From Carolina to Mom

(En español más abajo)

CanadaMy mom is the most caring, selfless, hardworking and inspirational person I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. She’ll always comfort me when I’m down, forgive me if I do something wrong, work until the early hours of the morning making sure everything is set for us in the morning, and even if she’s about to break down, she will always manage to look and be strong.

I can’t imagine the hardships she went through coming to a new country with everyone speaking a different language just so her children could get a better future.

I know I’m not always the best daughter in the world, but she’s never failed at being the best mother in the world. I have a big heart which I, without a doubt, inherited from her. I hope one day I’ll be able to repay you for everything you’ve given to me.

Happy Mother’s Day to my beautiful, amazing mother.

From Florencia to Mom

(En español más abajo)

CanadaMom,
Thank you so much for everything you have done for me. From the time this sexy beast was born you have taken care of me and always protected me. I really appreciate everything you’ve done even though sometimes instead of thanking you I say something sarcastic or get mad.

But on the other side, we know how to laugh with each other and we get each other’s jokes, and that’s the best thing ever. Also somehow (I have no clue how you do this) you manage to deal with all my hyperactive bursts and my weird singing, my very beautiful spams on your phone, and my completely out of the blue questions. You are truly THE BEST!

Love,
Florencia

Florencia

Twenty-five

(En español más abajo)

CanadaIt’s hard to believe, but it’s been 25 years today. A quarter of a century. Exactly half my age. On a cool Saturday in 1992, Gaby and I tied the knot and began to live our lives together, building the wonderful family we have today.

It’s been 25 years in which we shared great times, but also bad times. We had beautiful memories, but also very sad ones. We grew up together, became better people, better spouses, and eventually, we became parents (and hopefully we are getting better at that too). We relied on those who love us, and got rid of those who didn’t. And with every single good and bad moment, and every single good and bat thing that happened to us, we got stronger. Together.

I cannot imagine my life without my wife. She is the main reason why I keep doing the things that I do. She still is the first thing I think about when I get up, and her face is the last thing I see before I fall asleep. She helped me when I fell, encouraged me while I was trying to get up, and kept me focused once I started to walk again. I hope one day I can do for her at least half of what she has done for me already.

I love you, Gaby. And I thank you for 25 years of pure happiness. I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for us!

What? Nope, I told you already. You can’t count the year and a half we dated as ‘time served’ Smile

Argentina

Juntos.

Smile

The slow cooker

(En español más abajo)

CanadaGaby has been taking great care of me since my surgery, and spends a lot of time in the kitchen, making all kinds of foods that she not only knows I'm good to eat, but also that they are healthy and for some reason I will like them. But she is also very busy with work, so she is very tired these days. I'm trying to get the kids to help out a little, and of course I am willing to pitch in as well, but with relative success. Sometimes, however, funny situations arise due to Gaby's and my kids' absent-mindness.

My wife was preparing me a lentil and chicken breast stew in the slow cooker yesterday. She got up at 6:20 AM like every day and set up everything so I would have enough food for the day. At the same time, she would cook the kids' meals so they could take them to school. You really have to value her cooking fish at 6:30 AM, when she actually hates seafood...

But as I was saying, she was making me this stew in the slow cooker, which she would serve me for dinner last night. I left way before she did, so only when I came back from work I noticed that she had never turned the slow cooker on! Puzzled, I just plugged it in and set it to 'low', knowing that there was no way I was going to have lentils for dinner. Carolina came back from school soon after, so I told her about it and we both shared a laugh. She then went back to the kitchen to make herself a sandwich...

Gaby got back home about an hour and a half later, and I immediately told her about the slow cooker. She laughed and told me she had been wondering about that all day! She then went to the kitchen and asked me:

- Well, why didn't you plug it in?
- What do you mean? I did!
- Well, it's still unplugged and dead cold...
- How can that be possib... Carolina!! Did you unplug the slow cooker?
- Oh, hahaha!! I guess I did, when I plugged in the panini maker!
- Oh, I give up...

I just had the stew for lunch today. It was delicious. And not undercooked at all.

- Ah, bueno, me rindo...

Acabo de comerme el guisito como almuerzo. Estaba buenísimo. Y bien cocido.

Strawberries

(En español más abajo)

CanadaThis happened a couple weeks ago. We already were in the middle of our preparations to move, but we also had to go to Toronto to buy Santi a good suit for his Prom last week. We had a nice day in T.O. and we came back at around 8PM.

Gaby had seen some signs advertising a Strawberry Festival in St. Agatha (a town nearby) and she wanted to go, so I was sad when we had to change plans and go to Toronto instead. But when we came back and I saw the festival ran until 11PM, I convinced her to go for at least a couple hours anyway. We arrived almost at 9PM and there was little activity by then, just a band playing live (and they were good!), the silent auction and a raffle. Gaby made a couple of bids, we all put a few tickets foe the raffle and then we went to watch the band.

