Embarrassing moments - #04

Embarrassing moments

CanadaIt was 1979. I was living in Buenos Aires, and those were dangerous times. I was only 12, and I would say I was totally oblivious to what was going on (the military government had taken over three years before, and thousands of Argentines were being kidnapped and/or killed). I guess that innocence came to an end the day my mother came in a hurry to pick us up from school, because they  had bombed a car right in front of our house, with the expected gunfire afterwards. Some of the bodies were still there by the time I came back home…

But that’s not the story I want to tell, of course. I was in Grade 7 at “San Marón” school in downtown Buenos Aires. It was a private Catholic school, but let’s just say they weren’t too picky when it was time to accept students coming from other schools (two of my classmates and one kid from Grade 6 were expulsed when it was found out that they had stolen money from our school and another one… at age 12!). I only went to that school for a year, but I still made really good friends (many of them I have just met again through the magic of Facebook).

There was only one girl in our class, but she soon left. During the afternoon, however, three girls from Grade 6 would join us, who knows why (I don’t remember exactly, it was so many years ago!). I remember their names: Virginia, Paula and Ana Laura. I fell madly in love with the last one…

She was a very pretty girl, with long hair in pigtails. She had a very soft voice, and you could say she was a little shy. For once, instead of acting like a complete fool (like any normal kid would in the presence of the girl he likes) I was actually kind and well behaved. I would do silly things like draw her (she normally sat in front of me), but the drawings were actually pretty good. And I would walk back from school with her. The fact that she lived just half a block away from my place helped a lot!

As much in love as I was, I had no idea of how to win the heart of my beloved one. I would spend the whole day thinking about her, but never once I made any attempts at letting her know how I felt. Being 12 wasn’t an excuse for being so slow, I will tell you, based on my ‘progress’ through the adolescence…

But unbeknownst to me, she was starting to fall for my mild mannered courtship. One day, coming back from school, I paid her a very casual compliment on her beauty (I wasn’t trying to impress her at that time, but simply replied to a negative comment she had made about herself). To my huge surprise, Ana Laura replied:

- Gabriel… I think you’re winning me over.

There it was, the moment that I had been waiting for so long! What could I say now? That was the perfect opportunity for me to tell her how I felt! I regained my composure, and after a few seconds that felt like an eternity I replied, still nervous:

- Me??? Winning you over? You mean you think I’m trying to… Oh, no, not at all! Where did you get those ideas from?
What a moron. There she stood, all confused, trying to figure out what the heck was wrong with me. We resumed our walking, and nothing really changed from then on. We would remain good friends, and I would still walk back home with her every day.

But I knew I had blown my only chance with this girl. Not only that, I had looked like a complete fool. But well, if wasn’t my first time and it certainly wasn’t going to be my last…

Argentina

  1. I have a one or two moments like that. But really, you end up remembering them for what could have happened more than you remember the things that did happen with other girls. The girl I was afraid to kiss is the one I'll never forget.

    - Alvarez: 'Bigotudo'
    - Borges: Me prestaría la goma?
