A typical weeknight

(En español más abajo)

CanadaThe situation: It's Tuesday, and all of the kids seem to be busy. Santi has a game in London (100 km West of Waterloo), Caro has to referee two games in Cambridge (30 km South), Florencia has gymnastics in Kitchener (our twin city, but it's all across town, so it's a 25 minutes drive). The only one who seems to be free is Juan... Let the show begin!

13:00:
Santi has to work, so he can't play. I will drive Carolina to her games in Cambridge and Gaby will take care of Florencia (she has gym class). Juan is at his friend's place, so Gaby will pick him up on his way to take Florencia

13:22:
I find out that Santi is at home already, he left school early. I tell him to call and see if he can move his shift forward so he can actually make tonight's game (and keep his streak alive). He is reticent, so I do my best to light some fire under his butt.

13:44:
I printed the game sheet for tonight, and I'm on my way to drop them off at Santi's coach's place. I get a call from Gaby saying that Santi is at work, they said OK to the shift change (then he did call!). I get back to my office without having even left the building and print a new game sheet with Santi's name on it. Now I'm driving Santi to London (he will be a little late), Gaby will take care of Carolina and we're trying to see if we can get a friend to take care of Florencia. Juan will have to come back from his friend's place walking.

14:14:
New change of plans. Santi calls, saying that he can leave at 4:45 PM, so he will go with Steve (the assistant coach); there is not need for me to take him, so I'm back at taking Carolina to Cambridge. I'm at home because I went to pick up my soccer bag thinking that I would need it, so I bring Caro to the office for two hours and Gaby will make sure she takes Santi's stuff to his work so he can change on his way to the game.

16:30:
Florencia is sick, she has a slight fever. She is not going to gymnastics after all. I'm still taking Carolina to Cambridge and Juan is still coming back walking. Santi is about to leave for London.

20:15:
Florencia is home. Carolina's games were a nightmare, thanks to some idiotic parents (that will be the next post); she cried all the way back home. Juan walked back home and is OK. Santi's team is doing very well in London and his game is about to end.

22:00:
Everybody is in bed except for Santi, who just got back home. They won 5-0. It takes some time for him to get into the house, though, because the door is locked and me and Gaby are both passed out in the couch.

Like I said, a typical weeknight. Adaptability is a must when you live at my place! :-)

Wednesday update: Santi went to the Toronto FC game and got totally soaked (the game was cancelled after 60 mins due to rain and lightning and will be replayed in its entirety). Carolina reffed another 2 games in Cambridge and got soaked. Juan was supposed to ref a game in Waterloo, but no one showed up. However, since Gaby couldn't pick him up until one hour later... he got soaked. Florencia had field hockey and... OK, you see the pattern.

Thursday update: They're all busy again, except for Florencia (who has a slight fever again). It's still raining, so I believe all games and practices will be cancelled soon. There's hope...

Sigo siendo yo quien lleve a Carolina a Cambridge, y Juan aún vuelve caminando. Santi está por salir para London.

20:15:

  4. Yikes! I have been pretty grumpy at the lack of organized sports for the kids here, but after treading this post I think I will just enjoy the peace for the next few years.

Shannon, I fully understand. Can I move to Lilongwe with you guys? :-)

Burzum, don't be like this, remember that you were a kid before, so somebody must have done these things for you. Plus... they bring so much joy to my life that I'm more than willing to put up with all of this for the many years to come.

Oh... and if you thought Tuesday was busy... you should have seen last night!!! :-)
