, las salidas a tomar un 'feca' con los amigos, etc. Algo de eso, por suerte, aún lo tengo cuando participo en listas de correo como Argentina-Deportes, que comanda -oh, sorpresa!- Mike.
6. Estuve a punto de agregar una sexta, preguntando que se siente hinchar por un equipo en extincion, pero me arrepentí...
Yo me la banco, y por eso voy a contestar... ya he reconocido mi pasado gallina, pero hace tiempo ya que en mis venas corre sangre azul y blanca. Sé que Vélez es un equipo chico, pero está lleno de gloria. Ha logrado más, mucho más que muchos de los equipos denominados 'grandes' de Argentina, y ha dado a conocer al mundo jugadores de calidad superlativa como Carlos Bianchi, José Luis Chilavert, Mauro Zarate o Jonás Gutiérrez. Equipo chico y todo, sólo nos fuimos al descenso una vez, y debido a un partido arreglado entre Atlanta e Independiente (que como premio a dejarse ganar, se quedó con el pase de un jugador clave).
Y lo más importante, nunca salimos últimos. :-)
