Violence in soccer (in Canada)

(En español más abajo)

CanadaI read the news on Sunday night and got the corresponding comments by e-mail and text afterwards, from friends and co-workers who either wanted to know if I had been involved in that or just wanted to have some fun at my expense... :-) What the news said is that a 30-people fight broke out this past weekend in Barrie, ON, during a game between the local team and Kitchener (I believe it was the U14 boys division).

Unhappy with the referee's decision, some parents began to yell, expressing their anger over such a stupid thing. My guess is that either some parents or a player from the opposing team replied and that is the situation escalated. Everything went definitely out of control when one of the (I presume) Barrie parents used a racial slur to refer to a Kitchener kid, who just happened to be black. Police had to be summoned to put an end to such ridiculous, embarrassing display.

I have been involved in soccer for ten years now, and I have seen everything. I have seen parents who became coaches just because they were coming to every game and that end conducting a group of kids without any preparation, not only in terms of the knowledge of the rules of the sport but also on how to deal with a group of kids that age. Then I heard them saying things like “Watch that fat kid” or arguing with a 12 year old referee at a 6 year old soccer game.

I have seen parents and coaches who are so full of it that they have don't problems embarrassing themselves in front of the players, throwing tantrums and even challenging 15 old kids to a fight. I have seen referees you shouldn't be anywhere near the soccer field and who have no clue on how to deal with kids, parents and coaches. And have players who could take a little bit of discipline from their parents because they are constantly embarrassing themselves with their actions on the pitch.

I have dealt with all that kind of people, but I will never be one of them. I realize that I coach a team I'm also setting an example and that, to me, is way more important than winning any soccer games.

I would like to think that I'm not only teaching them how to play a sport, but also how to conduct themselves in life. If at least one of them listens and learns something from me then I will consider my mission has been accomplished.
