PhotoHunt #19 - Wide

Canada
I struggled a little trying to think of anything I have that might fit under today’s theme, “wide”. What could I use? A picture of myself? :-)
In the end, I decided to go with what you can see below.

The “Avenida 9 de Julio” (Avenue 9th of July) honours Argentina’s Independence Day (09/Jul/1816) and runs between the neighbourhoods of Constitución and Retiro, in downtown Buenos Aires. It has always been referred as ‘the widest avenue in the world’, mostly by… people from Buenos Aires, so you know it’s true!  ;-)

One thing is true, though; it’s about 150 m wide, and it normally takes you two or three traffic lights to walk across it (hence those little boulevards). When I was a kid, I lived on Cerrito St, which is the street flanking 9 de Julio to the north. The avenue was still under construction (i.e. they still were demolishing some buildings), and there was a wider boulevard just in front of our apartment, where me and my brother Martín would play soccer almost every afternoon. Every time the ball went off and into the street, we would spend seconds praying that no cars would run over it, and then minutes getting the ball back… :-)

Argentina

A blast from the past: Martín and I (both in the front row with the striped jerseys), along with our soccer friends and Daniel (Paco’s father).
We were playing in the boulevard I mentioned above, and this picture was taken just after the World Cup in 1978 (hence the soccer jerseys)

Ruben Peucelle 1973This one is dedicated to my Argentine readers, though some in other Latin American countries will know who he is: The legendary Argentine wrestler Rubén Peucelle.
He was the Champion of Argentina in the “Titanes en el Ring” promotion, and his nickname was… “el ancho” (“the wide one”)
