I had a doctor's appointment at the local hospital on Tuesday. Nothing wrong, just a check up. I was in and out in about 45 minutes, and I was on my way out of the parking lot when I realized that the parking meter only took cash or credit. I had neither. I mean, I had a credit card, but it was my company's and it was AMEX. The gate only accepted Visa or MasterCard.

I pulled back (luckily there was nobody behind me) and drove around looking for where to park again, so I could go to the pay station at the front. But first, I had to go back into the hospital and walk (and walk) until I found an ATM and got some cash I got charged $1.75 for the withdrawal (plus the customary $1.50, because that ATM wasn’t from my bank).

10 minutes later, I was in front of the pay station, watching a lady who didn't understand what 'please remove your credit card' meant... When it was finally my turn, I looked at the screen and read: IN: 08:33 / OUT: 09:34 -> 2 hours. I was paying 2 hours for a 1:01 stay! Furious, I put my $20 and got my change back. Still cursing, I got in my car and headed towards the exit again.

The gate was already open.

El martes tuve una cita con el doctor en el hospital. Nada grave, sólo un chequeo. Entré y salí en unos 45 minutos, y me disponía a salir del estacionamiento cuando caí en la cuenta de que la barrera de la salida sólo aceptaba efectivo o tarjeta de crédito. Yo no tenía ninguna de las dos. Es decir, tenía una tarjeta de crédito, pero era la del trabajo y es AMEX. La garita sólo aceptaba Visa o MasterCard.

Hice marcha atrás (por suerte no había nadie detrás de mí) y empecé a dar vueltas por el parking hasta encontrar donde estacionar así podía ir a pagar al cajero de adelante. Pero primero, tenía que ir de vuelta al hospital y caminar (y caminar) hasta encontrar un cajero y sacar efectivo. Me recargaron $1.75 por la extracción, más los acostumbrados $1.50 que tengo que pagar si el cajero no es de mi banco.

Diez minutos más tarde, ya estaba parado en frente al cajero del estacionamiento, viendo a una señora que no entendía el concepto ‘saque su tarjeta de la lectora’… Cuando por fin fue mi turno, miré la pantalla: IN: 08:33 / OUT: 09:34 -> 2 horas. Pagaba 2 horas por una estadía de 1:01! Furioso, puse mis $20 y recibí el vuelto. Aún a las puteadas, me subí al auto y me dirigí a la salida otra vez.

La barrera ahora estaba ya abierta.
