My most important goal. Ever.

CanadaOne day, my uncle and aunt organized a barbeque at my grandfather Pepe's farm, to which they invited all of their friends. Since I practically 'lived' there at the time, I also attended. I would be around seven or eight years old at that time.

Along with Pepe and my cousin Cristian, I had been working a lot to prepare a big open area we had near the entrance, so it would be levelled and clean. The idea, of course, was to transform that into a soccer field.

Once the field was levelled and free of weeds and other plants, we brought some huge wooden posts that Pepe got and placed them vertically inside some very deep holes we had dug not without effort. But that was the 'easy' part, because we then had to put the crossbar! I won't go into details, but imagine two kids, aged 8 and 9, helping a 70-ish year old guy to place and tie a 3  metres long wooden post that is hanging two metres from the ground! Incredibly, it was a resounding success and the nets looked impeccable. They didn't have a net, actually, but still looked 'real'.

Coming back to the subject of this story, my uncle and his friends organized an impromptu soccer game right after lunch that day. Truthful to the Argentine tradition, the best two players proceeded to pick their teammates through the system we call 'bread and cheese': they stood facing each other and then moved forward, taking very short steps one at a time, until one steps onto the other guy's foot. After that, they proceeded to pick their future teammates one at a time: "Carlos", "Juan", "Enrique", "Ernesto"... even Pepe played that day, with long pants and black shoes, because they needed an even number of players.

The game started right away, but there was something odd: not everybody in there was an adult. Right in the middle of that group of thirty-somethings, there was a little guy trying to hit that ball as hard as everybody. Yes, of course it was me. I had asked so many times, that they ended letting me play. It didn't matter which team I played for, because I was so little (and played so bad), that my contribution would surely go unnoticed...

I kept trying anyway, even though the ball seemed to be smart enough to avoid me every time it came near my feet. Truth be told, I was a disastrous player, and my presence on the field was turning the game into 'soccer with obstacles' for the rest. But I never stopped trying.

Just when I was about to lost my hope and was already planning to leave the field, the incredible happened. There was a corner kick for my team, and I went forward as if my presence would be a threat. My chances of scoring via a header were slim to none, so I stood just outside the box.

They took the corner kick and somebody tried to connect a header, unsuccessfully. A defender cleared the ball badly, and the ball rolled very slowly towards me. I didn't give it a lot of thought, and just hit the ball with all my strength, with a toe punt. The ball went in between hundreds, thousands of legs and to my surprise, went into the net.

"Gooooal!", everybody shouted. And "gooooal!" I screamed too, off the top of my lungs, running around like crazy. It was dark already, so there was little time left for the game. I might have scored the winning goal for my team!

My uncle, who hadn't seen the play, stopped me and asked me: "Who scored?", maybe thinking about going to tease the scorer. To his surprise, I replied: "Me!" and resumed my celebrations.

I remember the stupefied look my uncle gave me, as well as many others. Even more, I believe I left the field immediately afterwards, to continue enjoying my success. I had met my goal already.
