This is my choir

CanadaAs I was saying, even with the big snow storm and everything (today’s part 3 of ‘snow-mageddon’), we were still able to perform on Sunday. We did Part One of Handel’s “Messiah” with my church choir, and I have to say, we did a very good job. We were joined by a string quintet, led by our Director of Music, Daniel Zondervan, on violin (I don’t know how he managed to play and conduct at the same time, but boy did he do a good job!).

I had a bass solo, the recitative "Thus saith the Lord", and I was quite pleased with my own performance, which doesn't happen often! Santi taped the whole service, but he ran out of memory almost at the end and accidentally erased everything while trying to make some room, so we only have the last three movements and then the "Hallelujah" chorus...

Daniel told an interesting story about this particular piece, saying that the tradition of standing up whenever this is played comes from its very first performance; King George II rose to his feet with the first notes of this chorus. Since royal protocol has always required that everybody has to get up in the presence of royalty out of respect, the whole audience stood as well. I went to Wikipedia (where else!) to investigate a little more on why did King George II get up, and here are the most popular explanations:
  • As was and is the custom, one stands in the presence of royalty as a sign of respect. The Hallelujah chorus clearly places Christ as the King of Kings. In standing, King George II accepts that he too is subject to Lord of Lords.
  • He was so moved by the performance that he rose to his feet.
  • He arrived late to the performance, and the crowd rose when he finally made an appearance.
  • His gout acted up at that precise moment and he rose to relieve the discomfort.
  • After an hour of musical performance, he needed to stretch his legs.
Fun, isn't it? Fortunately, and going back to the recording, not all is lost, because even though Santi erased my solo (poor guy), I know that Trinity records every service on CD, so I will still get the chance to listen to myself. If it's any good, I will share it too! :-)

Divertido, no? :-)
