C-Walk

Canada(Information from a Facebook group)

The Clown Walk (also known as the C-Walk) refers to a modern dance style, usually done to hip hop music. It is a variation of the Crip walk, a gang related dance. Clown walking, however, was created to distance the relationship between the dance style and the Crips gang. Another variation of Clown Walking is Crown walking, which focuses mostly on flow rather than speed and flash.

The Clown style is a fast moving, flashy style that many walkers in the C-Walk community prefer. Though it does not focus on precision or a clean walk, it does impress with its speed and flash. This style allows for people to create any moves they wish and incorporate it into their walk, hence why it is so popular. Popular and underground artists like Swollen Members, Cormega, Busta Rhymes, Natz Da Pinoy Rapper (aka Natz Blazin'), Coolio and more make excellent Clown Walk songs.

The most basic moves of clown walking are: The V, Shuffle, Heel-toe and X-hop. You can combine and derive these moves and that’s how you end with concepts like V-stepback, Shuffle kick, snake heel toe or things like that. Many other moves come from the world of hip-hop and some even like to slide, glide, moonwalk, etc.

Santi has been really into this C-Walk thing for the last few months. Every time I pick up a camera at home I find six or seven of these videos Santi seems to shoot everywhere, always with the same premise: they’re either shot from afar or from the waist down if they’re close. I guess the idea is that not only you focus on the legs movements but also you don’t see the c-walker’s face. On top of all the videos he shoots, he spends countless hours editing on his computer. I’m fine with that, because he’s learning a lot of something he’s really interested after all. I'd rather have him dancing or in front of the computer than, you know, doing other kind of stuff they’re exposed to at this age.

Me being his Dad, though, –and an evil one!– I have been given Santi a hard time about this and I even posted one of his videos, only that I played it at 2x the speed and chose a different (and terrible) song. But the truth is that Santi seems really good at this, which you can verify by watching the video below, which I believe it’s the best Santi has produced until now. Please note that the second guy is more of a break dancer than a c-walker… but he’s really good! :-)

  4. Wow! Very impressive footwork. I kinda hope my kids get into something like this. Really cool.

I totally agree I would rather see kids out doing something like this than holed up all day playing video games for hours on end. Around here the skateboarders get a bad rap but I think it is cool how long and hard they work to perfect their tricks.

  6. Shannon, thanks for commenting again! I agree with you as well; skaters have the same bad image here, but again, as long as they're practising... they're outside and they're exercising, what's not to like!

  16. I liked watching those dance moves and Santi did a really good job editing to make that video. I wish I was more technically inclined so I could do little videos and similar things but sadly, I am not.

  18. I am not sure if the question has been asked or answered, but is there any chance that you will be busting a move like Santi? I told my wife (Shannon from above)that I would like to have some moves like that and she just laughed at me.

I loved watching this video and the ones Santi has on his site. He is very good.
