Embarrassing moments – #43

(En español más abajo)

Embarrassing moments

USAI’m at the Los Angeles airport right now, waiting for my flight to Orlando, Florida, where I will be until Sunday afternoon (I wonder if Hurricane Irene will allow me to land there tomorrow morning… or leave on Sunday)

I got here with plenty of time after a 4 hour drive from where I was. As I’m lining up to go through the security check, my attention was caught by a security guy who would repeat every instruction not less than ten times before moving onto the next:

- Empty all pockets… empty ALL pockets… empty all pockets… EMPTY all pockets…

A few minutes later:

- Laptops on a separate container… LAPTOPS on a separate container… Laptops on a SEPARATE container…

It was obvious that he was just having fun, his face was a pretty good give away. He was doing a good job at keeping people amused too.

When it was my turn to send my stuff through the conveyor belt, I look at the security guy inquisitively, as in asking for permission to play along. He winked! So I of course did what I do best: made a fool of myself in front of a lot of people.

- Excuse me, sir. What was it that I was supposed to do with my pockets?

- Is it OK if I put my belt this way? If not, it looks like a snake and that scares me

- Should I fold my pants before I send them through the conveyor belt?

The guy was so cool, he would reply to me staying in character. Even the other security clerk who was sending my personal effects through the belt was playing along!

I really had a lot of fun, and so did the hard working security employees. So when I decided that this post should be part of my ‘Embarrassing stories’ series?

Well… it happened the moment I turned around and saw the faces of all the people who was behind me in the line. It’s true that some looks can hurt.

I was ‘randomly selected’ to go through that scanner.
My Latino name had nothing to do with it
