Lethal weapon

Canada
There are very few things more annoying than a fly circling around your head while you’re trying to eat, work or just lose categorically to your wife playing ‘Burako’ (an Argentine take on the well known ‘Rummy-O’). For whatever reason, whenever a fly makes its way into my home, they decide to do laps around the dining room and the kitchen. Even more interesting, they always fly in the same direction (clockwise). Since I normally sit with my back towards the window, I can see them coming from the living room and then take a sharp turn right towards the kitchen…

image You might not know this, but I’m a ninja. Well, almost, I have a hard time with the disappearing trick (never managed to disappear more than 40, 45% of my body, for obvious reason). But after a few minutes of dealing with these Phaenicia sericatas and their lack of respect for personal space, I can no longer control that killing machine that I have for a body, and it’s time to get into action.

I proceed to turn off all the lights, except for the one in the washroom. I then slither into that room and remain indiscernible from the surrounding environment through deception, utilizing my vast array of camouflaging techniques. I remain motionless for whatever time is necessary, going to the extreme to interrupt my blinking and my breathing for over –let’s say– 30 minutes. I might be exaggerating here.

Eventually, the poor victim flies into the washroom, and then I carefully close the door behind it. Once me and my pray are locked in… CRASH! BAM! POW! I swing at it with whatever I have (newspaper, a magazine, a comb, the towel) until I finally catch it. I then proceed to grab it using some toilet paper and then I unceremoniously dispose of my enemy by flushing it down the toilet, with the satisfaction of having won another deadly battle.

There’s only one problem: I normally do this very late at night (let’s say… 2:00 AM), when most people choose to sleep; this means that most of the times my victory dance is interrupted by my beloved wife, who sends respectful regards to my mother and my whole family all the way to Ancient Egypt.

She doesn’t understand that it’s a family thing. I remember that night many, many years ago when not only me but also my brother Martín (Fafa) and my father were trying to catch two mosquitoes in my room at 3:00 in the morning… using tennis rackets. It was ‘many, many years ago’ but I was 18, OK? So my father was 48… But Cristina (my stepmom) found out amusing, unlike Gaby, who just calls me several names that I cannot reproduce if I want to keep this blog ‘family friendly’.

  1. This post cracked me up because it totally reminded me of Daniel. He is obsessed with killing any fly or mosquito that dares enter our humble abode. If he must do so at 2am, all the better. Thanks for a good laugh! :)

  5. :D

Must be a guy thing. Feng has to catch mosquitoes and flies (bare handed, woohoo!). I'm more into discussing the problem: "please, the noise is annoying, can you buzz somewhere else?" :$
