Néstor Kirchner (1950 - 2010)

Canada My home country, Argentina, is shocked. Former president (and husband of the current head of state) Néstor Kirchner passed away yesterday at only 60 years of age. Serious health concerns had been mentioned, and some media had even suggested that Kirchner 'was dying' not long ago, which caused a violent reaction by the press that supported the government, calling these expressions (and by extension, those who conveyed them) as 'anti-democratic', something very common these days. The official cause of Kirchner's has been ruled a heart attack, but one can still wonder if there was any truth in what the media had reported.

Kirchner's passing leaves Argentina immersed in a sea of uncertainty. We're talking, without a doubt, about the most important Argentine politician in the last 15 years or more. Though he became president almost by pure luck, winning the ballotage due to former president Menem's decision not to run against him (he had come second to Menem in the first round, with just about 20% of the votes), Kirchner was able to earn a very positive image very quickly, the product of his brilliant first 100 days in the office. He took care of problems that Argentina had been dealing with for decades, like the restructuring of the Armed Forces and the Supreme Court, and he reopened the trials of the members of the Military Junta, and dealt with him for good. He went from being an virtually unknown politician to earn a very high positive image within weeks. Like Raúl Alfonsín back in 1983, it certainly looked like Kirchner was the one who was on his way to changing the future of the country.

But Kirchner suffered the same destiny that his predecessor. Whether it was his own lack of capacity of that of who were around them, and with the 'help' of a growing corruption that many mention as even bigger than in the times of Memen, Néstor Kirchner turned on the 'auto pilot' and coasted until the moment of his reelection, in 2007. Then, maybe to the surprise of many who already thought of him as being elected, he endorsed the candidacy of his own wife. Cristina Fernández won the elections easily, with a 40% of the votes, and that's how we had that interesting case of a the power being transferred from a spouse to another. Fernández came with a brilliant résumé as a Senator, it was only a matter of time to see how would she do in an Executive role.

Like her husband had done four years before, when he had broken up with his ally and mentor Eduardo Duhalde, Cristina Fernández soon turned who had been her closest ally into an enemy: the 'Clarín' media group. After having been labeled as being 'hyper officialist', Clarín suddenly became the incarnation of evil. Fernández build a well-known but still surprisingly effective plan, putting herself in a position of fragility and helplessness in front a very powerful enemy that was conspiring against democracy and stability, whose visible face were Argentina's biggest newspapers: 'Clarín' and 'La Nación'. It was incredible to watch how quickly Argentine society polarized, like it had happened in the '70s. All it would take was to have a little argument in which an agreement about politics could not be reached for life-long friends or relative not to talk to each other anymore. It was crazy, intolerance would cause people to break up just because of a difference of ideology. Not only that, they would even feel personally offended by other people's politically thoughts. People have now gone so low that they insult each other just for having different ideas about a specific topic. It's the epitome of intolerance, and that affects both sides of this divided society.

The first years of Cristina Fernández's mandate were conditioned by the misogyny: she wouldn't be able to rule the country just because she is a woman, and it would be her husband running the show behind the curtains, a modern and local Rasputin. These are very difficult times, but I do believe that CFK is strong and capable enough to take control and carry this period to its end without any major problems. It's not sure if the vultures from the opposition, but most noticeably from the own governing party, will let her do it. The future looks uncertain and complicated, but we have to wait.

The last images I have are those of people celebrating Kirchner's death, to the anger of many who are demanding respect; then I would see some of those many who were demanding respect, paying tribute to the late politician... while singing songs that call for the death of the current vice-president, the manager of Clarin newspaper, etc... As mentioned before, the same violence and intolerance, shown by both sides of the society.

History will decide whether Kirchner has earned a spot among Argentina's greatest presidents or whether he was just another one. The truth is that he leaves behind a country that is growing economically, but is totally unstable from the social point of view; he also leaves his widow leading a government that is losing support and continues to confront with the church, the Congress and the agro producers, something that is definitely not recommendable in Argentina. We all remember what happened to Isabel Perón and her government once her husband Juan Perón died; Cristina Fernández is infinitely more intelligent, prepared and apt. This president is surrounded for people as ill-fated as those who surrounded Isabel, but I trust she will have the capacity to limit their movements and govern with the authority and legitimacy that the popular vote gave her. Knowing that Argentines have a very short memory I believe that this is, more than ever, a matter of having faith.

  5. I came especially today to see if you wrote about the news as I was curious about your opinion.

Like I told Guillermo yesterday, I tried to understand politics when I was in Argentina (by the way, I bet the top pic was taken in Perito Moreno, which would make sense considering he was in El Calafate). Argentinean politics looks like a soap opera to me. People deserve better... much better.

  10. Buen resumen Gabriel.
