Imagine any religious leader asking their followers to disobey the law and do whatever their consciences tell them. He/She will be labelled as a 'terrorist' and 'seditious', and many will ask for their head on a platter, denouncing these religions and discriminating against those who follow them, saying that they live in the Middle Ages.

The Pope did exactly the same when talking about same-sex marriage and the majority of the comments I read are like 'I still like him', 'he is such a breath of fresh air', 'we need to give Francis more time' and 'you can't do everything in just one day'.

Is this a blatant case of double standards or just pure hypocrisy?

Imaginen cualquier líder religioso que llame a sus fieles a desconocer las leyes vigentes y hacer lo que sus conciencias le indiquen. Los calificativos van a ir de 'terrorista' y 'sedicioso' para arriba. Muchos van a pedir su cabeza y condenar esas religiones del medioevo y así discriminar a todos los que las practican.

Lo hace el Papa cuando opina sobre el casamiento entre personas del mismo sexo y los comentarios son del estilo 'a mí todavía me gusta', 'hay que darle tiempo a Francisco' y 'no se puede hacer todo en un día'.

Si esto no es el doble standard, entonces qué es? Pura hipocresía nomás?

This will be a short one, but it doesn’t mean it didn’t make my blood boil. I read on Yahoo! today:

“Some Ontarians were a little peeved after an Amber Alert interrupted their Sunday night TV but the Ontario Provincial Police say: too bad. The OPP used the enhanced Amber Alert program for the first time Sunday night, which alerted TV viewers to a missing boy through a red pop-up on the screen. There was also a sharp, repeated alarm sound that interrupted the audio of the TV programs. The alert also broadcast over radio. At the time, police were trying to locate a young boy. Callers had reported he had been physically taken and forced into a minivan in Orillia, Ont. In the end, it turned out the boy was picked up by his parents after they said he had run away from home. The OPP fielded several complaints to 911 about the alert that took over TV and radio. Insp. Patrick Morris, the Orillia OPP detachment commander, said he is "disappointed" with the calls and tweets of viewers annoyed by the alert.”

 

You know what… I cannot believe people will actually complain because an Amber Alert has disrupted their Sunday night TV schedule. Even more, not only they complain, but they also took their anger to phone calls and social media, because well… that what heartless, ignorant ass**les do.

 

I hope they never, ever have to go through such a horrible experience.

Este es cortito, pero no quiere decir que no haya hecho hervir mi sangre. Hoy leí esto en Yahoo!:

“Algunos habitantes de Ontario se mostraron molestos luego de que un Alerta Ámbar interrumpiera sus programas de TV el domingo por la noche, pero la Policía Provincial de Ontario dice: aguántense. La OPP usó el nuevo y mejorado programa de Amber Alert por primera vez el domingo, el que alertó a los televidentes del posible secuestro de un niñito a través de una pantalla roja. También hubo un sonido de alarma agudo y repetido que interrumpió el audio de los programas de TV. Este alerta también se transmitió por radio. En ese momento, la policía trataba de encontrar a un pequeño niño. Gente había llamado para reportar que había sido tomado por la fuerza y metido en una minivan en el pueblo de Orilia, Ontario. Al final resultó que el niño había sido levantado por sus propios padres luego de que se hubiera escapado de su casa. La OPP recibió muchas quejas en el número 911 luego de que el alerta apareciera en la TV y la radio. El inspector Patrick Morris, de la OPP de Orilia, dijo que estaba “desilusionado” con la cantidad de llamadas y tweets de televidentes molestos por el alerta.”

 

Saben qué… no puedo creer que haya habido gente que se haya quejado por un Amber Alert que los distrajo por …un minuto? de su programación de TV de domingo por la noche. Es más, no sólo se quejaron sino que también llevaron su enojo a las llamadas telefónicas y los medios sociales, porque bueno… eso es lo que hacen los imbéciles ignorantes y sin corazón.

 

Espero que nunca, nunca esta ‘gente’ tenga que pasar por una horrible experiencia como esa.

 

Bueno, ya no estoy tan seguro…

This news is about 10 days old, and not much has happened since it first broke, maybe due to the utter ridiculousness of the proposal. But it’s worth mentioning it again, so we all see that we are surrounded by incompetent people no matter where we live.

 

The local chapter of the Teachers' Union was unhappy with the things that our local newspaper (particularly, one of their columnists) was saying about them and their current issues so they came up with a brilliant idea: why not boycott the paper? This meaining, not only they voted (yes, they passed a vote) to cancel their personal subscriptions to The Record, but they also wanted to pull the paper from the ‘Newspapers in Education’ program, which (I’m quoting here) ‘teaches students about their local community and includes features on topics such as antibullying and social justice’. See the irony?

 

So, the union is unhappy with the way they are being portrayed by the media, and what do they do? They try to silence the media! This is the people who are supposed to be educating our children. They want to choose for our kids what they can or cannot read, which voices they should hear, and more importantly, that it is perfectly fine to bully the messenger if the message is not what they want to hear.

 

Sometimes it’s hard for me to accept that we are in fact in the 21st Century.

