Apocalypse now

(En español más abajo)

CanadaNote: It’s hard for me to come over here and try to be funny while we’re going through so much grief, but I guess that what my beloved sister-in-law Florencia would have wanted is for us to keep going and pull through. It’s hard –so very hard – but we will do it. For her, for her family, for my brother and for that beautiful niece I have. I have this and a couple more posts that were written a few days ago and should come up in the next few days. Please understand my internet absence.

I’m very well known –unfortunately- for my bad eating habits. Since I was a kid, I haven’t been exactly best friends with fruits, to the point that I can only eat bananas and occasionally, some berries. The same happens with vegetables: while I like the starchy ones and I love legumes, I just despise everything that goes in a salad, beginning with the –to me- horribly smelling Ranch dressing. Ew!

I went on to say (jokingly) that I only recognize two main food groups:
  1. Food you chase
  2. Food you fry

Unfortunately, that’s not too far from the truth; still, in the spirit of getting in a better shape (and also due to some recent health issues I have been having), I decided not too long ago to start taking better care of myself and try to eat healthier. What an incredibly difficult task is proving to be!

The results, however, are amazing. I have lost a little over 10 lb in the last couple of months, and I feel much better overall. My blood sugar, that was really high a few weeks ago, is now well between normal values. The only pending assignment is exercising, but I will tackle on that as well.

Now the problem is that I never told the kids I was going to do this. So imagine their faces when they saw me having half a peach, for example. Or when they found out that I had had a berries and grape smoothie… or when they saw me eating –and loving- a spinach tortilla last night.

I could see it in their faces. This is it. Dad is eating fruit. The Mayans were right!”

“Sonamos. Papá está comiendo fruta. Los mayas tenían razón!”

I have been trying eat better as well, but like you, I am not real keen on veggies or fruit. It has been a real challenge for me.

  4. That's too funny. Congrats on the steps you're taking and losing the first 10 pounds. It's amazing how even 10 pounds can make you feel so much better. Especially that your blood pressure has come down. That's awesome.!

Praying for you and your family as you deal with the loss of your dear sister-in-law.
