Trying to get better at this blogging thing

(En español más abajo)

CanadaThis month has been on of the best in the last year or two in terms of visits and page views. Not spectacular, though, and I still fail to engage people enough in order to get them to comment again, but well, it’s still an improvement. I still enjoy blogging, and I will continue to do this until I just don’t anymore. I’m getting close to 10 years on this platform alone! (My first LfW post was on June 1st, 2006, if I’m not mistaken).

I have a few ideas, a few posts that I have already queue up… I wonder what else I could do here. Do you have any suggestions? As long as they’re not like ‘show me a picture of your belly before and after’, I will consider them! Smile

Smile

200,000 visitors

(En español más abajo)

USASomebody who connected from Loxley, Alabama (in the US) has just become my 200,000th visitor (at least since I began counting back in 2007).
The funny thing is that he landed here looking for information or pictures about narwhals. Google, by sending that poor person to my blog, has proved that I don’t have to change the heading of this blog. I continue to disappoint readers! :-)

Even though I have become way less prolific than what I used to be (especially before I was hacked in 2012), I still appreciate you guys dropping by. I hope I disappoint you a little less in the future.

THANK YOU

lfw_200000

GRACIAS

Bouncing back

(En español más abajo)

CanadaI used to do this a lot, because I love stats. But I have to be honest, I didn’t pay attention to my daily / monthly visits or the number of comments in 2012. I just knew that my blog wasn’t the same anymore, and I considered shutting it down for good several times (I even stopped blogging for a couple of weeks during the summer). Then I realized that what I had to do was to go back to what I felt the most comfortable doing: writing about whatever I wanted to write, in my own style, and for my own pleasure. What would be the point of me trying to attract ‘audience’ or to spend hours trying to find topics that ‘potential readers’ would be interested in?

I am what I am. I’m a husband, a dad, an IT nerd professional and a soccer coach. I can’t even say “I’m a singer” anymore, I haven’t sung for months (I’m certainly not in the mood to sing today). I’m not an example of anything or a person interesting enough for my stories to be extremely popular, and why should that concern me? True, my blog hasn’t been the same in terms of popularity, productivity and (ouch) quality since I was hacked almost two years ago. I roughly receive 1/3 of the traffic I used to back then. But even that provided me with a good opportunity to learn; I learn about internet security and safety first, and then I learned that I had a lot of family, blog buddies, acquaintances and friends that care about me. And that felt great. Now the person that was behind the hacking of my blog, my mail, my Youtube, etc. ended being accused (by a member of his own family) of the same crimes he try to accuse me of, which proves that karma is a bitch. I just hope he got to spend just one night in jail because of that. Just one.

But I digress. The point is that I started 2013 by writing about whatever I wanted to write and it seems to have paid off. I’m happier with my blog and it even seems like people perceive that too. I will continue doing what I like to do, and my blog will hopefully go back to what it used to be.

And if you like what you’re seeing? Well, even better then! :-)

Argentina

It finally happened

(En español más abajo)

CanadaExactly a year ago, my blog was at its peak in terms of popularity. I had averages of 140/150 visits per day and many friends and blog buddies would come to leave their comments very often -or just to heckle me! :-)

Then my blog was hacked, and it was very hard to come back. In fact, the main reason I did return and continued blogging was the overwhelming support I received from the same friends and blog buddies who had been reading my blog until then (plus, of course, those who have been with me always, regardless of whether they ‘read me’ or not). I did come back, but my blog would never be the same. My mood was a big factor here too. I struggled a lot to keep it floating and I even managed to get near to an average of 100 visits per day during the summer. But after that, it was another free fall.

I love stats, and my numbers right now are horrific. I guess it’s a combination of me not writing at the crazy pace I used to, a decrease in the quality of what I write, and the fact that I’m not as active as I used to be. I’m not complaining about the results, it’s something you can expect.

But when I resumed my blogging last week, I had a goal: I want to bring LfW back to life. I know it’s going to cost me dearly, but I also know that I can do it. One of the short term goals I self imposed were to make it to 100 visitors for one day. I had to be patient… but it finally happened!

image
The next short term goal is ‘write something that actually has some value’, of course. We’ll see how I do with that… :-)

Argentina

150,000!

