Silly Monkey Stories #223 – Back to the future

Santi has taken all his IB exams by now so he's basically done with school already. He is still attending, but not every day, and most times just fir half of the day. Since he's 18 already, he doesn't even need us to justify his absences, so it's almost a perfect crime.

This hasn’t been easy for us, though. We never know if we are supposed to wake him up in the mornings, nor what time he's supposed to be at school. If we let him sleep in, then one of us will have to rush back home and get in trouble at work because he woke up so late he has no time to take the bus and making in time.

Last Tuesday was no exception. The teenager came downstairs and asked me, casually:

- Do you have to go the office today?
- Nope, I'm working from home, why?
- I was wondering if you could take me to school
- Sure

About 30 seconds later:

- Well, can you take me NOW?
- Why, what time do you need to be there?
- 11:00 AM

I checked my watch. It was 10:53 AM

- OK. Marty, get the De Lorean. I will fight those Libyan terrorists so we get the plutonium we need. Do you think I can reach the desired 88 mph if we go downhill on Woolwich St towards Lancaster?
- ...

This guy has no appreciation for a good movie quote.The funny thing is that we actually made it at 11:02 AM, due to the light traffic at that hour, which partially validated his request and justified his procrastinating.

I can never win.

Santi ya terminó sus exámenes de IB así que ya prácticamente terminó la escuela. Todavía va a clases, pero no todos los días y en muchos casos sólo por medio día. Como ya tiene 18, no necesita que nosotros justifiquemos sus ausencias, así que es un crimen perfecto.

No es fácil para nosotros, sin embargo. Nunca sabemos si hay que despertarlo o no a la mañana, ni tampoco a qué hora se supone que esté en la escuela. Si lo dejo dormir, uno de nosotros va a tener que salir a los cuetes para casa y meterse en problemas en el trabajo porque el tipo se despierta tan sobre la hora que no llegaría a la escuela en horario si se tomara el bus.

El martes pasado no fue la excepción. El adolescente bajó de su habitación y me preguntó de manera casual:

- Tenés que ir a la oficina hoy?
- No, trabajo desde casa, por qué?
- Me preguntaba si me podrías llevar a la escuela
- Sí, no hay problema

Unos 30 segundos más tarde:

- Bueno, me podés llevar AHORA?
- Por qué, a qué hora tenés que estar?
- 11:00 AM

Chequeé mi reloj. Eran las 10:53 AM

- OK. Marty, buscá el De Lorean. Yo me peleo con aquellos terroristas libios y consigo el plutonio que necesitamos. Pensás que podremos alcanzar las 88 millas por hora necesarias si agarramos la bajadita de Woolwich St para el lado de Lancaster?
- …

Este tipo no sabe apreciar una cita de una película buena. Lo gracioso es que llegamos a la escuela a las 11:02 AM gracias al tráfico liviano de esa hora, lo que parcialmente validó su pedido y justificó que esperara hasta el ultimísimo momento.

No hay caso. Con estos chicos nunca puedo ganar.
