Let’s get drunk, kids

It was St. Patrick's Day yesterday, in case you didn't notice. It would have been hard not to see that had you been in Waterloo, as the city core was invaded by a horde of students that were drinking beer outside of their apartments (and also on the street) since as early as 10:00 AM (at least that I saw). There were many (way too many) incidents, about 100 people charged and the city is now dealing with the aftermath: lots of smashed beer bottles, plastic cups, supermarket carts, etc etc.

I'm not Irish or of Irish descent, but it still pisses me off that most people see St. Patrick's Day, which is supposed to be a celebration of Irish culture and heritage, as an excuse to get wasted. Like we need more drinking in here!

Call me old-fashioned, party pooper, whatever you want, but it just pisses me off to see hundreds of kids on the street, wearing green shirts and drinking themselves silly at 1:00 PM on a Wednesday. Don't they have anything else to do, like for example go to the University most of their parents are paying for? Let's not even ask those poor citizens who live in the vicinity of our two local universities what they think of this 'holiday'...

This is not a celebration, this is just a lame excuse for our youth to get drunk and act stupid. And I'm tired of it. I hope my kids have a little more common sense when they are at that age.

 

Ayer fue el día de Día de San Patricio, en caso de que no lo hayan notado. Hubiera sido imposible no darse cuenta aquí en Waterloo, ya que el centro de la ciudad fue invadido por una horda de estudiantes emborrachándose en sus casas (y también en las calles) desde horas tan tempranas como las 10:00 AM (como yo ví). Hubo muchos (demasiados) incidentes, la policía le levantó cargos como a 100 personas, y la ciudad ahora está lidiando con las consecuencias: botellas rotas por todos lados, cientos de vasos de plástico, carritos de supermercados por todos lados, etc.

Yo no soy irlandés ni tengo ascendencia, pero igual me revienta que tanta gente vea esta fecha, que se supone es para celebrar la cultura y tradición de Irlanda, como una excusa para ponerse borracho. Como si consumir más alcohol fuera algo que se necesita aquí!

Llámenme viejo choto, chapado a la antigua, buchón, lo que quieran, pero me revienta ver cientos de chicos en la calle, con sus remeritas verdes y tomándose hasta el agua de los floreros a la 1:00 PM de un miércoles. No tienen nada mejor que hacer, como por ejemplo ir a estudiar a la universidad que en la mayoría de los casos les pagan sus padres? Y no mencionemos siquiera la opinión sobre este ‘feriado’ de la pobre gente que tiene la ‘suerte’ de vivir en las inmediaciones de nuestras dos universidades...

Esto no es una celebración, sino una excusa barata que usan los jóvenes (convenientemente incentivados) para emborracharse y hacer estupideces. Y ya me cansé de ello. Espero que mis hijos tengan un poco más de sentido común cuando lleguen a esa edad.
