Unaccompanied minor

CanadaWe have great news. Again. My brother Paco is getting married with his girlfriend Florencia in a little more than a month. Gaby met her when she went to Argentina and said she was just an adorable girl. Though I only know her by phone and still have no reason to doubt my wife.

Their original plan was to go to Europe for their honeymoon, and then make a stop in Canada on their way back home. That would have been awesome because it's clear that we cannot go. Even more, chances are I will be travelling, but to a different place (on business) by the time they get married. My brother Guillermo and his family are travelling to Argentina, same as my mother. Once again, like many other times, we would be the only ones not present...

But then I suggested something that I had been thinking about for months: what if we sent Santiago to Argentina? After all, he's 13 now, and he's Paco's godson... The moment we mentioned to Paco that we were evaluating that possibility, he jumped right at it. "Really? You would let Santi come all by himself???" he asked, incredulous. "Well, yes... we're just trying to find tickets we can afford", we replied. That was all he needed to know: "Don't bother. We're buying the ticket ourselves", he said and we reluctantly ended accepting the deal. After all, it was our only chance.

Santi will be flying on November 12th (via New York and Santiago, Chile) and will be back home on December 5th. We're already dealing with his school so he won't miss too much, or gets some special project to work on while he's down there. Initially, we were concerned about sending Santi alone and thought of paying the extra fee so he travels as an 'unaccompanied minor'. This means that somebody from the crew would take care of him and walk him from one plane to the other, etc. But we realized that Santi is big enough to do that by himself...

Because I'm away from home, I actually had to break the news to him by phone, so I missed watching his face (we're talking about the dream of his life!). Of course, we dealt with the logical jealousy coming from the other kids ("Why can't I go too?"). Even Florencia said "I've never been to Argentina!!!". She doesn't remember her trip with me two years ago! :-)

My first impression is that the whole thing hasn't sunk in for Santi yet. But my brothers are just hyper-excited. Martín called me to the hotel last night and sounded like an 11 year old that was told he was going to Disney World. "I just can't wait for him to come! I'm planning so many things to do with him, I don't know if I'm going to have enough time!". Paco is the same, thanking us "for letting us borrow Santi". Man, we couldn't be happier... and you're the one bringing him!!!

Both Martín and Paco were -and still are- very close to my kids. They would come and visit us all the time and spend time with them back in Argentina. Martín, for example, would take the train and travel for over one hour every Tuesday to come and have dinner with us and my mother in law, and then another hour or so to go back home. The kids miss them, and I know they do too. If there's anybody for whom I felt bad when we left, they were Martín, Paco and my mother in law. Noemí, luckily, gets to come fairly often and spend time with them, but Martin hasn't seen them since when he came in 2003 and Paco just saw them for the first time in five years back in May. Too little time for such big love.

I know that Santi being there for three weeks is not the same as all of us going, but it's going to be good enough. My family (and Gaby's, of course) will enjoy having our big boy around.

And for Santi, this will surely be the experience of his life. I better get prepared for twenty days of craziness until he finally leaves!

Argentina
Tenemos grandes noticias.

  8. Such wondeful news! Santi must be beside himself! I have always sent my kids as UM's. Is there an extra fee for that? They hated it, anyway. They had to wear huge tags around their necks that said UM. It was all so humilitating! Does Santi remember being on an airplane... Congrats to your brother :) I hope that everyone has a great time.
