Silly Monkey Stories #159 – Alfredo

USAYear 1987 – Juan Pablo (3) and Sebastián (2)

I have two younger brothers, from my dad's second marriage, that are 17 years younger than me. My father and Cristina had been looking for a baby for years, with no luck. One day I caught them talking about it, and with the candor only a teenager can have, I oversimplified this like this:

- So you can't have a baby... Why don't you guys adopt one instead? (Jokingly, to Cristina) You'll see that the moment you have your own kid and stop worrying, you'll get pregnant in no time.

And that's exactly what happened, which is why my youngest two brothers are only 8 months apart. Oh, and I'm my youngest brother's godfather! :-)

Being 18 by the time Sebastián (the youngest) was born, my relationship with my two little brothers was more of that of a young father (I would prefer 'cool uncle') than an older brother. They were very cute, bright kids, so I enjoyed playing with them a lot.

One of their favourite things ever was whenever 'Alfredo' showed up. Alfredo was nothing more than a sock puppet (in reality, one of my red socks). Alfredo would talk to them as if they were adults, asking them how things were at work, etc, always with a deep voice. And my brothers (especially Juan Pablo, the oldest of the two), would reply lowering their voices too! We would spend hours, with my two silly little brothers talking to their friend, completely oblivious to the fact that it was me talking to them through a sock...

But the funniest thing would happen whenever I decided it had been too much and put Alfredo away. Juan Pablo would keep asking:

- Where's Alfredo? Where did he go? Where's he at?

But he would do this using a guttural, raspy voice (think Christian Bale's 'Batman'), very unnatural for a 3 year old. It was incredibly funny.

I never brought Alfredo back from the socks drawer for my kids' amusement. I wonder what their reaction would have been!

Alfredo, 2011 version. I know, it’s not red… he died his hair, OK?

  1. That's why you're such a great Dad! You had a lot of practice being a "cool uncle" before you had your own children. :D
