Up in the air

USA

I'm back to travelling for business after a year long break, and though it hasn't been too bad so far, it took time for me to get used to this life again. Many have misconceptions about frequent travellers; they see them (us) as people living glamorous, interesting lives; I don't know how it is in other people's cases, but I can safely say that my life is far from glamorous and definitely not that interesting.

I spend a lot of time at airports, right. What do you do at an airport? Well, you check in, hoping your suitcase won't weight 50.1 lb because if not you will have to open it in front of everybody. Then you go through customs, where you not only have to open your carry on luggage and put everything on little plastic bins, but also have to empty your pockets, take off your glasses, watch, shoes and belt.

You wait, barefoot and grabbing your pants so they won't fall down, to go through the gate. Sometimes you get 'randomly selected' because of your last name, appearance or colour of your skin, and you 'win' the chance to go through more detailed security. They make you stand inside of what looks like a giant washing machine, where your naked body will be observed by an amused security guard. Remember the Silver Surfer from the Fantastic 4 movie? That is pretty much how you'll look. If you're really 'lucky', they might even pat you down!

Now is when the fun begins. You can do many things while you wait for your flight to begin boarding. You can shop at incredibly high prices, for example. Are you hungry? Well, there are many places where you can order very pricey, but still crappy food. If you don't want to do any, you can fight other flyers to the death for access to one of the four or five power outlets still available, so you can charge your laptop and watch a movie.

Make sure you use the washrooms. They're incredibly clean, totally odourless, well maintained and you can enjoy the works of many unknown international artists just by looking at the walls.

You will notice that they have started to board your flight, because everybody will jump out of their seats and try to get in the plane at the same time. They will call for first class passenger first, then passengers with children and elderly people, and finally passengers on zones 1 to 5. It doesn't matter; everybody will line up at the same time. It's a really wonderful sight!

Depending on your length of your trip, you might get a nice plane, a smaller one, or those incredibly loud propellers that are barely bigger than a school bus with wings. If this is the case, then you might even to check in your carry on at the gate, because there is no room in the overhead compartments. This means you have to wait for your luggage twice once you land!

Once you finally reach your destination and reunite with your luggage (what a beautiful moment), you can finally make your way through a sea of shady people offering you taxi or limo services and then finally get out of such a wonderful place. If you're lucky like me, you will probably have to stay for 5 hours waiting for your connecting flight. Grab your laptop and watch a couple of movies; the seats in front of the gate are so comfortable that you won't believe it! (Actually, don't believe it). Then you board your next flight and it starts all over again.

In summary, life at the airport is exciting, glamorous and full of amazing stuff. But wait until I tell you about the hotels!

  1. Oh yes so much fun! The only thing better is doing this with 4 tired and whiney kids in a country where you don't speak the language. Truly joyous! And as lovely as the airport toilets are the ones are the plane are even worse!

  3. You forgot to mention the delightful wait on the taxiway, where no matter how many planes take off before you do, your pilot assures you are 3rd in line.

And the people who are so overjoyed that the plane has touched earth again, that they immediately jump up and begin retrieving their belongings from overhead bins (whacking other passengers on the head) while the plane is still in motion.