(En español más abajo)
CanadaIt finally happened. Somebody from Buenos Aires, Argentina, has just become my visitor number 150,000 (since I started counting, back in Oct/2007). This person arrived to my blog through “Inmigrantes Canadá” the portal created by Guillermo Ziegler and Bruno Marge, a constant source of visitors for this humble blog.

Thank you so very much!!! I still cannot believe this. What a great way to celebrate LfW’s first five years (it was exactly a week ago)

Aún no puedo creerlo.

Dropping off the radar

(En español más abajo)

CanadaIt’s been almost two months since my blog was deleted by an imbecile who might still call himself a journalist just because he works for a website in my hometown Necochea that is not only famous for stealing posts and pictures from important newspapers and newsportals without giving any proper credit, but also for its diatribe in favour of the return of the ‘iron fist’ to Argentina, this meaning the Military Forces taking over and ruling the country once again (something that it’s easy to see when you look at the very few articles they actually write themselves and the commentary they welcome).

Though I was able to bring all of my posts back, thanks to the backups I had taken,  there was a problem: Blogger wouldn’t respect their original URL for whatever reason, adding instead a couple of digits after an underscore. This caused, for example, my ‘Coming to Canada’ post to go from ‘coming-to-canada-part-1.html’ to ‘coming-to-canada-part-1_8418.html’.

This seems like a minor inconvenience, but had devastating effects for my blog. In a matter of days, I went from my then usual couple hundred visits a day to 60 or 70. The reason? Google is still sending everybody to my own URLs. So, when I go and look for stats for this blog, I see that I have a 66% or so of dead links. Blogger (owned by Google, by the way), doesn’t redirect those who click on an old link, and it doesn’t provide me with a ‘404’ page, so I can actually tell people where to look for what they want to read. Instead, they see this:

image

It’s very discouraging. I’ve contacted Google several times, asking them to rescan my blog so they start showing the correct URLs, but I haven’t received any responses. It’s gotten even worse in the last few days, as I’m now averaging less than 50 visits. I had 47 yesterday, and that with me having a ‘Wordless Wednesday’ post, which guarantees a good number of visitors. I have received just 12 visitors in the last 15 hours, and none between 12:30 AM and 8:30 AM today.

I know I keep saying I write this for myself, but it bothers me and it frustrates me that almost nobody can find the posts I have written throughout the last four (almost five) years.

All this, combined with my own presence of mind these days, is pushing me towards making the decision of closing ‘Live from Waterloo’ for good. Many have told me not to, including my own wife, but I just can’t find the energy. I have a list of no less than 30 posts that are either planned, half way written or ready to be published, but I can’t get myself to do that. Especially if they’re funny.

Maybe I should take a break and wait until I’m in a better mood. It won’t happen soon, though. We’ll see…

Argentina

No tuve respuesta.

I’m being spied by robots

(En español más abajo)

CanadaIt’s been a while since I last published any stats for this blog, but that doesn’t mean I’m not keeping track anymore! :-) I will soon publish an update on my Top Commentator race, for example.

One thing I have noticed lately is that I’m getting an average of 140, 150 visits per day, which is not bad at all considering that I hadn’t been posting that often during the summer. My subscriptions through FeedBurner and Facebook have also gone up and with the many websites that feature or reproduce my feed, I could say that my blog is read by at least 500 people every day, which is incredible.

Whenever I went to check just my Sitemeter stats, though, I would find an insane number of page views and I couldn’t figure out who would be so interested in my previous posts (or more importantly, why). It remained a mystery until I actually found the culprit. It’s Google!

image
According to Wikipedia, googlebot is “the search bot software used by Google, which collects documents from the web to build a searchable index for the Google search engine”. I think it’s cool Google found me and is interested in the contents of my blog. I read it just takes up a lot of bandwidth, though, but I shouldn’t have to worry about that.

