Tell me Thursday #32 – Almost there

CanadaSanti had a spectacular soccer season this past summer. Having made –once again– the transition to our “A” team, he kicked off the season in a big way, scoring 8 goals in 4 games to win the Kick-Off cup. Once the regular season began, and in spite of two early losses in which he didn’t score at all, he came back with a vengeance: three, one, three and one goal in the next four games. At one point, he had 16 goals in 10 games, which was giving him an insane average of 1.6 goals per game!

And then… he just stopped scoring. He didn’t score a goal for our team for over a month, something absolutely unusual for him. He still led the team in shots on net and assists, but he just wasn’t scoring goals anymore. Even more, he was playing really bad! Tired? Maybe… but he had been able to score goals in the two tournaments we’ve played (and won) since his league drought began… even more, he ‘played up’ two games (this means playing for a team for players that are one or two years older) and scored one goal. I guess it was just a confidence thing.

It was very strange not to see him celebrating on every game. Even more, he had spoiled us so bad that even when he did score (the tournaments) it didn’t look like that. We won a tournament in Brantford in mid August and it didn’t look like he had done so well. I was surprised when I realized that he had scored 4 goals in 5 games. His stats were still impeccable, as he still had an average of more than one goal per game so far… I think he had just set the bar too high. It only took him to score (off a PK that I quickly assigned him to take) to get that confidence back and keep on scoring until the very last game.

He ended the season with a total of 57 goals in 60 games (counting both indoor and outdoor), having scored one of them as a call-up. It was just unbelievable. His extremely good performances continued during the fall, with him scoring some 20 goals for his high school team (I believe he was the top scorer of that league too). He could have had many more goals, if it weren’t for the fact that the coach was taking him off the field after scoring (his team was way too strong, and the coach didn’t want them to run the score against the weaker teams, something I agree with, since the High School league is more recreational than purely competitive). As mentioned before, Santi was once nominated by our local newspapers as one of the athletes of the week.

They fell short at the end of the season, as Santi’s team was eliminated during the Regionals, not being able to make semi-finals. Santi didn’t score in the last two games of his high school season, and those were the only two games in which he didn’t, by the way. An incredible season for my son, who has now been contacted about playing for his school’s senior team in the spring. Since he’s also doing so well in track and field, he will have to make a decision there…

Have I mentioned that not only he’s doing exceptionally well at sports, but he’s also doing great at school? And that he works too?

Santi is an example of commitment and dedication. He had never missed a game since he started playing competitive soccer back in 2004 (he was only 9 then!), having played 260 games in a row. He scored 145 goals and since he played several games in the net too, he earned 6 shut-outs as well. Never got injured, never got suspended, never got sick. Incredible numbers, and kudos to him for such dedication (and to me too, as I have been driving him around the entire province!).

Sadly, his streak came to an end a few weeks ago, because he couldn’t play the first two games of our current indoor season, due to work. We have two games today, and he’s going to make it this time. We’re playing one year up (this means our kids are born in 1995 and they are playing against kids born in 1994), so it’s a tougher challenge. The first game begins as this post is being published.

You think he will score? :-)

Argentina

Felicitaciones a Santi!!!
