Geek Moments #1: A shared moment of stupidity

CanadaIt happened to me last Wednesday. I needed to restore a DAT72 tape, so I went to a computer lab that I knew had equipment with such devices. I found one of the most knowledgeable IT guys I know in the lab, so I asked him where those machines I needed to use would be. He pointed them to me, and away I went.

It was a database what I had to restore, so I installed MS SQL Server 2000 SP4 on that machine and proceeded to go to the 'Restore database' dialog. Selected the tape device, inserted the tape and clicked on 'Restore'. Nothing. No reading, no response, nothing.

Puzzled, I asked my colleague for help. We soon found out that the tape drivers weren't installed, so we downloaded them from Dell's website and installed them. But still nothing. There was another computer right next to the one we were working on, and that one also had a DAT72 device. I asked my colleague if we could try that one to which he said yes. Like in the previous case, we had to install the drivers; but once again, nothing happened.

I went to ask another of my co-workers, and he couldn't come up with a reason why MS SQL would act so weirdly.  I then went to talk to a member of the Database team. She asked me if she could connect remotely, to which I replied I would set that up for her. And since I was going back, I picked up a floppy disk that had come with the DB backup. Maybe there was some information in there that I could use.

I put the floppy in the computer, clicked on "A:" and...nothing. But I did hear the 'click' that the floppy drive does! But no light! How can it be? I clicked on "A:" again. And again, I heard the click.

And this time I did see the light. It was on the CPU to my left. Somebody had connected Monitor #1 to CPU #2 and Monitor #2 to CPU #1!!! I just couldn't believe it. Not only I felt stupid for not having checked more thoroughly, I also had a few special words for whoever had done such a thing...

Me mostró y me dispuse a hacer mi trabajo.
