Live from… Wichita, Kansas

USAIt’s 2:00 AM on a Sunday, and I’m tired (and a little lonely too, let’s not kid ourselves). I went to work at 12:00 PM on Friday, and came back to the hotel at 5:00 PM… on Saturday. Yep, 27 hours without a break. But you know what? It was well worth it, because we fixed the damn thing.

I went out for dinner at 5:30 with my colleagues from work, and was passed out in my bed by 6:15. I woke up again at 11:00 PM, had a coke, watched the last episode of “ER” that was waiting for me in my laptop, and I’m trying to fall asleep again now (knowing that it might not happen), because I’m expected back at the hospital tomorrow at 9:00 AM.

My hotel room in Wichita. Big, isn’t it?Mi habitación de hotel en Wichita. Grande, no?

Many people might think otherwise, but I don’t like to travel. Seriously. I actually like being on the road, which is different, and that’s because of two main things: one, that I learn a lot from every trip I make and two, that  I get to see that we make a difference, and that I play a role –no matter how small– in people getting better treatment these days. That feels great, and makes up for the long and uncomfortable trips (17.5 hours between Waterloo and Wichita? C’mon!), but definitely not for being alone in a hotel room for hours every evening, missing your wife and kids… and knowing that they miss you too.

It gets even worse when I’m on the phone and find out that one of the kids is sick, or screwed up majestically in school, as I feel powerless. Telling Flor that she’ll be OK or Juan that he has to keep a cool head is not that effective when you’re 5,000 km away. And let’s not even talk about missing birthdays and anniversaries… Poor Juan, I have been out of the country for three of his ten birthdays so far…

Gaby told me something that broke my heart today. On Thursday night, Florencia started to cry, saying that she missed me very much (I do too, my love). When Gaby asked her why she was so sad, she replied that Daddy is going to find another girl and go to live with her and never come back home”. As if!! I know that we can all find this situation cute and even funny, but that left me thinking of what the kids feel when I’m not around. Do they actually suspect that I would rather be travelling? I’ve been doing this for almost two years now, and not only pays the bills but also allowed me to meet a goal I was chasing for years, when I was finally able to get a ticket for Gaby to go back to Argentina. But many times I wonder if I will be able to keep up with this life.

I think I better go back to bed and try to catch some Z’s. My keyboard is driving me crazy, adding a couple of ‘a’ every time I hit a ‘d’. What’s going on? It looks like I’m typing in fake Italian when my words end looking like “roada” and “heada” or in Dutch with words like “todaaay” and “birthdaaays”… but I’m rambling, unequivocal sign that I’m still very tired.

My life sucks these days, and it’s great at the very same time. I like my life being so contradictory, because it reflects exactly how my personality is. That must be the reason why we get along so great.

Argentina

I liked this shot I took at Detroit Airport.

  2. Well, first off, let me start by saying that most of us feel more pessimistic about our situation when we're tired. I hope you're feeling more "up" after a decent night's sleep. But to address your concerns about your family missing you and vice versa while you travel, perhaps you could use a webcam to talk to them "face to face" while you're away. Maybe it would help make your check-ins with them more comforting/satisfying.Also, maybe it would be helpful to sit down and talk to your kids and reiterate to them how much you really do miss them when you're gone, and that you only do it for reasons like sending Gaby to Argentina, etc.I hope I wasn't being to obtrusive with my advice, but I felt bad after I read your post and I wanted to offer a little help.Hugs!

  3. Oh, and on a completely unrelated note, you had mentioned before that you use Windows Live Writer to compose your blog posts. I decided to try it out, and I really like it! Thanks for the tip.

  5. <>Dhemz<>, thanks for your visit. Much appreciated.<>Katie<>, I appreciate and respect your comments very much. I'm not sad, or tired (well, I am today) and much less tired of my job. It's that sometimes that cons feel stronger than the pros... but I love this.<>Mike<>, gracias, hermano.

  7. Dropped by after seeing your advert request on one of my blogs. I recognized Wichita right away...it's only 2 hours from me. Looks as though you stayed at the hotel in Old Town...a very nice place if you are having to get around downtown. As I was reading your post it actually reminded me of the last time I stayed there for a training seminar. I am very fortunate that I am able to attend most of my daughter's activities, but on this occasion I missed my daughter being crowned Ford County 4H Queen. I remember standing on the sidewalk outside the hotel shedding a few tears for missing such an (at the time) important moment in my daughter's life. I was very happy that my husband was able to video the event for me to watch as many times as I desire. lolI hope your stay in Kansas was pleasant.