Esta noticia es de hace unos 10 días, y no mucho ha pasado desde que apareció, tal vez debido a la increíble ridiculez de la propuesta. Pero vale la pena mencionarla de nuevo, así todos podemos ver que estamos rodeados de incompetentes no importa dónde vivamos.

 

La división local de la Unión de Docentes está enojada con las cosas que nuestro periódico local (en particular, una de sus columnistas) ha venido diciendo sobre ellos y su pelea, así que tuvieron una idea brillante: y si le hacemos un boicot al diario? Esto significa que no sólo votaron (ah, sí, hubo una votación) cancelar sus suscripciones personales al Record, sino que también querían sacar el diario del programa ‘Newspapers in Education’, que (y aquí cito) ‘enseña a los estudiantes sobre su comunidad local e incluye noticias en tópicos como la lucha contra el bullying y la justicia social’. Ven la ironía?

 

En síntesis, el sindicato está enojado con la forma en que los medios los muestran, y qué hacen? Tratan de silenciar a los medios! Esta es la gente que se supone debería estar educando a nuestros hijos. Parece que quieren decidir por nuestros hijos qué cosas deberían leer o no, qué voces pueden escuchar, y lo más importante, que está perfectamente bien aplastar al mensajero si el mensaje que propalan no es el que les gustaría oír.

 

A veces se me hace difícil aceptar que ya estamos en pleno Siglo 21.

Our local newspapers picked up a story about a male teacher who has just been found not guilty of sex charges against a female student. It seems like it was an open and shut kind of case, and the evidence presented by the student was not credible at all.

 

Let’s assume that this was the right call, and that the teacher was not guilty: who is going to pay for all the discredit, the embarrassment, the months and months of public humiliation, the fact that he very likely lost his job and will have to move in order to be able to teach again? His name was released to the media immediately following his arrest several months ago, as well as the city where he lived and even which school he was teaching at. The accuser is likely a minor, will she be held responsible for the damage she has caused?

Nuestros periódicos locales levantaron la historia de un docente (varón) que fue absuelto de cargos de abuso sexual contra una de sus estudiantes. Parecería que este fue un juicio muy breve, y que la evidencia que presentó la estudiante no tenía credibilidad alguna.

 

Asummiendo que la decisión fue la correcta y que el profesor no era culpable: quién le va a pagar por todo el descrédito, la vergüenza, los meses y meses de humillación pública, el hecho de que muy probablemente perdió su trabajo y va a tener que mudarse para poder volver a trabajar? Su nombre fue difundido a los medios inmediatamente luego de su arresto meses atrás, y también su ciudad de residencia y hasta la escuela en que enseñaba. La acusadora es seguramente menor de edad, va a hacerse responsable del daño que ha causado?

Reading on Yahoo! how the Canadian Dollar (the loonie) has gone under U$S 0.70 for the first time since 2006. This is somehow related to last week’s post, because one of the most visible effects of this is the difficulty to buy food, with the price of fruits and vegetables increasing almost daily.

 

I remember how the loonie was above par a few years ago, it even reached U$S 1.10 at one point. Now it’s sinking once again, and it’s getting close to the value it had when I first moved to Canada. Predictions for the rest of 2016 are not exactly great either. I guess this year will be an interesting one, economically speaking, but I don’t believe that’s a good thing.

Leyendo en Yahoo! cómo el dólar canadiense (el loonie) ha caído por debajo de U$S 0.70 por primera vez desde 2006. Esto está de algún modo relacionado con el post de la semana pasada, porque uno de los efectos más visibles de esta crisis es la dificultad de comprar alimentos, con los precios de frutas y verduras subiendo casi diariamente.

 

Recuerdo cuando el loonie estaba por encima del par hace años, hasta llegó a U$S 1.10 en un momento. Ahora se hunde de nuevo, y está llegando cerca del valor que tenía cuando llegué a Canadá. Las predicciones para el resto de 2016 no son nada halagüeñas. Creo que este año va a ser interesante en materia económica, y no creo que sea por buenos motivos.

I was listening to The Eric Drozd Show for the first time on our local radio, 570 News, and he was talking to Dr. Sylvain Charlebois, Professor in the College of Business and Economics at the University of Guelph. Among many interesting things he said about the increasing cost of food, in great part due to the loonie depreciation, one of them blew me away: about 81 per cent of all the fruit and vegetables we consume here in Canada are imported. 81 PER CENT! It just blew my mind, like us teenagers say…)

Escuchaba por primera vez el programa The Eric Drozd Show en nuestra radio local, 570 News, y Drozd hablaba con el Dr. Sylvain Charlebois, Profesor en la escuela de Negocios y Economía de la Universidad de Guelph. Entre las muchas cosas interesantes que dijo sobre el creciente precio de los alimentos, en gran parte debido a la caída del ‘loonie’ (nuestro dólar), una de ellas me impactó: cerca del 81 por ciento de todas las frutas y verduras que se consumen aquí en Canadá son importadas. EL81 POR CIENTO! Me voló la cabeza, como decimos nosotros los adolescentes… :-)
