This is what I like to do

(En español más abajo)

CanadaIn spite of my obvious health issues, I am a very active person, and lead a very active life. I’m still involved with my kids’ activities outside of school and try to spend as much time as possible with them, though my services are being required less and less due to obvious age reasons (i.e. my kids are getting older and I’m gradually less fun to have around).

I have been very involved with Santi’s soccer team since he was 10. After a first year in which I was just a parent, I was asked to join as manager, then as assistant coach. Once my son made the transition from our “B” to our “A” team, I began to play that dual role (assistant coach / manager) for Santi’s new squad, but without actually leaving my previous team. The end of the last summer season found me as manager and assistant coach for both teams, and also as the occasional coach for Carolina’s group. If you add the fact that I have coached Caro and Juan in house league several seasons (with great success, I might add), you get the idea of how committed I am to this. Florencia is next on my list.

On top of all of my coaching and managerial duties, last year I became our league’s representative to WOYSL (Western Ontario Youth Soccer League), which means that I am the contact point for any issues that our 13 teams playing in WOYSL leagues could have. This required me to travel to London, ON for meetings or discipline hearings, and I didn’t mind that at all. Even more, just last week I put my name forward for a Director position at WOYSL (but unfortunately lost in the elections). There’s no doubt in my mind that I will go for it again next year.

But soccer is not the only thing I dedicate time to when I’m not at home or work. I am also involved in my church’s life, and I’m currently its Chair of Worship, which means I hold monthly meetings with the Ministers, our Director of Music and a group of other members of my church who volunteer their times as well.

And this is the thing: this is all volunteer work. I don’t get paid a dime for the countless hours I spend running around with the kids or meeting with fellow church goers on a cold winter night. Even more, I don’t get reimbursed for any of the trips I have to make or the hotels I have to stay at (unless it’s an ‘official’ WOYSL business, in which case I get reimbursed for the gas). I take a lot of pride in what I do, because I care about my kids, the development of soccer in my adopted country, and I do care about my church; this is why I make a very conscientious effort to do things the best possible.

I can’t brag about all the volunteering I do, because many people here are on the same boat. You won’t find a lot of Canadians who don’t give any of their time to a noble cause. I can’t think of any I know off the top of my head!

I’m in a difficult time these days. I have just resigned my coaching position –a decision that has broken my heart, but that I had to make– and I’m not sure of what am I going to do with regards to my church position. I might stay, because I think I may have actually done a good job, and I enjoy doing it. It’s the soccer ‘thing’ that I still have to deal with; it’s been too many years, too many games, so many kids… kids that I have been coaching since they were eight, nine years old and that are fine young men today. I certainly will miss spending time with them, but well, I have to move on.

I will come back, eventually, I’m sure of that. I like my job, I work for a great company, and I like to think that what I do helps people have a better quality of life. But that is what I have to do; it’s what put the food on the table.

But spending time with Gaby and the kids, coaching other kids that I love as if they were mine, volunteering my time at church… that is what I like to do. And I’m planning on doing these things for a long time.

Argentina