A few minutes later, a lady came looking for Gaby to notify her that she had won a fire pit for our backyard. You should have seen Florencia, she was so happy!! She was already planning how many people she was going to invite over for .marshmallows and 'spider hot dogs'.

We went back to dancing, but a few minutes later they came looking for Gaby again! A little embarrassed, because we pretty much were the only people in there not involved with the event, she ended receiving a big piece of paper with lots of gift cards attached to it. Among them:

  • A $40 certificate for a local restaurant (which we’ve already used and boy it was worth it!)
  • A $25 certificate for the Meat Market
  • $10 off at a pizza store
  • A $50 cert for a beauty salon
  • A free weekend car rental

…and some other things, for a total  combined value that was way above $200. We had spent $5 or $10 in tickets, I don't remember well.

We left soon after, with lots of prices and after having had a lot of fun dancing to really good music.

I don't think we saw a single strawberry.

Argentina

Goin’ South

USAI’m travelling again, after a month-long break. In between, all I had was a couple of two-day long ‘escapades’ to Detroit, which is only three and a half hours away from home. But today I’m on my way to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where I will be for the next ten days. I was lucky to be home in October, because I got to be there for Florencia’s birthday, Hallowe’en and I could also help –somehow- Gaby with the different projects around the house.

Gaby prepared and painted the lower floor of our house, from the door and all the way upstairs to the living room. She even cut, installed and painted the baseboards herself, and the truth is that both the painting and carpentry –to call it somehow– work was excellent, better than if we had outsourced it. She also found a used counter with sink and everything that was a perfect fit four our guest washroom, and she of course installed it (this time with me, because it was heavy and complicated to handle). Gaby took upon herself to do all the plumbing work, cutting and merging pipes, etc, without a problem. The result was once again spectacular, you would never think that the counter and sink were not part of that washroom originally. The talent she has for everything related to painting, plumbing, electricity and even gas connections is nothing short of amazing.

I was home, but I was working, so to my chagrin there was little I could help her with; I would be only summoned when there was a need to pick up something really heavy or reach difficult spots with the brush. What I did help with (and very happily) was with the cooking. Yes, people, even though we live with the best chef I have ever seen in my life, my family had to endure a good week in which I was the one in charge of the food. The results were excellent; I surprised my kids (who were expecting hotdogs, rice and stews of doubtful origin and contents) with more elaborated dishes like a beef red curry with lentils and spinach or Szechuan style rice with chicken. They surprised me too, because I was making those dishes mostly thinking about my Weight Watchers points (have I told you? I’m down 17 pounds already), but they truly loved the food, so even though I made large amounts there would be very little leftovers, if any at all.

It’s incredible to see how much my eating habits have changed lately. I eat fruit now (mostly banana, but I have already taken a few berries) and I also have vegetables like spinach, chard and mushrooms, which appear on my plates more often than rice and even meat. I found myself exiting the supermarket one day, with nothing but fruits and vegetables in my bags… and I had gone there by myself! I could not believe I had not bought anything belonging to what I have always referred to as my two food groups: things you chase and things you fry. :-)

Now comes the big challenge: after a few weeks of having lost weight consistently, I’m now on the road. For the next 10 days I will be having breakfast, lunch and dinner at restaurants. It’s going to be difficult to stay within the boundaries of my diet, but I have learned a few tricks already, like going to the Mongolian grill restaurants very often, because I can make my own food there. I will tell you more about them tomorrow or Wednesday.

I just stopped at the Charlotte airport after a few months. Whenever I travel from Buffalo, chances are my flight will have a stop there, because it’s one of US Airways hubs. The airport is very nice, but to me it is only a business destination. Or it used to be, because everything changed since late April. On the 24th, exactly on the day of my 20th wedding anniversary, I was there with Gaby, making a stop on our way back from Puerto Rico, where we had gone on a second honeymoon (Gaby didn’t know where we were going until a couple minutes before we boarded our last flight). As we were waiting for our flight back home, I showed her the airport and we had dinner together, as if we were on a date.

Many times I’ve been to a place that made me say to myself “how nice it would be to bring Gaby here”. Now, every time I go to the Charlotte, NC, airport, the first thing I do is to go to the open space between Concourse B and C and I think “how nice it was when I was here with Gaby”. This place is not a business destination for me anymore, it has turned into a lovely memory.

