Champion (2)

Canada

Our soccer season seems to be (finally) coming to an end, but it still had some surprises in store for us... and this one was a great one!

Santi's team -Waterloo Panthers- played the end of season Cup on Saturday. Due to the draw, we were required to play two full games while our second adversary would be fresh, but well...

We started our game against Stratford in great form, taking a quick 2-0 lead (the second scored by Santi). We went 3-0 into halftime, and Stratford scored their lone goal 40 seconds into the second period, in an unfortunate play that caused our keeper to be injured, to the point that he could not continue playing. This meant that Santi had to dress up and go to play in net for the rest of the day, and he did great.

He made a few critical saves, including a free kick just outside of the 6 yards. We won that game 4-1 and advance to the semi-finals, but without a keeper for the second game against Owen Sound (the one team we wanted to beat!). To make things even worse, we had our call-up keeper with us (he's the younger brother of one of our players, with appropriate clothes, playing book, etc) but we could not use him, as call-ups are not allowed in the Cup...

Santi played great, keeping the score 0-0 during the 80 minutes. Then we made a risky decision: we sent Santi out to score the winner (he was fresh, after all) and put another player in net. You know how this is... first shot in, Owen Sound scored and that was the end of it... but our weekend wasn't over.

The "A" team needed Santi's services once again, due to unforeseen absences, injuries and religious reasons (some of the players are fasting due to Ramadan). Coaches were happy Santi was going because he had scored every time he played up for them this season. After we had confirmation that they had made it to the semi-finals of the tournament in St. Catharines, away we went on Sunday at 6:45 AM...

The semi-final saw a comfortable 6-0 win for Waterloo against Barrie. Santi went in 15 minutes into the first half and stayed for the rest of the game, scoring two nice goals in the second half. But the best was yet to come.

While we were waiting for the final, we watched a few more games, and witnessed parents looking like complete idiots in front of their kids. One guy even made a run-in to threat a 14 year old boy because he had 'intentionally' hurt his kid, then he yelled at the other parents and even attempted to get into a fist fight with the other parents... then I found out that both teams were from St. Catharines!!!!

Then it was showtime. Waterloo started very strong, but took a goal from St. Catharines (a team they had lost to in the round robin) off a corner kick, in an isolated play. The score at halftime was 0-1 and things weren't looking good...

Santi went in after the halftime break and had a really good shot right after he touched the ball for the first time. He was playing as well as he did in the semi-final, or even better. A few minutes later, he received a long pass just outside of the box on the left. He dribbled past one player and went all the way to the end line; when everybody was expecting him to send the ball across, he cut in and went back a few yards, beating the same guy again. Then he suddenly turned around and sent a furious shot towards the net, that went in between the keeper's legs. GOAL! And the score was now 1-1. That probably was Santi's best goal ever with this team.

A few more minutes passed and Santi continued to play in a great fashion. He captured a ball right in the center line and started running towards the net, fighting a couple of players on his way. When he was about to take the shot, a defender slid in and sent the ball to the corner. It was from that corner kick that the game-winning goal came, scored by the team's best player with a beautiful header (and Santi was right behind him should he had failed).

Same as last year…Como el año pasado…

Waterloo won 2-1 and clinched the championship for the second year in a row. I spent the whole day explaining the rest of the parents that I had had nothing to do with Santi's decision to go back to the 'B' team and promising -a white lie- that I would talk him into trying out for this team again. After all, and as I said, it's his decision, not mine. But I think he's just figured out. The referees chose the recipient of the MVP award, and even though there's no doubts about the player who got it, I'm sure they thought of Santi in the process.

So here I am, resting after another soccer-filled weekend. And we're not done yet! Carolina has a tournament next Saturday, so we're all going to Aurora (just North of Toronto). We will also find out if Santi makes it to his high school soccer team this week, and then we have the tryouts for the 2010 season on the 26th. On top of that, Santi and his team will be playing their first indoor league ever as of October, so be prepared for more stories like this one coming up!

UPDATE Mon 14/Sep/2009 - 12:00 PM: Santi just called me to let me know he made the preliminary cut...

Santi and the two teams he played for this weekendSanti y los dos equipos para los que jugó

Same as last year (2)… then Santi was on the team and Thomas was a guest. Roles reversed this year

Y aún no hemos terminado!!!
