My darkest secret

(This post was inspired by my answer to one of the questions of my last "Friday's Feast")

CanadaI was five or six years old when this happened, and I hadn't told such terrible secret until today. I remember that I was still living in the house on 70 street, close to the school (the "Colegio Alemán", where I did Grades 1, 4 and 5).

I must confess: I had an old newspaper hidden behind the fireplace. Inside, there was an article about a Dutch teacher who had died climbing the Aconcagua mountain in Mendoza (also Argentina). It was something 'normal' considering the circumstances, but I was absolutely terrified by it, because she was frozen when they found her, and I don't know why I kept imagining a mummified and even disfigured corpse.

The day I read that article in the "Ecos Diarios" for the first time, I made a ball with the newspaper and threw it inside the fireplace. A few days later, I took it out and straightened it. After that, I would come back every few days and take it out to read it once more, only to got scared again and put it back where it was before running away. Kid's stuff… Even if the fireplace was being used (because we did use it during the Winter), the newspaper wouldn't get burnt.

Who knows, maybe I can go back home in the future, and take my kids to show them the house in which I used to live. I can even imagine the owner's face when I tell them: “Would you let me come in? I grew up here and I don't remember much”.

Then –of course!- I will go straight to the fireplace to see if I can find that Ecos Diarios from 1972 or 1973 still hidden. Any doubts that I would do that?

Yo crecí aquí y no me acuerdo mucho”.