This might be the reason why my pages sometimes rank up high in the Google searches, which causes some old posts to get high Page Ranks (there was one that had a 10!). I started this blog as a personal diary, and a way to share pictures with my family, and never expected it to grow to what it is today. I’d lie if I said that I don’t like more and more people coming to read it, but it’s not that I make a conscientious effort to generate more readers.

So any help I get for free is appreciated. Even if it is from Google. :0)

Argentina

100,000!!!

(En español más abajo)

CanadaWell, it finally happened, but that doesn’t mean that I actually can believe it. This blog has received its 100,000th visitor (since I started counting, back in Oct/2007) at around 1:00 AM today. It’s somebody that seems to be from Philadelphia, PA, but it also says that he/she has Spanish(Argentina) settings. So… could it be Katie? I guess she will confirm or deny this.

In the meantime, THANK YOU for visiting this blog, whether you do it occasionally, periodically, weekly, daily or hourly. I just cannot believe this, I celebrated the 90,000 visits back in late January!

Since I’m already here, and the first quarter has just finished, check some blog stats, including Top Commentators, at the end of this post.

90,000!

(En español más abajo)

CanadaThis is going faster than what I thought.
Somebody heralding from Oakland, California, became my 90,000th visitor (since I started counting) this morning. I don’t think it’s a recurring visitor, especially considering the page where that person landed! :-)

I’m quite impressed with the traffic my blog has been receiving since last October. I thought it was going to go down after the Holidays, but it’s still up there.

image

Who will be my 100,000th visitor? Should I come up with some prize for he/she? I will think about it.

Top Commentators - 2009

image
I saw this receipt at Mercedes' blog,
who in turn got it from www.customreceipt.com

CanadaWell, the year is over, and so is the race!!!

As I was predicting, the last three months were the best of the year in terms of visits and page views. This is in part due to the growing interest my blog caused this year, but mostly to the big success that my posts about the Santa Claus parades are. This year’s attracted 783 people, compared to the exactly 700 from 2008. They became my third and fourth most popular post ever, relegating “Coming to Canada” to the fifth place! In case you’re interested, my most popular post ever is my report on Ace Frehley’s concert in Toronto, with over 1,100 views.

I ended the year with an average of 141 visits per day, which is  a 22% increase from Dec/2008. Even more, November 2009 was the best month ever for this blog, with over 175 visits per day on average. My blog is still growing, in spite of me thinking that I’m running out of ideas…

The number of subscribers is now just above 200 on average, according to Feedburner, which is a great thing. The other interesting information comes from the list of referrals: Entrecard took #1, followed by  Wordless Wednesday, Networkedblogs (Facebook), Jackie’s Casi en serio and “El 22 en Canadá”.

Now onto the competition. JorMig was definitely the 2009 champion, with 399 comments. At a rate than more than one comment per day, Jorge proved that either he has no taste, or he has no life. :-) The Top 5 was completed by the usual suspects: Mike, my brother El Fafa, Lorena and Ale Betoño. There were many, and very good new commentators in 2009, and some have already made it to the top of this list, so here’s my recognition to people like Katie, Vir and Sukhmandir Kaur.

Technorati has changed the way they measure authority, so after almost a year of a declining performance that took me from over 100 to 14, I now have an authority of over 430. I don’t really know how this works, and many have expressed their unhappiness about the ranks are done now, so I will just stay put and see what the trend is this time…

What else? Oh, yeah. I was nominated again for a couple of Canadian Blog Awards, but failed miserably. I didn’t even make it to the second round, so when I was asked to help coming up with the badges for the 2009 edition, I made this one just for me:

Loser_2009 Nice, huh?

Now I’m nominated for another award, and this one will run all year! I’m talking about the Canadian Weblog Awards. You can see the button on the left panel… I like this a lot, because not only it allows my blog to be seen by other Canadian bloggers, it gives me the chance to get to know fantastic blogs all over this country, which is how I ended knowing some of what have now become my blogbuddies!

Well, this is all for now. Just wanted to thank you once again for being there and reading this thing. Hopefully, 2010 will bring some inspiration and this blog will finally have some meaning! :-)))

Argentina
