Silly Monkey Stories #247 – Evil dad strikes again

I am a clown at heart, so I am always doing things to make my wife and kids laugh. Most of the times, those things involve making a fool of myself and I have no problem with that. In fact, I think that the only reason some of my silly jokes do not offend anybody are because I make the extra effort to make them look like I’m a doofus who doesn’t understand a person, a situation or a specific word.

But sometimes, just sometimes, my jokes are evil. I mean, not really, but there is definitely no intention of looking like a fool. I have a recurring one these days, involving Carolina, and it’s very funny how it goes.

Every now and then, I will pick her up from school or from soccer practice, and I will of course ask her how was her day. She normally replies with a ‘I was freaking brilliant today. In fact, I believe I deserve a prize. Like, for example, a smoothie’.

“Game on”,  I think. I am on my way home already, and I make sure that I drive on a street that has a McDonalds (the one on Highland and Westmount in Kitchener is my favourite). As I am approaching the place, I switch to the left lane and slow down a little, as to build her hope. By the time we arrive to the place, I swerve to the left as if I were about to go to the drive through… only to swerve back to the right immediately after that and continue my way home as if nothing had happened. All of this is very carefully done, of course, and I ensure there’s no traffic behind me.

Carolina gets really mad, but at the same time starts to laugh because she was expecting me to do that anyway, which of course makes me laugh even more. So there she is, laughing, crying and yelling at me at the same time, and I’m trying to make her understand what is so appealing and enjoyable of seeing her face as her hope of getting some junk food vanishes away.

I always feel very bad when I say ‘no’ to anything my kids ask, or when I punish them for whatever reason. But not this. I actually find this very funny and I still haven’t found the time to feel guilty about it. :-)
