Live from Waterloo: The town fair

A week ago Sunday I left the hotel for lunch and found that the street it was in had turned into a fair. I went to check it out, but unfortunately it was already closing.

I got there a little earlier yesterday, so I could walk around and take some low quality pictures with my cell phone. Most of the stores were selling fruits and vegetables, though I did catch the odd one selling spices, as colourful as you can imagine and boy did they smell good!

Then I found some guys selling fish and it couldn't have smelled fresher. I actually paid close attention to see if I could find one moving, like when I was a kid and went to the Port of Necochea.

The final stop was right on the corner with Augusta Ave, where the fair came to its end. That was by far the most popular stand, and I soon verified why: they were selling all kinds -really, more than 20 different flavours- of 'pasteis'.

I wasn't about to leave without trying one or two, especially since I knew how good they were already! Bought a cheese one and a beef one, and that constituted my lunch.

Mmmmm... Best R$6.00 (~ U$S 3.50) I have ever spent, I'll tell you that.

El domingo pasado salí del hotel a almorzar y me encontré con que la calle estaba cerrada, porque había una feria de comida. Fui a ‘chusmear’, pero lamentablemente ya estaba cerrando.

Esta semana salí más temprano así pude pasear un rato y sacar algunas fotos de baja calidad con mi celular. La mayoría de los negocios vendían frutas y verduras, pero había alguno que otro que vendían especias, tan coloridas como se las puedan imaginar… y lo bien que olían!

Luego me encontré un puesto en que vendían pescado, y olía realmente fresco. Me quedé mirando los ‘bichos’ para ver si se movían, como cuando yo era chico y me iba a comprar al Puerto de Necochea.

La parada final fue justo en la esquina con la Avenida Augusta, donde la feria terminaba. Ahí estaba el que era por mucho el puesto más concurrido, y pronto averigüé el por qué: vendían toda clase –como 20 sabores distintos- de 'pasteis' (algo así como las empanadas argentinas, pero rectangulares). Son fritas, como hacen las empanadas en el interior de mi país, especialmente en el Norte.

No me iba a ir sin probarlas, así que me compré dos, sobre todo teniendo en cuenta que ya había comido una vez y me habían encantado! Me compré una de queso y una de carne, y eso fue mi almuerzo.

Mmmmm… Los mejores R$6.00 (~ U$S 3.50) que haya gastado, les diré.
