Give thanks

(En español más abajo)

CanadaIt's Thanksgiving Day in Canada today. Many people think that this is some kind of a religious celebration, but that is not exactly true. Even more, this celebration has slightly different meanings for people in Canada and US, in addition to being observed on different days (American Thanksgiving is not coming until late November).

For Americans, this holiday is intimately related to their history and heritage, as they remember the times when entire families of pilgrims were saved from a certain death from starvation by the natives, who not only brought them food but also taught them how to fish.

Thanksgiving CanadaIn both cases, however, this festivity is mainly about thanking God for a good harvest and spending time with your family counting your blessings. Liberia (in Africa) and Netherlands (in Europe) are the only other countries I know that also celebrate Thanksgiving; their celebration is also based on thanking God for the end of a good harvest.

It could be difficult for us immigrants to adapt to this and celebrate Thanksgiving; in places like where I come from, it's also very fashionable to abhor this kind of things, and everything that looks even remotely 'Yankee'. Pure ignorance, of course, and their loss: if I could 'import' a holiday into the Latin American culture, it would definitely be this one. We should be more thankful for the things we have and stop envying and/or hating other people and cultures out of ignorance.

We have embraced this celebration. We are very thankful for everything we have. This year, we get to spend Thanksgiving Day with dear friends. We will be sharing dinner with the family who invited us over their place for our first Thanksgiving Day ever, 10 years ago. Remember that story I wrote about the night when somebody left us a lot of food at our front door, in times when we were broke and unemployed? Well, these are the people we will have at home tonight, as they still are family to us.

I couldn't think of a better reason for us to sit around the table and thank God for the wonderful things we have.

Happy Thanksgiving Day, everybody.

PS: No turkey today. Gaby is making home made cannelloni, and I will be preparing a Spanish paella. Yummy!!! Smile

    Abrazos

  3. First off, allow me to wish you and your family a belated happy Thanksgiving, Gabriel!

I'm glad you're not one of those people who holds a close-minded attitude toward Thanksgiving and other typical American holidays. I always get my panties in a twist at this time of year as the anti-Halloween/Thanksgiving messages start to appear on Facebook and blogs. As you say, there's nothing wrong with giving thanks for family, friends and prosperity, regardless of one's culture or religion.

    Saludos!
