Embarrassing moments – #37

Embarrassing moments

CanadaI was at one of Carolina's games in Cambridge last week, watching her trying to keep the game under control, while tens of really active kids were jumping about.

Unable to keep my mouth shut as I am, I saw the goalie of one of the teams do something that, while very common at that age, is 'dangerous': he would make a save and then proceed to put the ball on the ground to kick it, as if it were a goal kick. Since the ball never went out of bounds, anybody from the other team could come and kick it in!

I approached the kid's coach at halftime and explained the rule to her. She replied “I can't tell him that; he doesn't speak a word in English. He's Portuguese...”

“Portuguese?”, I said, “I can speak Portuguese! Do you want me to tell him?”

My inner self could not believe what it was hearing. You know, I used to do my own comics when I was a kid, and one of my favourite characters was a superhero of dubious talent,  who flew backwards (something that I would see many years later on the 'Ren & Stimpy' cartoons) and looked suspiciously like me. His name was 'Supermoron'; enough said, right? Well, it seemed that I had turned into my alter ego again, because there I went, to talk to a kid I didn't know, in a language that I don't know, at a public park! Sad smile

I approached the kid and said to him the only three words in Portuguese I can say right:

- Você fala português?

He kinda nodded, so I gave him a 1-minute lecture on what to do with the ball, when he could put it on the ground and when he should throw it or do a drop kick. All in 'Portuguese', of course.

You should have seen the face of the poor child.

During the second half, the kid's sister got closer to him and asked him a couple of questions in perfect English, to which he replied as if he had also been born in Stafford-on-Avon.

in total disbelief, I told the girl “I thought he didn't speak any English! The coach told me...”

The big sister replied: “He does. We've been here for over a year now”

“From Portugal, right?” (It was the safest bet, the proportion of Portuguese speaking people is 5-1 vs Brazilians, if not more)

To my astonishment, she replied:

- Nope, we're Serbians.

I started to laugh, embarrassed:

- I've been talking to the poor kid in Portuguese, because of what the coach told me (no mention of my language skills, since my secret was now safe).

The girl tried to minimize the situation:

- Well, you know how it is in Cambridge... If you're speak with an accent here, you're either Portuguese or Newfie...

I came back to the field on Thursday (I'm writing this post while I'm at the same park). Caro has two games again.

I'm sitting on a bench, about 500 metres away from the closest field. :-)

Argentina

Comencé a reir, avergonzadísimo:
