This post really stinks

This one is going to be hard to translate!!! The idea of writing this post came up after a conversation I had with some colleagues during my trip to Brazil. First of all, I need to set the record straight: this conversation took place off-hours, while we were having dinner! I don’t remember how this topic came up, but I do recall we were talking about the alleged simplicity of the English language with regards to insulting other people. There are, I don’t know, six, seven bad words in English? Spanish, on the other hand, seems to be a much ‘richer’ language to me, at least in the area of my expertise, which is the Argentine slang (called lunfardo). Since my colleagues were from Brazil, Chile and Canada, I refrained from giving them any examples, but I did talk about this subject, which is this simple four letter word that in Argentine lunfardo becomes almost magic.

I’m talking about the word ‘fart’ (‘pedo’ in Spanish), if you excuse me.

The word ‘pedo’ is used by Argentines in many, many different situations and with varied meanings. At this point I’m willing to risk that its original meaning is among the least used! Since there is no better way to illustrate my point but citing examples, here I go as fast as I can (“on a fart”, we would say in Argentina). The translations will probably not make a lot of sense, unfortunately:

Phrase: Estar en pedo (To be in a fart)
Meaning: To be drunk
Example: “Here comes Julian, it looks like he’s in a fart”
Other ways to say it: The  one that translates the best would be “He’s got such a fart that he can’t see.”

Phrase: Ponerse en pedo (To get in a fart)
Meaning: To get drunk
Example: “At this pace, Esteban will get in a fart in 10 minutes”
Other ways to say it: To catch or grab a fart.

Phrase: En una nube de pedos (In a cloud of farts)
Meaning: To be an absent minded person
Example: “It’s always the same with Marito, he lives in a cloud of farts”

Phrase: De pedo (Off a fart)
Meaning: By chance, totally without intention and in spite of own incapacity or clumsiness
Example: “You can’t seriously say that he wanted to put the ball up there!! It’s obvious that your team’s goal was totally off a fart!!!”
Other ways to say it: Off a pure fart

Phrase: Un pedo líquido (A liquid fart)
Meaning: To be crazy, sh*t for brains.
Example: “Eduardo has a liquid fart in his head, how can he tell you that!!”

Phrase: Estar al pedo (To be at a fart)
Meaning: Doing nothing, farting around (ha!)
Example: “Always at a fart! When are you going to get a job?!”
Other ways to say it: Not having a fart to do.

Phrase: Tirarse un pedo (Throwing a fart)
Meaning: The intended meaning of the word: to fart
Example: “Oh, man, did you throw a fart?”
Other ways to say it: Rajarse (to rip) a fart, having a fart escape from yourself, etc.

Phrase: Ni en pedo (Not even in a fart)
Meaning: No way in hell, not in your lifetime.
Example: “Me? Go and talk to her?? Not even in a fart, dude!!”

Phrase: Pedorro (‘Farty’)
Meaning: Something bad, of poor quality. Crappy
Example: “What a ‘farty’ team we have this season!”
Other ways to say it: Pedorriento.

Phrase: Cagar a pedos (‘Crap with farts’)
Meaning: To verbally abuse somebody, generally from some authoritative position. To chastise
Example: “Leave me alone, I’m mad. My boss gave me hell today…”

Phrase: A los pedos (‘On a fart’)
Meaning: As I mentioned above, very fast
Example: “You know I call Coco and Pablo and they come over on a fart…”

Phrase: It lasted as much as a fart in a basket
Meaning: Well, this is the right usage of the word fart, but here it’s used to give an idea of a short period of time.
Example: “Me and my girlfriend fought again. We were OK, but that lasted the same as a fart in a basket…”
Other ways to say it: It lasted as much as a fart in a vase, an ashtray, etc.

That was tough!!! I know many of these phrases didn’t translate well, so I apologize. I just wanted to show you how colourful Argentines can be when using what used to be a bad word… :-)

Significado: Estar haciendo nada, holgazanear.
Ejemplo: “Siempre al pedo vos, eh? Cuándo vas a trabajar?”

Frase: Cagar a pedos
Significado: Retar a alguien, por lo general desde una posición de autoridad.
Ejemplo: “Dejame, estoy caliente. Mi jefe me re-cagó a pedos…”

  8. Similarly, French use the variant of "merde" (shit) a lot.

For instance, you job is "emmerdant" (shits you up). Something "chiant" (that makes you shit) is somehting boring. "Fais chier" means literally "it makes me shit", means it's a bore. Etc.

  9. hahaha I knew most of these, but I did learn a few new ones. I'm personally a fan of "ni en pedo," and whenever I say it, Daniel's family laughs and comments about how "argentinizada" I've become. ;)
