We’re all for the glory – Part 03/03

USA(Continues from here)

With the game still 0-0 and just a couple of minutes to go, our chances of finally making it to OYSL were disappearing (we had been so close!). There was only time for a heroic goal, and I knew exactly who that hero could be. Justin took a beautiful corner kick and the ball landed in the middle of the 18 yards. A couple of players missed their attempts to either clear the ball or send it in; Santi jumped just on top of the dot used for penalty kicks and opened his right leg wide. He softly touched the ball, changing its direction slightly. In my mind, it took about five minutes and a thousand bounces for that ball to go in. But it did!

Unlike the week before, we were now winning the game at the very last moment. There was only time for a couple more plays and that was it. We celebrated, of course, but we still had one more game. I shook hands with the Guelph coaches and players (they had played a great game) and left, not before I had a 30-seconds conversation with a pompous ass who had said to me right before the game:

- I want you guys to lose; if it is up to us next week (they were playing against Norwest), I will want our guys to lose so you don't move up!

You can imagine what I said to him. Hey, I can be a sore winner too!

Exactly a week later, and with me out of the country, our team face the tough opponents from London. Following a suggestion by our head count, Santi had created a 'Facebook event' and between the two of us we had invited over 200 people (plus those invited by the rest) so there was a very decent crowd, including Gaby, the kids, our friend Carlos (who is Argentine and lives in Waterloo) and part of our 'extended family', my 'niece' Tathy and her mom, who had come from London (they should've come in the bus, with the other team!). I didn't know what to do myself. Should I stay in the hotel and wait for updates? Should I just carry on and try not to think of it? Yes, right, like that would work! I sent encouraging messages to the players whose numbers or Twitter users I had, and then I went out for dinner with my co-workers.

Our guys were very nervous, and London almost scored in the first minute of play, but Santi quickly take care of business, capturing a loose ball and then sending a furious shot to the back of the net. I celebrated -loudly- as I was finishing my Won Ton soup and everybody else was talking business.

A few minutes later we were given a penalty kick, and Nikola established the 2-0. "That's it", I thought, "They can't recover from such an early lead". They did, though, as we went to halftime with the score 2-1.

A free kick by Santi in the second minute of the second half found Stefan ready as usual and it was our other striker who brought some peace to us. It seems like they celebrated for too long, though, because London quickly scored the 2-3 after what Santi described as a 'Messi-like' play.

After that, and for 30 minutes, nothing... I kept asking Juan and Caro (I had one on each phone) for news, and they kept saying that there was nothing going on. "But are we closer to scoring our fourth or is London getting closer to the tie?" I asked. "It's very even", they said, “anything could happen at this point”.

I had no more nails to bite, and my co-workers were now more pending of my reactions than of what they were talking about or the food that was still not coming after almost an hour. "We need the hero again", I thought, and then I twitted this:

I put 'Warriors' but I was of course thinking of Santi. And he delivered again.

Sam went on a fantastic run, beating guys left and right and then sent the ball through for our #7, who appeared out of nowhere and hit the ball as hard as he could, putting it in the top corner. That was it, 4-2 with less than 10 min to go, it was time to relax and get ready to celebrate.

And so we won. All these years of hard work, going up and down, dealing with frustrations and enjoying brief moments of happiness… it’s all over. Santi and the Warriors are finally going to the Ontario Youth Soccer League, at the best age possible (17). Some players don’t know how important this can be for the future of their kids; scouts usually come to OYSL games, looking for prospects they can offer a scholarship for universities in Canada and the US. Who knows, this could be Santi’s big break.

The Warriors finally did it, they’re the first boys team to go to OYSL since 2006. Santi’s huge effort and commitment is finally rewarded, and I couldn’t be prouder.

Argentina
