Friends

(En español más abajo)
CanadaToday is Friend’s Day in Argentina, a very popular celebration for us (inspired by the first Moon landing). Here and there, you will see people bringing little presents for their buddies, buying flowers for their friends and annoying absolutely everybody with countless dedications on Facebook (I’m guilty of that too).

Today is also my wife’s birthday, the very first we won’t spend together since 1990, if I’m not mistaken. It’s not going to be an easy day for me, that's for sure. I have missed her more then ever this last few days, you will find out why soon.

I’m a very outgoing, extroverted guy, and I’m very social. I don’t, however, have a lot of friends; I wrote earlier (yes, on Facebook) that the word ‘friend’ has been stripped of almost all of its meaning by the social networks; the guy you grew up with is your friend, but for Facebook, someone you added because he’s a fan of the same soccer team you cheer for or likes the same rock band you like is a ‘friend’ too. I despise that.

I will always regret not having ‘that guy’, someone you’ve been friends with since preschool, for example. I don’t know why that happened, maybe because I moved to Buenos Aires when I was only 11 and left all my good friends behind? Strange, I’m still in contact with my friends from Primary School, but barely with all the friends I made once I moved to the big city.

But I do have some really good friends. They have all helped me become a better person, and I owe them a lot. Some don’t even know how important they have been in my life (some do, thankfully). Time has passed, and I live far away now, but I do not forget. And I’m thankful.

There’s a new kind of friends I have made over the past few years: my blog buddies. Knowing them is, in a way, the complete opposite of how it works in normal life. You meet someone, then you get to know him/her, you find common interests and you become friends. With your blog buddies, you start from the common interests, then you get to know them, and maybe, just maybe, you get to know them in person! There are a few of them I feel very close to for different reasons, and I do consider some of them my friends. I can’t think of better examples than Mike and Katie to illustrate this point.

Happy Friend’s Day. I hope you know I’m talking to you. Here’s a great song by the great Roberto Carlos, appropriately called “Friend”:

“Amigo” (“Friend”) by Roberto Carlos

You are by bosom brother, a real friend
Who is always with me on every path and journey
Despite being a man, you still have a child’s soul
Who gives me his friendship, respect and love

I remember the very hard moments
that we went through together
And you never changed,
no matter how tough the times were
Your heart is a house whose doors are wide open
You are really the most certain in uncertain times

In certain difficult moments of life
We look for someone who may help us find our way out
And that word of strength and faith you gave me
Gives me the certitude you were always beside me

You are my bosom friend on each journey
Smile and festive hug in each arrival
You tell me such deep truths in clear sentences
You are really the most certain in uncertain times

I don’t need say all that which I’m telling you
But it’s good to feel you are my great friend
(repeats to fade)

Siempre he sido agradecido.

  3. I agree that the word "friend" is tossed around rather easily these days, but the truth is that a decent number of my virtual and blog acquaintances really have become friends! I'm so glad that I can count you among them, Gabriel.

¡Feliz día! ¡Un abrazo fuerte desde Necochea!
