We’re all for the glory – Part 02/03

USA(Continues from here)

As I was telling a couple days ago, Santi’s team was looking very well, with just a couple of games to go. We were still in first position, and our next two games were against the two teams that were chasing us (and only other contenders for the title). We just needed a win out of those two games to make sure that we would be still first after them.

We had the first of our two games on a Saturday evening, and it was a monologue. Our team kept going and going, and all the opponent did was to kick the ball out (sometimes so hard that it would take one or two minutes to bring the ball from the parking lot across the street). We were getting desperate as the minutes passed, and we kept missing incredible goals (we hit the posts at least twice). Desperation cost us dearly, because we screwed up in the back and NorWest scored on us in their first chance of the whole game, which also happened to be the last play of the match. We lost 0-1 and we left with a lot of doubts.

Just two days later, we had an away game against our neighbour team, Cambridge. They had taken a two points lead over us due to having won their own match, so we needed to beat them to get back on top. It looked like we were on the right track because Santi scored soon after kick off, and then Justin put us 2-0 ahead. Things were getting back to normal, but Cambridge scored two on us before the half time, and then another goal in the second half. We had a great chance to even the match via a penalty kick. Santi stood in front of the ball, confident, as he had never missed a PK since joining the Warriors…

Some first times are really, really painful!

After having lost both games, things looked really bad for us. Cambridge had taken a five points lead over us, and NorWest had taken second place, one point ahead, due to another victory. Given that Cambridge had only one game left, you would think we had some hope that they could lose and we would take over by winning our last two matches. But they had to play against Kitchener (our other neighbours), who had lost 14 out of 14 games so far that season. We definitely had no hope.

We went to play our second to last game against Guelph knowing that NorWest had tied. Guys, we will take second place with a win; and we shouldn’t give up on Kitchener, they did much better in their last game so who knows, maybe they pull the upset win”, I said right before the game, but the truth is that I didn’t think we had a chance at all.

We started our game, and it looked very much like our last home game, with our team all over their opponent, but totally unable to score. Our players felt like it didn’t matter anyway, so after that initial push the game fell totally flat and we started to play horribly. Santi’s dream of playing on OYSL (Ontario’s higher level of competition) were over… or at least delayed for yet another year.

We were at about 30 minutes into the second half, score still 0-0, when I got an e-mail from the manager of the Kitchener team:

What???!!! That was a miracle!!! I desperately waved at Santi, and told him (in Spanish) what I had just found out, so he would tell the rest of the players. Then I told the other two coaches and the bench. I knew Santi would know exactly what that meant. We needed to win this game, and then the next, and the title was ours!!!

We only had 15 minutes left, though, and we were playing just horrible. Our two forwards (Santi and Stefan) hadn’t even had a shot to goal so far. Most of our chances had come from one of our midfielders, Nikola, so I suggested we switched them. I knew Santi would be mad, but I also knew that between him and Sam (our best player) they would take control of the midfield and feed the other two guys.

Santi (7) and Justin (14)

The minutes passed, however, and with just two minutes to go, we were still 0-0. We had been given a great chance by our rivals from Kitchener, but we couldn’t do anything with it. We got a corner kick and pretty much all of our players wanted to be in the box, so we had to tell a few of them to stand back, we didn’t want to lose that game like we had lost to NorWest a week ago. We left three guys in the box, our two forwards and Santi.

Justin took the corner kick from the left side and the ball fell right in the middle of the 18 yards…

Definitivamente no había chances.
