Alone with four kids - Days 11 to 15

CanadaWell, we're finally back from our trip to the beautiful Skootamatta Lake. We were invited by our friends David and Myrta, and even though we got there much later than we had planned, we still had a lot of fun.

Skootamatta Lake is in what is called Land o' Lakes in Eastern Ontario; it's near a small town called Cloyne, and very close to the Bon Echo Provincial Park. It's about 180Km SW from Ottawa, the capital of Canada. The lakeshore features several cottages (some old, some brand new) and a few houses that indicate that there's people living there all year round, like Carolyn (David's sister) who offered her place for me and the kids to sleep (and what a beautiful house she had!).

As I said above, we got in there later than expected, but still with plenty of time to enjoy the afternoon. The kids went inside and changed their clothes as soon as they could. A few moments later... splash! They were jumping into the lake like we see in the movies. Even I did it!

An hour later or so, David asked the guys if they would like to go for a ride in his boat. The answer was 'yes!', of course. But he had a surprise in store for them... they weren't going to be on the boat, but rather on a big inflatable raft that we were going to tow around. They had the time of their lives; Juan was the first to be ejected and sent into the water, then Carolina (though she managed to grab the handle) and finally Santi. Florencia and I were watching (and taking pictures) from the boat.

We had dinner, and then the little ones watched a movie, but not before they lighted a campfire for marshmallows and S'mores. They could only watch about 45 minutes of the movie, so tired everybody was (and it was a funny one!). David and Myrta's grandchildren were staying too, so there was little room in their cottage. Due to that, Carolyn (David's sister) and her husband Gordon offered us to stay with them. As I was saying before, they have a beautiful, huge house by the lake, not far away from David's cottage. The kids loved it, especially since -unlike David's- this one had TV! :-)

We all took showers (the guest showers were outside, like in most cottages) and then everybody went to bed. We watched 'Pirates of the Caribbean' on my laptop, but once again, everybody was too tired to watch the entire movie. Flor went down first, then Santi and in the end, the other two decided to go to bed too.

We got up really early on Wednesday, because we wanted to watch the Canada-Argentina game (women's soccer from the Olympics). Canada won 2-1, and I didn't get to see any of the goals (the kids did). After a very nutritious breakfast (pancakes, cereal, fruit, etc), we all headed back to David and Myrta's place, where I dedicated the morning to fix the fishing poles they had; they were all about to be thrown away and I managed to salvage them all, so the kids were really excited. We made a quick run to the town to buy some fishing gear and worms, and then I took everybody (my four kids, plus David's grandchildren and another little girl) to go fishing. It was a big success, since everybody caught a lot of little ones. Well, everybody but Juan, who was a little upset about it. To make things even worse, he stepped on a rake and got a nasty puncture wound on his foot, which bled a lot (and scared him big time). It definitely wasn't his day... luckily, the owner of the house where Juan had his accident was a nurse, so she took care of him. I later put my First Aid knowledge into practice by keeping the wound clean and putting new bandage. After today's inspection, he's doing well, and he's even walking now.

We went out fishing again after lunch, but to my kids' surprise, David offered us the boat so we would go alone. Santi had drive one before (last year in Widgawa), so we both went through the instructions and then set out to sail. Santi drove first, and then I took it back to the dock. Not only we didn't get a single nibble, we were virtually eaten alive by mosquitos and deer flies. Especially me! It's like those buggers saw me and thought: 'Wow! They opened an 'All-you-can-eat' in here!'. To make things even worse, it started to rain just when we were the farthest away from the land. We got soaked!

We went back inside and doused ourselves in bug repellent; then, once it stopped raining, we went out fishing again.Again we caught nothing, and again we were just devoured by the bugs. Evidently, they just didn't care. Just before we ate, the kids went fishing again, and Juan finally caught his first fish (and then some more).

After dinner, we went back to Carol's place to take a shower and then go back to finish watching the movie with the kids. We were so exhausted that the impossible happened: I fell asleep on the couch and woke up at around 9:00 PM, dazed and confused. So did Juan, by the way, and maybe somebody else. We then got a call from David, saying that all the other kids were equally exhausted, so there was no movie that night. Well, actually we did finish watching "Pirates of the Caribbean" in our room, but Florencia fell asleep once again.

After a late breakfast, we finally left Lake Skootamatta at around 11:00 AM on Thursday, and got back home at 4:30 PM after a trip in which we saw one of the worst rainfalls I remember. To make things even worse, it caught us while I was at the service area with Santi, buying lunch. The car was about 200 m away from there, so we had to wait until the rain died down a little and then made the run to the car, where my little birds where crying of hunger, while they were opening their mouths as big as they could. :-)

An hour and a half after we got home, we had to leave again, this time to London, where Santi played last night (they lost 0-5, but Santi played very well nevertheless). We got back home at 1:30 AM, and nobody moved until almost noon today.

I'm now at Northfield Park, watching Carolina's soccer practice while the kids are running around. They found a lot of paint balls, probably from a paintball war that took place a few days ago. They have found 38 so far, and I fear they will want to use them eventually. Expect pictures of my house all decorated in pink and purple.

Hey, at least those are Flor's favourite colours.

Argentina

Especialmente a mí!
