Embarrassing moments

 

Hey there! Long time no see… As you probably heard, me and Santi (OK, mostly Santi) own a soccer club named FC Berlin, which has teams competing both at the local, district and provincial level here in Canada, but also at a semi-professional level in the US. In this last case, every home game involves a lot of tasks and activities that are not common at the amateur level, and which include ticket sales, full stats, announcements, live broadcasting and play-by-play commentary.

 

With me playing the jack of all trades role most of the times, I have performed each and every one of the tasks mentioned above, though I have to say that I enjoyed the stats and the play-by-play part the most. But on this particular May afternoon, I had to add one new skill to my vast array

As we were getting ready for one of our women’s league games in Buffalo, NY [our women’s squad plays in the United Women’s Soccer league (UWS)] we realized that the sound system was not working properly that particular day. This would prevent us from not only doing the announcements but also from another key event before the kick off time: the playing of the USA and Canadian National Anthems.

What to do? Well, there was not a lot of time to think of options so I quickly grabbed my iPad, googled ‘Star Spangled Banner’, went out to the balcony, and mentally looked for a starting note that would allow me to sing the ‘the land of the free’ line at the end without embarrassing myself. I waited patiently for the teams to walk on the field, and after the corresponding announcements, it was my turn to say ‘Please rise if able and remove your hats for the playing of the national anthems’.

 

I stood up there, and tablet  in hand, I belted out the US National Anthem. I gotta say, I did it like a champion. It took everybody by surprise, and soon players, referees and spectators started to turn around and look up to find out where the music was coming from. I was so proud… it was my very first time singing it, and I thought I had done a great job!

Once I finished, it was time for me to sing ‘O Canada’, which of course I had performed countless times before.

And THAT is the one I screwed up. And it’s on YouTube. Holy crap, man…

 

 

Hola! Tanto tiempo… Como seguramente oyeron, Santi y yo (bueno, más que nada Santi) somos dueños de un club de fútbol llamado FC Berlin, que tiene equipos compitiendo tanto a nivel local, regional y provincial aquí en Canadá, como así también a nivel semi-profesional en USA. En este último caso, cada partido que jugamos de local requiere muchas tareas y responsabilidades no tan comunes a nivel amateur, y que incluyen venta de entradas, anuncios, estadísticas, transmisión en vivo y relatos y comentarios.

 

Como yo siempre por lo general hago de ‘comodín’, he tenido que ponerme a cargo de cada una de esas tareas en algún moment, aunque debo decir que disfruto de las estadísticas y los relatos más que del resto. Pero en este día de Mayo articular, tuve que agregar una nueva herramienta a micinturón.

Mientras nos preparábamos para uno de nuestros partidos del equipo de mujeres en Buffalo, NY [nuestro equipo femenino juega en la United Women’s Soccer league (UWS)] descubrimos que el sistema de sonido no estaba funcionado bien ese día. Esto no nos iba a dejar hacer los anuncios (formaciones, etc), pero tampoco otra cosa que es una importante tradición antes de que arranque el partido: pasar los himnos nacionales de EEUU y Canadá.

Qué podíamos hacer? Bueno, no había mucho tiempo para pensar en opciones así que rápidamente tomé mi iPad, googlé ‘Star Spangled Banner’ (el himno americano), salí al balcón y busqué mentalmente una nota para empezar que me permitiera cantar la línea que dice ‘the land of the free’ al final, sin pasar vergüenza. Esperé pacientemnete a que los equipos entraran al campo de juego, y luego de los anuncios correspondientes, fue mi turno de decir ‘Por favor, pónganse de pie si es posible y remuevan sus gorras para escuchar las estrofas de los himnos nacionales’.

 

Me paré ahí, con el tablet en la mano, y me largué a cantar el himno nacional de los Estados Unidos. Debo decir que lo saqué como un campeón. Tomé a todos por sorpresa, y pronto jugadores, árbitros y espectadores comenzaron a mirar hacia arriba para ver de dónde venía la música. Estaba tan orgulloso… era mi primera vez cantando ese himno y lo había hecho muy bien!

Una vez que terminé, pasé a interpretar ‘O Canada’, el que por supuesto he hecho montones de veces ya.

Y ESE fue el himno en que me equivoqué la letra. Y está en YouTube. Dios mío…
