Live from… Detroit, Michigan

USAWhat a great day I’m having! I had a 6:15 AM flight from Kitchener-Waterloo to Detroit today, and then another one from here to Atlanta (Georgia), where I would finally take my last flight to Wichita, Kansas (my final destination and where I will stay for 10 days).

I was very worried that the cab taking me to the airport wouldn’t find my house (because there are many streets with the same or similar name in the region), so I gave them very detailed directions last night, and went to bed thinking that they were going to be home at 5:30 (the airport is just 10 minutes away). Big mistake.

The cab didn’t arrive until 5:45 AM. Somebody (?) had questioned my directions and gave the driver different ones, I could see everything on the screen he has. I finally got to the airport at 6:00 AM and guess what… I missed the plane. Well, technically, the plane was still there, and it didn’t take off until 6:42 AM, but I just couldn’t board it, because ‘the flight is closed’. Desperate, I went to ask when would be the next one I could take, and I got this: 11:50 AM to Detroit, then a direct flight to Wichita at… 7:20 PM. Yes, I waited for five hours in Kitchener, and I will have to wait for another six here. But that’s not all!

I called the taxi company to tell them that I had missed my flight thanks to them, and to my surprise, the lady on the phone told me this: First of all, you should have planned this better and asked your cab to pick you up earlier; secondly, you should have given us your address correctly, because you live in Kitchener, not Waterloo”. I just could not believe my ears. All I got to reply was: “Lady, do not tell me where I live, because I’m pretty sure; if I were wrong, then I have been voting for the wrong guys for the last five years! And do not tell me how to do my business, because it’s clearly you who needs some help”. Then I demanded to speak to the manager, who finally called me at noon and was very, very apologetic.

After a very bumpy ride (I got sick and everything) I landed in Detroit and was –of course– randomly selected to go through a more detailed search. I had to take off my shoes and belt, empty my pockets, and then stand in a closed cabin where the security people were taking x-rays of me.

It’s 2:30 PM now, which means I still have 4:30 hours to kill in here. What to do, this has been such a fantastic day so far! At least the Detroit Airport is beautiful, has free internet and you know what? It has some interesting things I could photograph. I don’t think there is anyway my day can get any worse, so let’s make it better!

  3. Sorry about your day, hopefully it ends better than it started! I heard a lot about Detroit lately (foreclosure, empty city, $5000 houses that no one wants to buy...), must be weird. The woman was way out of line, you were right!!!I read your answer about my question on Islas Malvinas, couldn't comment on that post for some reason (prob. my bad connexion), but thank you for clearing up the subject for me.

  7. I could go on and on about the taxi problems that we have had in this region! We waited for a taxi (in Feb, it was about -20) with our groceries for 55 minutes - standing outside the whole time. I called the company about 5 times and each time they had a different excuse. They even sent a cab to MY HOUSE once instead of the store where we were waiting! They told me that I had asked for the cab to be sent to my house.... I hope that the rest of your day improved from there! Never say that things can't worse! The universe might hear you :)

  8. The problems I have with the taxis in Singapore seem so minor compared to yours. I'm thankful for taxis.
