Around Niagara Region

(En español más abajo)

CanadaWe decided to go out for a ride last weekend, and spend the whole day somewhere else. We decided to go to Niagara Falls (the other option was going to the beach in Lake Huron), and that quickly proved to have been a bad decision. That is, if you were planning to spend less than four hours on a 1.5 hour trip. The traffic was absolutely crazy that day!!!

We left home at 12:30 PM, and by 3:30 PM we were still in the QEW (Queen Elizabeth’s Way, the highway that connects Toronto, Hamilton, Niagara Falls and then Ft. Erie / Buffalo). We were moving so slowly that we decided to make an early exit and spend a couple of hours in the beautiful Niagara-on-the-lake.

Around Niagara-on-the-Lake

This town has a self-explanatory name: it’s located just where the Niagara River meets Lake Ontario. It’s a beautiful quaint town, with old buildings and a plethora of tiny stores that sell antiques, chocolates or other hand-made items. There was a lot of people walking around, so it took us some time to find a place to park.

Before we even got there, we made a stop at one of the many wineries in the area. There, Gaby, my mother in law and our friend Laura went in for a quick tour (and some wine tasting), while Carolina, Florencia and I were waiting… at the McDonald’s next door. Neither Santi (camping with some friends) nor Juan (at his friends’ place) were with us, so it was a case of ‘blessed you are among women’ for me… We ended our visit to Niagara-on-the-lake by taking beautiful pictures at the point where the Niagara River meets the lake. It was great.

We took the Niagara Way and headed towards Niagara Falls at around 7:00 PM, making a couple of stops: one to buy fruit at one of the many stores along the road and the other one to take pictures at the Niagara River Whirlpool; we got many shots of that beautiful and raging river, with a water that had an intensely green colour.

Finally, and at around 8:45 PM, we made it to Niagara Falls! To say that the place was packed was an understatement. We could barely move! The streets were paralyzed due to the high traffic and there was people walking around everywhere. It took me about 20 minutes to get from the Rainbow Bridge to where the Horseshoe Fall is! I dropped the girls there and went on to find a place to park, so I could join them for the fireworks at 10:00 PM.

There was no way I could find any parking space, so I just drove around and around; the fireworks caught me still in my car, about 800 m behind the place where I had dropped everybody off, so in a great display of timing I just happened to be there, ready to pick them up, immediately after the show ended!

We left that crazy town somehow and found a place to eat at around midnight. Then, we drove our friend Laura to her place (London, ON) and that is all I remember, because after that I traded places at the wheel with Gaby and passed out. :-)

We got back at home at 4:00 AM, I think, and of course we all went straight to bed. We were absolutely exhausted, but I still had to get up earlier to go pick up Juan!

We were photobombed!!! :-) (No clue who that lady is)

  2. The Niagara region is indeed very nice. I've never been to the Falls in the middle of the summer but I have no problem imagining how busy it must have been: last time we were there was in January, - 30C weather and still, it was busy!
