Acronyms

(En español más abajo)

CanadaLike every other workplace I know, mine is full of acronyms we use daily, not knowing exactly what it means. Take “PACS”, for example, which is the generic name of the software we produce in Waterloo. I am sure that if you randomly selected 10 individuals at the office and asked them “What does PACS mean?”, many would struggle… including myself. It actually means “Picture Acquiring and Communications System”, and the most common mistakes are saying ‘archiving’ instead of ‘acquiring’ and ‘control’ instead of ‘communications’…

But the constant travelling has also provided me with some cool acronyms, and some that are extremely funny but very rude. There are two that are commonly used, ‘FIGJAM’ and ‘DILLIGAF’. The first one applies to those individuals who have a very high opinion of themselves, opinion normally shared by very few; it translates into “F***, I’m God, Just Ask Me!”, which I believe is brilliant. The second one is to be used when somebody is ranting about something we couldn’t care less about. In that case we will probably say to ourselves: “Does It Look Like I Give A F***?”. DILLIGAF. Also brilliant.

A very popular one is “RTFM”, which means “Read The F***ng Manual”. I created a Spanish version of it, which would be “LEPM”. Another one we have used a lot is “CJK”, which means “Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Korean”. I guess the “T” is silent in this case…

I have met a few ‘figjams’ throughout the years; it takes very little time to be able to make them. But I haven’t had the chance to use the second acronym yet, mostly because I’m not too comfortable with swearing in English… I don’t know. But I think they’re both great.

Here are some others that I should consider using in the near future:
  • AHOY: AssH**e Of the Year (I love this one!)
  • ASTRO: Always Stating The Really Obvious
  • BITCH: Babe In Total Control of Herself
  • CHAOS: Chief Has Arrived On Scene
  • CRAFT: Can’t remember a f***ng thing
  • C**T: Can’t Understand New Technology (also Computer User Non-Technical)
  • DELTA: Doesn’t Even Leave The Airport (HA!)
  • DIMWIT: Don’t Interrupt Me While I’m Talking
  • F11K: F**k If I Know
  • FEAR: Forget Everything And Run!
  • FUBAR: F***ed Up Beyond All Recognition
  • LANO: Lights Are Not On
  • LOMBARD: Lots Of Money But A Real D**khead
  • LUCID: Leave Until Christmas Is Done
  • OGRO: O Great Responsible One (ideal for groups, committees, etc)
  • OSINTOT: O Sh*t, I Never Thought Of That!
  • SNAFU: Situation Normal, All F***ed Up
  • VEST: Very Egotistical Stupid Twit
  • VIOT: Village Idiot On Tour
  • WALOC: What A Load Of Crap
  • WOMBAT: Waste Of Money, Brains and Time (yes, it comes from Down Under)
  • YAHOO: You Always Have Other Options
  • YOYO: You’re On Your Own

I think some of these are just priceless. The problem is that now that I have published them… I will have to be careful before I use them.

I still love my job, y’know?

Argentina

En inglés: “Does It Look Like I Give A F***?”. DILLIGAF. Also brilliant.

  • AHOY: AssH**e Of the Year (“Imbécil del Año”, me encanta!)
  • ASTRO: Always Stating The Really Obvious (“Siempre Remarcando lo Obvio”)
  • BITCH: Babe In Total Control of Herself (“Chica en total control de sí misma”)
  • CHAOS: Chief Has Arrived On Scene (“El jefe ha arribado a la escena”)
  • CRAFT: Can’t remember a f***ng thing (“No recuerda una mi***a”)
  • C**T: Can’t Understand New Technology (“No entiende tecnología nueva”)
  • DELTA: Doesn’t Even Leave The Airport (“Ni siquiera sale del aeropuerto”)
  • DIMWIT: Don’t Interrupt Me While I’m Talking (“No me interrumpas mientras hablo”)
  • F11K: F**k If I Know (“Y yo qué m****a sé!”)
  • FEAR: Forget Everything And Run! (“Largá todo y salí corriendo!”)
  • FUBAR: F***ed Up Beyond All Recognition (“Tan hecho mi***a que no se lo reconoce”)
  • LANO: Lights Are Not On (“No le andan las luces”)
  • OSINTOT: O Sh*t, I Never Thought Of That! (“Mi***a, jamás pensé en eso!”)
  • SNAFU: Situation Normal, All F***ed Up (“Situación Normal, terminó como la mi**da”)
  • VEST: Very Egotistical Stupid Twit (“Estúpido imbécil, muy egoísta”)
  • WALOC: What A Load Of Crap (“Qué montaña de mi**da”)
  • WOMBAT: Waste Of Money, Brains and Time (“Un desperdicio de dinero, cerebro y tiempo”)
  • YAHOO: You Always Have Other Options (“Siempre hay otras opciones”
  • YOYO: You’re On Your Own (“Arreglátelas solito”)

  1. Love the list of acronyms. Particularly figjam. In high school the quarterback was so arrogant and so convinced he was God's gift to women everywhere, that we often referred to him as god. It was not a compliment even if he took it that way. Figjam would have been so much better, too bad I found out about it 20+ years too late.

  2. There two acronyms I like: PEBKAC and PICNIC. They are to be used by tech support people. They mean: Problem Exists Between Keyboard and Chair, and the other Problem In Chair, Not In Computer.

  6. I'm afraid the acronyms we use at work are more... well, less funny and descriptive.

As a translator, they drive me crazy though. I mean, I'm not supposed to know the meaning of each stupid acronyms lazy bastards come up with, am I???
