New year

CanadaIt's Labour Day today, which in Canada means 'school begins tomorrow'. This is going to be, without a doubt, the most important, exciting, interesting and stressful year of our lives as parents: we will have three kids going to high school for the firs and only time in our lives.

Santi is about to start Grade 12, and luckily for us, it seems he has finally understood the importance of  this. He is in full study mode already and he has promised that his marks will reflect this; after a very good Grades 9 and 10 but a lackluster Grade 11, he's due for a bounce back so he can leave school and head towards his university years making a big impact.

Carolina is in Grade 10 now. Like Santi, she has a somewhat disappointing 2011/12; I'm hoping she will make a comeback as well, as she is the most responsible and hard working of the three. Setting up achievable goals, making good use of her time and surrounding herself with the right people are all critical conditions for her to be successful.

Then we have Juan,  who is in Grade 9 (and in a different school). He has always been the one who has struggled the most as school (though he never was too bad), but last year he made a remarkable improvement. I'm full of hope with him; he is more mature, more responsible and has great friends. I am confident he will have a very good Grade 9.

Flor is starting Grade 4, still a little girl but at the same time big enough to reminds us that WE are getting older too.

These are interesting times. Our kids are growing, and soon they will be ready to leave the nest. They are facing situations, temptations and dangers they have never faced before, and we are doing our best to make sure they make good choices and exercise their common sense. What they do -and refuse to do- during these years will probably affect the rest of their lives.

Knowing that I will not be around al the time to guide them and support them because of my travelling, I'm as excited as I am terrified.
