Birth stories #2 - Carolina

birthstories
(This is my second story of the four I'm writing for the "Birth Story Carnival" that Lotus held at her "Sarcastic Mom" blog. I know this took place on March 24th, but I would still love to participate in it. For more birth stories, click here).

CanadaThings were going really well for us. I had a new job (at IBM), and even though I had to travel to downtown Buenos Aires every day at first, I was soon transferred to the location in Martínez, which was just 10 blocks away from home. I was finally on a diet, so I had lost over 30 kg (yes, more than 65 pounds). I was so skinny, that more than one asked me if I was sick! :-)

Caro y Mamá durmiendo Gaby was doing exceptionally well with her pasta and pizza store ("Marco"). They were at the top of their game, with many -and big- customers, like supermarkets and gas stations, lining up to buy her empanadas and pizzas. Santi was growing up and becoming a very smart and cute little boy. Since he was around adults most of the time (us, my in-laws), he developed a speaking ability that was totally uncommon for a 1 year old. He had a very rich vocabulary, and he knew how to use it. There's a lady who has a grocery store close to where we lived, that still remembers how Santi could identify all the fruits and vegetables since he was a little over a year old.

If there was anything we needed to make things even better for us, was another kid coming. And that's exactly what happened. Once again we went through the "Eva test" (that's how it's called in Argentina) and once again we got a positive. A few months later, another amniocentesis study gave us the news that it was going to be a girl this time (and the 'guessing the sex' score was now 2-0 in my favour). We didn't need a book of names this time: I asked Gaby what did she think about the name Carolina, and told her that it was the name I was going to have had I been a girl. In fact, my father had always wished he would have a daughter named Carolina (and he had five boys), so the next best thing would be to have a grand-daughter named Carolina. Gaby liked the name, so Carolina it was. Strangely, we decided not to give her a middle name, so she's Carolina Almada. We would repeat that pattern with Florencia, so even both our boys have two names (Santiago Nicolás and Juan Francisco), our girls don't (Carolina and Florencia). There was no question about the godparents: since both of us were godparents to my brother Guillermo and his wife Analía's second daughter (Valeria), they would be Carolina's.

Carolina en brazos de Papá The due date was getting closer, and we knew that Gaby would go through another C-section because it had been less than two years since she had given birth to Santi. I have to tell you, knowing when Carolina was going to be born (March 21st, 1997) was a little disappointing to me. Planning a birth (such an important event) like you plan other more mundane things really upset me. I used to joke: "Well, on Friday I get up early, I go to the bank, then have lunch, then we go have the baby", like it was just another thing to do, but I was actually angry.

Carolina had other plans, though. The Saturday before our due date, we went to see the obstetrician for one last time. Gaby's belly was huge, to the point that those who know it all had predicted that we would have twins. "You know", they would say to me, "Your dad is a twin, and it's known it jumps a generation". Yeah, right, like I was the one who would contribute with the eggs instead of the sea monkeys (oh, sorry, too graphic?) :-)

The thing is that we went to the doctor, and he did an ultrasound and a fetal monitoring so we could hear the baby heart beating. Everything was normal, but the heartbeats were very uniform; they were in the 140 beats per minute region, which is OK, but they normally should go down to 120, then up to 160, then down again... Carolina seemed to be stuck in 140. The doctor thought there could be something wrong, and maybe the baby was overdue (Gaby's belly was so big that he thought that we either had a 'superbaby' or there was some other problem). He then decided that Gaby would have her C-section that same day. Gaby got worried, I was just delighted: I had gotten my wish, an 'unexpected' birth date. I was dreaming I would get to drive to the hospital at 3AM wearing my pyjamas. This probably was as close as I would ever get.

Carolina was born exactly at 4PM (same as Santi) of the 15th (same as Santi!) of March (OK, different than Santi). She was a perfectly healthy baby; but she was very tiny! She barely weighed 2.850 kg (a mere 6.28 pounds) and actually lost some weight during the first few days. One of her tear ducts was blocked; Santi had had the same problem, and he actually had a minor surgery to correct it. In Carolina's case, I was able to fix it by massaging her eyes patiently every day for a few months, until one day it just got 'unclogged'.

Tiny as she was, she was a beautiful girl, a perfect complement to the beautiful boy we already had. She was my princess, and she still is. Only problem is that she has somehow developed into a beautiful pre-teen overnight, and I really didn't notice. And I always thought it was her the one whose head is in cloud nine! It caught me by surprise; Carolina is not a baby anymore.

She's a beautiful, talented, funny and caring girl. She couldn't be more like her mom. Sometimes she can also be stubborn, childish, a little irresponsible or just plain silly.

Good to know she got something from me too.
