50/50

UKThere are many extra activities going on at work, like for example the Operation Christmas Child we were part of last Friday, or the United Way events. In the past few years, I was part of the committee that ran the United Way drives and extra fundraising events. Last year, for example, I had promised I was going to dye my hair bright red if we raised $10,000 (and then pink, blue, fluo green and fluo orange for $11K, $12K, $13K and $14K, respectively). I was lucky because we ended just below 10K (I mean, we barely missed it!), but I still participated in other events like the fundraising barbeque (I’m from Argentina, so I’m expected to flip burgers whenever there is a company BBQ, and to be honest, I love it).

Another thing we normally do is a 50/50 raffle. The premise is simple: you buy tickets, and all the money goes to a pot. Half of that money is taken for whatever cause we’re doing the fundraising and the other half goes to the winner. I have taken part of draws like this and –of course- I never won anything.

About a month ago, I was getting ready to leave to Cornwall (it was a Thursday afternoon), when a couple of girls from HR came to my desk selling 50/50 tickets. But I’m leaving in about 15 minutes, and who knows when I’ll be back!”, I whined, trying to get away with not buying any. But they were convincing and I ended buying the smallest package: 3 tickets for $5.

Put them in a notebook, packed and left. Once I was in Cornwall, I got the e-mail announcing the winner, and I couldn’t even remember where my 3 tickets were. Even knowing that my chances of winning were slim to none, I didn’t delete the e-mail and even joked about it with the people at the hospital: Once I get back to the office and find the ticket, I will just go and collect the prize; don’t you see they haven’t announced the winner yet?”.

I did find the tickets about two weeks after I came back. Brought up that e-mail and compared them. I’m $106 richer now, thank you very much. ;-)

I know it looks like 0879337 in the ticket, but it’s just a bad picture. Believe me, I won. Look at the picture below!

Isn’t that funny? I won a 50/50, and they gave me two 50’s!
No es gracioso? Gané el 50/50 y me dieron dos 50’s!