Disaster in the kitchen

(En español más abajo)

CanadaWe’ve been busy lately. We’re making some renovations at home (painting, mostly), so Gaby has been coming back to work only to spend some six, seven more hours a day sanding, fixing, painting, retouching, cutting baseboards, etc, etc. I am very busy with my work stuff (actually working long hours lately), so I can help very little with that. Even if I could, I have no issues accepting the fact that Gaby is the one who is actually good at that kind of stuff (as well as plumbing, electricity, gas, and a long list of etceteras). She likes doing that kind of work a lot, and you should see her eyes when we go to Home Depot and we look at the power tools! She has her own set, and I have mine (my tools are mostly for electronics, though).

Since she’s been so busy, I tried to help with whatever else I could do, so for the last five days or so it has been me the one in charge of the kitchen (actually, Gaby is making soup as I write this, which would be her first contact with the kitchen in almost a week!). The interesting thing is that with the only exception of last night, in which I succumbed to laziness and ‘cooked’ macaroni and cheese, I have been applying myself. Among the dishes I have prepared for the family, I had some really good beef and vegetables red curry with Basmati rice and a Szechwan beef lo mien, for example. I enjoyed the cooking, and it seems that my ‘customers’ were happy too, because we rarely have any leftovers!

You should have seen me last Sunday, when I went to the market and came back with fruits and vegetables only. And they were mostly for me!!!! :-)

We’re both doing extremely well with our diets, and we support each other like we always do. Finding healthy food that I actually like was really cool, and I have also become smarter when on the road. I have been going to Mongolian grill type restaurants, for example. There, I fill a cup with noodles, shrimp, spinach, mushrooms and a few other things, I doused it with a generous amount of Szechwan or Hunan sauce, and to the grill it goes! It’s extremely satisfying, and much healthier than all the crap I use –used?– to eat…

It looks like I finally found the willpower I needed, because it’s been five weeks since I started my diet and I’m still in full mode. Time will tell.

Argentina
Hemos estado ocupados.

He estado yendo a restaurantes tipo Mongolian grill, por ejemplo.

For her

(En español más abajo)

Canada“Mom, you're always there to help me, to guide me, and to teach me lessons about people and life in general. You always put our interests before your own and are very selfless in that aspect. You are hardworking, kind and always provide for us. I love you.” – Santiago

“Let’s see…How do I begin… Mom, you’re somebody who is always caring, a beautiful woman and a mom with a huge heart. Whenever one of us gets hurt, you’re the one always ready with a band aid, singing to comfort us. Mommy, if you ever ask me how much I love you, I will reply: ‘count every start in the sky and you will know’, and that will never change. You have a husband and a family who love you lots and that’s forever. I know we always give you a hard time about your glasses or making fun of you because you’re a little short, but that’s just us joking. You’re a great mother, you’re beautiful, and even though I don’t say this very often, I love you with half of my heart (the other half is for Daddy)” :-) – Carolina

“Ummm… I don’t know what you say, but wow, the time has gone fast! I remember when we were at the mall when I was like 4, and you would bring me around and show me stuff. It’s so much fun to be with you, you’re an amazing mother. You help me with everything I need with, plus you’re funny! Happy Birthday, I hope you enjoyed it!” – Juan

“My mom is the BEST of them all. Even though every day we call her ‘Smokey’ (GA: she works at a smokehouse), it’s just a joke. I think that once she reads this, she will smile like there’s no tomorrow. As I was saying, she is the best out of all moms in the world. I love her because she is the FUNNIEST mom ever, she makes the best tacos and she is REALLY smart. She is the most thoughtful, most caring and prettiest! Lots of love from your daughter.” – Florencia

“It’s no coincidence that your birthday falls on International Day of Friendship. The word friend should have a picture of you for reference in every dictionary. You’re more than a friend to me, obviously. You’re the love of my life, my companion, my rock when I’m down, and the one coming for support when it’s you who has no strength. You’re a wonderful person, a perfect wife, and the kids are right, the best Mom in the world. You have so much going on, you have no idea. I’m blessed to be able to live my life with you by my side, I would be nothing if it hadn’t been for you and you know that well. I hope you had a Happy Birthday; I look forward to the many, many more we will celebrate together. Remember, you’re stuck with me”. – Gabriel

– Santiago

“A ver, a ver…

Affordable housing

(En español más abajo)

CanadaGaby has been working to make the house look pretty, like she does every spring. She bought some plants and flowers, and she spent some time putting them in planters with Florencia (who is also in charge of the watering) and then hanging some of those plants at our front door. It looks really nice.

A few days back, Gaby noticed that there was a nest being carefully built on one of those plants. Then she saw our new tenant moving in, a beautiful American Robin. Florencia was elated, but Gaby was worried and thought about taking the nest out of the plant and putting it somewhere else, because she was afraid the poor bird was going to be constantly scared because of the noise of us going in an out and would eventually abandon its children.

She wasn’t quick enough because when I came back home two days later, I found a beautiful blue egg in the nest. Our guest is staying for the duration.

Can we be considered grandparents to be? :-)
