Having lived in Canada for about 14 and a half years, you could say that my English has gotten much better. I still have, however, a strong accent, and I know it’s not going to go away any time soon.There are many words I still cannot spell correctly (‘occasionally’ is my most common problem, even though I just wrote it correctly on my first attempt); there are other words that I never know how to accentuate (and I normally pick the wrong way). Finally, there are some words that I cannot pronounce. Or should I say, I can pronounce them, but my accent does a terrible job at keeping them PG.
One of them is ‘focus’. It sounds very naughty when I say it. And I that I hate.
Habiendo vivido en Canadá por catorce años y medio, uno podría decir que mi inglés ha mejorado mucho. Sigo teniendo, sin embargo, un acento muy marcado, y dudo mucho que eso desaparezca pronto.
Hay algunas palabras que todavía no puedo deletrear correctamente (‘occasionally’ es la que más me cuesta, aunque esta vez la saqué de primer intento); hay otras palabras que nunca sé dónde acentuar (y siempre elijo la sílaba incorrecta). Finalmente, hay palabras que no puedo pronunciar. O que sí puedo, pero mi acento las hace innecesariamente cochinas.
Una de esas palabras es ‘focus’ (foco). Suena muy prohibida para mayores cuando la digo. Y odio eso.
